Mona Ildixxs.—The Governor of Ps.nneyl - in, It will-be seen, declares psi the report as his offeriof 10,000 men to guard the frau. tie between Pennsylvania and Virginia is a ho • That fact was tolerably apparent, at firs ; but !hero are so many silly things done, now, and en many silly people, that it is, per haps, well to-sontradiot the ridiculous story. Thin, one. after another of the reported die .patchee from the north to Gov. 'Wise, on , irhich be predicated hi/ late extraordinary display of military force, Proves - to be bogus, until all are Included in that category. The Richmond Enquirer, however; tries to ~~ , ~q .~ bolster op the Gpvernor by pubashing sundry letters received tibia the north, all of which in linicat!a fear that a rescue of Brown would be attempted. These letters, the 'Enquirer says, 'are all signed by responsible names; but it takes gsbd care to withhold tho names, thus de. pricing them of all possible authority. If there have been any movements of the north looking to the rescue of Brown, the men who have arm. mcnalcated the fact to Gov. Wise need not be ashamed to see their names in print ; and the very fact that the names are withheld, proves ' that the letters are either hoaxes, forgeries or were manufactured in Richmond to suit the par- pose. We incline to the latter belief : but it is not atoll improbable that - wags in various pane , of the country, knowing the credulity and ea oitability of Virginia, have resorted to this means of provokietg the ludicrous displays that v have followed, in order to have a hearty laugh Over them. If that is the case, the whole coun try Its bad the opportunity of joining in the laugh. It is certain that no people ever made themselves so ridiculOns n 3 the Virginians have in this instance.' - If Gov. Wise has really received the forged dispatehes which he alleges to have received, purporling to be from 11. 8. - Elaroholo and Gov ernors, .a sense of lair dealing towards them ' should prompt him to ferret out and expose those Who have so itaposed upon him; and if he does not do this, the officials whom names have been need owe it to themselves to trace the whole affair out. They can easily ascertain whether Such dispatches were sent, if not who sent them; and if It should turn out that no such dis patches ever passed over the line, which is very probable, let the fact be made known, that the Governor of Virginia and hie courageous coal. karma may stand forth in their true light. TOLE LAST SCARE: AT CHARLESTORS.=TCIO Re counts of thelast great scare at Charlestown, the result of the unanswered challeoge of a sentry to a oow, ptokii' broad grin upon every face on Thanksgiving day. One of our friends observed to no on that morning that be had something, now, to he especially thankful for—that he was not, to wit, a citizen of Virginia. If Frank Leslie's picture-taker had not been driven from Charlestown by the suspicious pop ulace of that seedy, card-playing, whisky-drink ing ,town, wo.might rationally look for a life size engraving of that cow which scared the sen tinel out of his wits. Also of the sentinel in the act of challenging the cow. Whether it would be possible to give what the cow did not say, and yet meet have felt, under the extraordinary cir cumstances, we cannot tell; we leave that to the artist; bat It certainly would not be difficult to depict the terrified look of the sentry as he blazed . away at the bovine enemy, and then fled to alarm the town. This fellow, it is evident, was a very good coward, but a very poor cowherd. Bat what of the people - of Charlestown them nelveal- How prompt they were to extinguish the light,, close the shutters, and make ready for the general doom ! The cackling of geese once saved Rome from destruction ; and it is a pity that there had not been some of the cack ling gesso on guard at Charlestown instead of the kind that were on guard. You couldn't scare a genuine goose with a cow; and hence it would bardlitelair to the tribe of geese to class thin poltripieentyi With them. The oow was chal lenged and did not answer; and where there is no maser, it is plain,k there could be no goose. The dentry, therefore, will have to be otherwise classified. Ile said that he had not lung since met, in the city of St. Louis, a man of great scientific attainments, who fur forty years had been engaged in Egypt in decyphering the hicroulphice of the ancients. Thie gentlemen had stated to him that he had lately unravelled the inscriptions upon the coffin of a mummy, now in the London Museum, and that by the aid of previous observations, he had discovered the key to all the astronomical knowledge of the Egyptians. The . zodiac, with the exact position of the, planets, was delineated on the coffin, and the date to which they pointed was the autumnal equinox in the year 1722 befure Christ, or nearly thirty-six hundred years ago. Professor Mitchell employed his assistants to ascertain the eiziet position of the heavenly bodies belonging to our solar system on thn. equinox of that year, (1722 B. C.,) and 60111 him a correct diagram of them, without having communicated his object in doing en. In com pliance With this the calculations were made, and to his astonishment, on comparing the re -salt with the etatements of his scientific friends already referred to, it was (baud that, on the 7th of October, 1722 B. C., the moon wad plan ets had occupied the exact position in the hea vens marked upon the coffin in the London Museum. From the manner in which parties node stand it has become a well established maxim, founded on the experience of 1056, that the party that secures Pennsylvania, secures the Union. This being the case, sound pol icy would dictate to the Republican party to select a candidate who can gain the Old Keystone. Now, being a Pennsylvanian, and knowing from some experiencii how the Republican pulse beats in My native State, I have no hesitation to declare that no man in the Republican tanks can early Perintijavania as easily as Simon Cameron. Reran combine all the elements, conflicting as they are, of the opposition, and carry the State by at least 20,000 majority, and thereby errors a complete national triumph. Laying aside all other considerations, this one, in connection with his honesty and capability, should induce all lovers of their country to rally around Mr. Cameron and demand his nomination for tho Prosidericy with a firm and pnaninsosig voice. Abraham Lincoln is oar choice for the Vice Pres idency. The west desires his nomination, and it is but proper that in this particular and as this time, she should be gratified. Mr. Lincoln is certainly the western favorite, and man would be So likely to /scare the vote of Illinois, Indiums and the other western and northwestern States as ho. Tne Ernoresx CONGREOS.—A despatch from Paris makes the important announcement that the French and English Cabinets have agreed on the bases of an European Congress, and that the agreement only awaits the formal ratifica tion of the English Government. We have yet to learn the foundation upon which this intelli gence rests, but it appears 'to tally with general expectation in Paris, and with statements pub lished in journals which have the reputation of receiving occasional communications .from the subalterns of the French Foreign office. If vie may believe the Nord, though France" will be bound by the stipulations of Villafranca, Eng land and the other Powers will enter the Congress without any previous engagements, and will, consequently, possess entire liberty cf action on the Italian question. Some correspondents af firm that England has required guarantees against the preponderance of Austria in an Ital. ianiConfederation: but their assertion, probably, rests on no good fbandation. The Paris correspondent of the Nord is as sured that Lord Cowley hoe communicated to Count Milewski a despatch from Lord John - Russell, distinctly stating the reservations and conditions under which the English Cabinet will consent to go into Congress. The question, he says, has been under consideration at the two last Cabinet Councils in London. Lord John Russell insists above all that entire liberty of action in the Congress should be accorded to England. She will in no way be bound by the stipulations of the treaty-of Zurich, and since this treaty reserves the rights of the Italian Princes, the Cabinet of London insists that the rights of the Italian people should aloe be re served. Finally, Lord John Russell requires from ,Austria a formal guarantee against any preponderance in the future Italian Confedera tion„—dlonehester Guardian, Nor. 5.
