'Da DAVIS has received a letter from Mr.
Sellers, a scientific gentleman in charge of
some of the Salines of Illingis, who has disco
vered. various articles sunken in the earth,
which were used at Boma lqng past period by
people unknown in making salt from the same
springs which aro now recently brought into
use'. The letter contains description of utensils
and instrument found, particularly fragments
of the largest ancient earthen jars ever disco
vered in our country. It also gives a descrip
tion of the process which must have,been pur
sued by the unknown manufacturers in procu
ring salt from the waters. l Such discoverlbs,
with the intelligent and interesting conclusion
to which the writer was led; by the facts, add
new inducements to the labors of investigators.
, ram Aceinanr.—Last !Wednesday, Deo.
28th, Mr. Thomas Taylor of Brady township,
met with an accident which suddenly terminated
his existence. Re was engaged, with two other
men, filling a shingle tree on land of Mr. J.
M. 'Armagost, about two miles east of Lnthers-
Dui& 'The tree, in falling, lodged en another,
which they proceeded to out down also, when a
limb, which was knocked off one of the trees, fell
and struck Mr. Taylor on the book part of his
head and across the shoulders, crushing his head
and muting instant death. He was a good,
peaceful citizen, aged about 36 years, and leaves
a wife and six or seven children to mourn his

Scams Accinurr.—On Thursday, Deo. 22d,
while Mr. Thomas Ray, a ettizen of Beeearia
township in this county, was coming down (be
Brush mountain in Blair county with a load of
corn, the front end-board of the sled-box, on
which he was seated, came out and caused him
to fall down - In leant of the sled, ---- whicti ran on
him, and therough-look catehing him, he was
held in that position until a neighbor of his, who
was' a short distance ahead, came to his aid and
extricated him from his perilous situation. Ile
wasdnjured much in the region of rho abdomen
and thighs, and will probably hot recover for
long time, ever.

de Paris, gives (be following twins account,
for the exactitude of which he frilly vouch—"A
person named Roger Largois has just died at
Paris at the age of 100 precisely, day for day,
even hour for hour. It was 1 'o'clock in the af
ternoon of the 10th Decenaber,.l7st,t, that ha was
bore, and at 1 o'clock in the afternoon of the
10th of December, 1859, that he died. He was
a very remarkable personage, having excelled se
painter, engraver, poet and musician; and yet be
was totally unknown to the public, because he
would never Consent to exhibit or publish any of
his productions."
Barris Nor Han A Nave Tirst.—A man, by
the name of Levi Ostrander, of Mechanicsville,
Saratoga county, New York, was sentenced to
be hung at Louisville, Kentucky, on the 10th
instant. Ostrander was tried; and convicted of
manslaughter; his counsel appealed and obtained
a neWtrial, and on this be was convicted of mur
der. An appeal, on the ground that he could
not be convicted of murder, when on a former
trial he was convicted of a lesser offence, has
been overrulel. We think this case is without
a parailediu the history of criminal trials.
Tuegday of this week, an!lndian hunter en
countered a huge bear near Beef River Station,
and the afftay proved fatal to both. The In
dian shot the bear, wounding., him severely, and
then rushed up, expecting to dispatch him with
his tomahawk. Mr. Brain "Ideked horns" with
Mr. Indian, and u struggle for life ensued. The
conflict must have been a terrible one, us the

Mese Boanr.—The dwelling house of Martin
Kettrney,Esq., of Piney township, was burned to
the ground on Wednesday night, Dee. 28th. The
fire caught in the roof, and is a few moments the
whole was in ashen. Mr. Kearney succeeded in
saving moat of the bedding and name provisions,
with the mail and Post-office books, which were
kept in the building, but nothing else of any val.
