A. R Ch'n. City Ex. Com - - Tue'Cuatritass Roan.—A recent rough and aviary ride over the turnpike from, here to Wash ' legion led as do repeat the wish, often uttered before, that the Chartiers Valley Railroad were finished: It would be but an hour's ride by rail; while by the present means of locomotion It takes abouthalf a dozen. No one ever passes over thh Presqnt route without devontly i praying for-the speedy oompletion of the railroad. And there4artly beside the turnpike, and Within eight of it during most of the way, is the graded bed of the Chartiere Valley Railroad, ' nearlyready• for the rails. A little more work on the bridges . , and a few days' labor here and there Would prepare the bed for the superstruc ture. All that is wanted le iron enough to lay 26 mike of rail, and stock tho road with care and locomotives. This is not much; and yet the road has keen in that condition for years—a reproach as well ae a source of continual regret. Can not-this little road be finished' It passes through a rich and thickly nettled country; completion would at once dcvelope resources now hidden; ana the lapel traffic along the line would soon be ruißcient ,to maintain it. If we know ottreelves, and we think we do, we are not to be tempted into drawing the flattering pieturee of prospective returns which characterized the Woes of the railroad fever during which this little road was begun and which abated before it was finished; but we may, In all eober earnest ness, refer to the business which this road would develop° and build Op as affording a good reason for believing that it would pay. It would cer tainly pay upon the comparatively little it would take to finish and stock L ; and "we have no doubt the present etockholders would cheerfully part with their interest in it, if they could there by promote its completion. At Washington the road would connect with the Hempfield road to Wheolieg, which connects, in turn, with the Ohio Central road, leading, with its various connections, to all parts of Ohio and the West. It would thus become not only a good local road, but part of a good and 'short through route, and would naturally come in for a fair share of the through trams. . We- learned, while in Washington, that the Westiin Transportation Company had an en gineering force on the route, and that there wee a prospect of that- company undertaking the completion of the road. We hope this may prove true, The trade of iVashington county fe naturally with Pittsburgh. The business rela tions between the two counties are of the most blatante kind; and there aro very few of our • irnsitiess men who would not rejoice with as in the prospect of so desirable a result. Tun Dna OLLTION THILMAT.—The locofocos hare, from the very beginning, made cse of this threat as their chief weapon in times of sup posed danger to the tiscendaccy of their party. It was used as far book as 1828, anti to very much the name purpose as now. We copy from a newspaper published In Baltimore, called_the diary Lander, dated Au - gust 2d, 1828, the follow- Lag "A few days since; we stated on the authority of the Richmond Whig, that Mr. Andrew Rio yensop,,-, Speaker of toe House of Representa tives,.had aleit weeks asserted 'Owe if dfr. Adams would be re-elected, the .Union c ould be dissolved.' Ou the 0011130 authority. we staled that a Judge of the General Court of Virginia had made the declaration at Norfolk that Mr. Adams Wad not put out by . the voice of the people, they (the Jackson men) mould be wilting to put him out by force.' Both these statements are corroborated by re sponsible 1 1 / l aleb, who certify to their truth." The tame threat was made under Gen. Jack- eon's administration by John C. Calhoun and itin South Carolina squad of nullifiers; but that in domitable veteran was not to be scared by ouch stuff, and hie avowed determination to beep, as traitors, every one of the crowd who attempted to carry the thrust into execution, brought them speedily to their senses. If a Republican Pres ident is chosen in 1960, and soy effort is made to pat the rebellious spirit in motion,.the e'er:" ohm of the firmness which characterized Jackson In a like extremity will produce a similar result. TGIC BOARD or TaADE.—Ten attendance during the peat week at the Board of Trade has been quite encouraging, and we hope . to one it kept up, steadily. It will require patience and per severance to make the interest of these meetings permanent. It cannot be done iu a day ; and 'those 1r he fail them find them - of much interest, At first, should not, for that rump, stay away from them. By the ezeroiee of a hopeful spirit and constant attendance on the part of these - ' who hare the ability to build up auoh an insti tution, it may in a abort time be made as attest:- , tire se the Exchanges aro in other cities. Another important feature of the book lea large collection of chants and anthems, accommodated to the church sea eons and to all the necessities likely to min ; where it is intended to eerie. These form an appropriate appendii. I- 111 . 07,0. i1.'1,13341L50N We are secured that no pains have been spared to produce a book adapted to the need, and in all respecte worthy of the favorable regard of the churches. It is the Product of the combined ef forts of musiclaue, ministere and laymen of the church. ,A special' committee of the Lutheran Board of Publication examiued the book in maie nucript and made ati official and highly favorable report upon it. ' We cannot of 001:019 able, in a passing notice of this kind, to say much ' in reference to the motto selected and arranged for this book. Wo oan say, however, that in turning over its pages we discover those giand hymns, which form the coot and foundation of all our more modern church mimic, carefully reprinted as they came from the baud of the '•otd maeters." Weak and conceited men have even dared to palter with "Old Handled" in come of oar recent church books, while tho "Old Hundred" has always seemed to no to have been the glorious outburst of centuries of soul music, pent up and mother ed under ages of soulless mummery.. It is like the yearnings of a heart, haunted and burdened with heavenly melody; a heart whose springs were at length touched and thrilled into irre pressible expression by the informing presence of the Divine Spirit. Such strains are of heaven, and are sacred. The hymns are, as wo think, well selected. Cersaiuly, all the most beautiful ones we have met with in other books of the kind find a place in this volume, which contains, besides the words to chants and anthems, 969 hymns. In conclu ding our desultory remarks on a book which do serves a better notice, we may adopt the words of the preface, that, 'though the book may em brace defects, which are always more easily de tected than remedied, yet on the whole It is a work which claims to be in advance of any col lection of hymns or music yet offered to Lutheran Churches in this country." [For the Daily Pittsburgh Gazette.,] MESSRS. Entrons :—Permit me, as the friend of the Temperance Reform, to suggest the propriety of select public readings from our standard temperance documents and speeches. Some of the most brilliant specimens of Americas literature, both in proeo and poetry, might be reproduced in this way, not only In the several wards of Pittsburgh and Allegheny, but in every town and village throughout the country. The published addresses of Bithup M'llwaine, Dr. Marsh, Dr. Sowell and others might be named, the reading of which could not fell to prodube a power ful effect In: molding public sentiment on this ques tion. It is With pleasure we learn that Prof. M. F. eaten is preparing himself for this good work. BD readiness m apprehending the rentiments of an an ther, as well as his correct and natural Oleander., must render him • a valuable coadjutor in this great reform. The round and unanswerable arguments of the advocates of temperance in former days are needed just now. The pubile mind must he im pressed by facto, 4gnroa and arguments, before any intelligent and permanent legal action can be taken. PROlnamom.
