Tha Republicans, constituting as they do a de
- oftled:Piireplity,:arerfairly entitled to the Speak
, „eh and no doubt in the end be suocessful
in electing the presiding officer. There are
seismal Melbas by which this can be no
nomplistuid :
1.• By securing a coaleseence of the South
Americans.
2. Dy funning n Ulan with the Anti-Lecomp
ton'Deatoorate.
3. Bye coalition of the whole Opposition; and
4. By persistently and unitedly voting until
the plurality rule it adopted.
The iast modo should be the dernier resort,
sad it-is the one our democratic opponents
would, most undoubtedly adopt, failing In all
%other eXpediante 'to eecnre the Speaker from the
ranks of their party. The Republicans named
in connection with the office aro several reliable
men. The most prominent namea are those
Messrs. Grow, of Pennsylvania, Sherman and
Corwin of Ohio. The first two, at least, have
fully commended themselves to the confidence
the party by their devotion to Republican
,:prinCiides, and the entire consecration of
4eirtime and talents to the promotion of the
on the floor of Congress. Gov. Pen
nington; of New Jersey, -has been named as a
compromise candidate. As an Old Line Whig,
'GOT. P. held a high rank in the country, and it ,
as sound in the Republican canoe, would be on
exeeptionable. Mrr draw is a man of nerve,
whose Republican antecedents are all right. He
has been the teatime champion of the great
principles of our party, winning laurels aa a
debater and commanding the confidence of his
associates from his reliability in the darkest
hour of the Kansas tronbles.
No doubt, ho waver, the nominee of the Re
plbliesti caucus, whoever ho may be, will coo/-
bike in hie character all the elements of strength
and peculiar fitness, which will be indispensable
in the offiizer to preside in the XXXVI Congress.
He / must be a man of backbone, unfailing
nerie and eelf-reliance, who can well endure the
fire of Southern holopurs and firmly and un
dauntedly uphold tho freedom of debate and
keep in check the hectoring spirite, who would
„ride rough shod over Northern members.
rl We trust we shall see a spirit of conciliation
eminently characterizing our Republican friends .
There are several members, each as Etheridge,
of Tenn., Gilmer, of North Carolina, Davis and
Harris, of Maryland, who eschew sectionalism
and occupy a position which enables them, if
not to fully act, at least to deal fairly with
the Republicans. These men should be concili
ated gofer as conciliation can go without a com
promise of vital principles. Important as is the
election of a Speaker to the Republican party
yip wish to ace him elected fairly, honorably,-
and without the compromise of a .single princi
ple. This we can accomplish in the end and we
devoutly - tope it may be achieved in the first
. •day's cession. •
.Tot Reins or Toutoa.—To-day John Brown
suffers upon the scaffold. No portion of this
country ever before presented just such a spec
tacle as does Virginia to-day. The like has,
perhaps, before been seen in the world. Were
John Brown led forth to suffer by the guillotiut,
were the shears that-spilled so 'much blood in
France only there to open their bloody jaws to
the old man'e neck, we could imagine the scene
to bo in the France of Robbeepierre tuid Denton.
What but the guillotine Is wanting to complete
the picture? There is'the came terrible note of
preparation, the ease dread like a pall upon the
hearts of men, the came array of military force,
the same dead silence of the press, save upon
the side of power. When the bloody mounte
banks of the French Revolution brought out
some champion of the people for the ',laughter,
the drums were wont to beat, the soldiery to
cheer and the vim of the furious crowd to Web
forth so that no ono should hear a word that
might be spoken by the august victim of the
hour. Gov. Wise is even more cautious. In the
midst of the spacious field, rising like an amphi
theatre, where all may assemble to see the ead
and pitiful eight, the gallows will stand apart
and a row of bristling bayonets and a park of
artillery mill protect the space all around, eo
that no word which may be uttered can reach a
human car.
There was, however, one custom among the
Terrorists of France, which we presume may
notbe followed... When a man of superior pluck
was to dio, the 'Ticino Doctor" was brought to
the cell on the night previous and the doomed
lit hLe knees ehould tremble under him, and thus
lean was submitted to the proem of bleeding un
he who was prepared calmly, in spirit; to meet a
score of deaths, presented a pitiful spectacle of
weakness and physical dilapidation which the
dopers of the passing tyrant were wont to at
t.
tribute to cowardice. In-no other way, we pre-
Mine, will the Ogee of faltering be wrung from
John Brown, if we may judge of the pluck that
is in the man from what we have alredy octet
of him.
. .
Will posterity believe that in the middle of the
19th oentstry any State of this Courederacy wits
so weak as to exhibit at the execution of one old
man a parade of terror and of cruelly which re
produces the Paris of Denton and Mani? Will
they believe that any party could ever have lived
in this repnbliO to advocate the extension of a
eyetem of bondage which carries with It a nece--
City or a s , apposed necessity for snob a display as
Charlestown exhibit/ to-day?
WE have received a com a munication from our

admirably written, we think it would not he well

boyish sports, has only within a few years given
place to the business improvemente which have
changed the aspect of that portion of the city.
His father was a native of Scotland, and his
mother was an Englishwoman. Mr. Irviog'e
early education was limited to the advantages
thew afforded by the ordinary schools of New
York; and he had scarcely attained the age of
sixteen when he commenced the study of law.
His first literary productions were a aeries of
letters on the drama, the social cuatome of New
York, and various topics of current gossip, pub
lished under the signature of Oliver Oldstyle, In
1802, in the Morning Chronicle, a newspaper
edited by his brother, Peter Irving. These ee
rier', although bearing the damp of youth and
Inexperience, were favorably received by the
public, attracted general notice, and were widely
copied by other journale. An edition of them
was issued by some shrewd publisher in 1824,
although without the authors consent.
After pursuing hie legal studies for a few
zgars, Mr. Irving'(' health had become so far
impaired, as to suggest tho amenity of seeking
recreation and a change of climate by visiting
Europe. He accordingly sailed for Bordeaux
' in 1804, traveled through the south of France
to Nine, visited Genoa, Sicily, Naples and Rome,
at which last named city, he made the acquaint
ance of Washington Alston, who-warmly recom
mended him to devote his life to the pursuit of
art. Ito 'extended his travels to Switzerland
and Holland, and after an absence of two years
returned to hie native country in 1806,nomplete
ly restored to health
He now rearmed the study of law, and was
admitted to the bar in the autumn of the same
year, but never engaged in the practice of the
profession. At the commencement of the fol
lowing year, the first number of the "Salmag
undi" made its appearance—a semi-monthly
periodical, to which ho was the principal con
tributor, in connection with his brother, Mr.
William Irving, and the since . distiognished au
thor, Mr. James K. Paulding. The lively humor
and brilliant satire of this work made it a favor
ite with the public, although it was discontinued
after the twentieth number. In December, 1809,
he gave to the world a still more characteristic
specimen of his peculiar genius, in •' Knicker
bocker's History of Now York," which has since
maintained the position, which it grained at once,
as a master-piece of jubilant irony, audacious
extravagance, Lind picturesque delineation.
In 1810, Mr. Irving was admitted 1113.0 partner
in the extensive commercial house of two of his
brothers which was conducted by-them in New
York and Liverpool, with the understanding that
he should not neglect his literary pursuits for the
details of business. During the war with Great
Britain, in 1813-14, ho published a series of na—
vel biographies, in the ..Arutlectio Magazine,"
and in toe autumn of the latter year he was ap
pointed aide-do-camp anti military secretary of
the governor of Norfolk, with the rank of colonel.
On the close of the war, Mr. Irving again em
barked for Europe in the spring of 1811, with
the intention of devoting some time to, trav
el, but the financial difficulties which followed
the return of peace, caused the bankruptcy of
the house, in whiott his brothers had given him
an interest, and he was thus led to look to the
labors of his pen as the menus of cubsistence.
The first fruits of this change in his fortunes
was the •'Sketch-Bsok," (1819), the euccessiee
numbers of which were transmitted from Lon
don. where they were composed, for publication
in New York. The success, which ins mediately
attended this work both in America and England,
was, in the highest degree, cheering to the au
thor.
After a residence of five years in England, Mr.
Irving removed to Paris in 1820, where he re
mained about a year, when . he returned to En
gland and published "Bracebridge Hall" in the
Spring of 1822. He subsequently took op his
abode at Paris, Bordeaux, and Madrid, where
he remained two years, publishing, between
1824 and 1882, the ••Tales of a Traveler," ••Tbc
Ltfu and Voyages of Cotumbus," ••Chronicle of
the Conquest of Granada," "Voyage of :the
Companions of Columbus," and "The Alham
bra." In July, 1821, he was appointed Secre
tary of Legation to the American embassy at
London, which office be held.untxl the return of
Mr. McLane in 1831; when, after remain
ing a few month. as charge, be resigned on the
arrival of Mr. Van Buren. While in England,
Mr. Irving received the well-deserved compli
ment of ono of the fiftyguinea gold medals,
provided by George IV for eminence iu nistor
cal composition—the other being awarded to
Mr. Hallam.
In May, 1832, after an absence of seventeen
years, Mr. Irnag returned to New-York, where
be was welcomed with the warmest demonstra
tions of public honer, and pereonal regard. The
greetings, which here awaited hie arrival, were
each as are rarely accorded to the most eminent
national benefactors, and perhaps, never before
to one whose highest claim on the gratitude of
his countrymen wan the productions of his mag
ic pen. Soon after his return to the United
States, he made an extensive tour in the Went,
of which he has left en animated record io the
"Tour on the Prairies," published in 1835.
This was followed In the same year by "Abbots
ford and Newstead Abbey" . and "Legends of
the Conquest of Spain." In 1836 he published
"Astoria," and in 1837, the "Adventures of
Capt. Bonneville in the Rocky Mountains and
the Far Weld." Is 1539 and '4O: he contributed
arteries of graphic papers to the "Knickerbocker
Magazine," a portion of which with other fu
gitive pieces ere afterward published in a vol
ume entitled "Wolters's Roost."
Is Feb., 1842, Mr. Irving erne again summon
ed to diplomatic services, having received the
appointment of Minister to Spain. He remained
In this captivity at Madrid until MI6, when hit
returned home, and from that time resided at the
celebrated rural retreat at Sunnyside, on the
hanks of the Hudson. After his return, he pub
lished the "Life of Goldsmith," "Mahomet and
hie Succeseors," and completed his "Life of
Washington," the great work which was at once
the employment and the solace of his declining
years, end which will prove a holing monument
to the subject and the author.

Upon the evening of his decease Mr. Irving had
pawed the hours in lively oonverastlon with his
three nieces and his nephews*, Mr. Pierre Irving
and Mr. Ebenezer Irving, upon which occasion

him, but only to witness his lifeless form, though
not until a physician had been called and re

that life was extinct. Mr. Irving has for years
been a communicant of Christ Church, Tarry
town, and during a period of four or five years
be has acted as warden in the same church. As
a resident of the place which now beers his
name, he has ever been universally regarded as
a most amiable and sociable neighbor, and as
such his buddeu demise has cast a gloom over
the entire community. The funeral will take
