Did treacherous spiea bang upon the skirts of hie bandy What messenger ' 'could outride the' knight of the green plume! And so was it elan in the ware for Holy Land. Wherevei the bitiwa fell thickest, and ponderous mace or fearful battle axe was crushing the greatest number of skulls, there you found the braveat knights of chivalry to protect the help less or crush the strong. Richard could try titles of strength and skill with Saleft. Fran de Boeuf could knock the brains from a bullock , with a blow of his fist, or meet hosts of manly enemies on the bloody field, but he never, atmord ltig to history, pounced upon au enemy when that enemy •was down. Fair play wits a jewel among the ironsided champions of chivalry. 801014 r. times, like Don Qaixolto, they'. risked their pre cious pates by Courting danger for its own 'take. Sometitaes 'they eyes rode sion windmills, or made deiperate battle ripen the blind agencies of nature. Chivalry in all these and many other valorous forme, we find depleted on the rage of history or romance. Bat our own day, rich in new developments and new phases of character present. us chival ry in now aspects—chivalry ferocious, chivalry cowardly, chivalry frightened. However r men may misbehave, however much we may condemn their notions or even rejoice at their overthrow when they venture upon [intim. fal deeds, they are yet men, and,as such, when they are overcome, it has accorded with all our views of manliness as It has with all the dictates of humanity that, by the victor they receive the treatment of men. In fact that was the view of ancient chivalry, as we have intimated above. Among the score of madmen at Harper'e Ferry there was one named Thompson; who he was, where he . was born, or when he became mad, nobody icriows. This, however, we do. know, and we have learned it from the lips of a man named Bunter, who was examined in the recent trials, viz : ;r , that after Thompson was captured, put in chains, desperately wounded and convey ed to a room in the prison, this Mr. Monter went in ittiere ho isy, and with a hundred mini cowards at hist:melt, and in epite of the weeping and beseechings of a tender woman who plead In the named — humanity for the prisoner's life, dragged him forth and, helpless as he was, butchered him in cold blood. This le chivalry ferocious. Of the cowardly kind of chivalry, the above might also serve, perhaps, as an example, but the following, which we take from the examiv lion on the trial of Brown, will do better Sennott—"You say that when B+' down you stuck him in the saber ?" - • 4, • • Liepjt, Oreen—" • Lisa _e, eir." kt was Minnie was down areen—'!Yes, Mr; he was down." r.flennott—"Row many times, LieuL Green, did you strike Broirn in'The face with your saber after he was down?" Lieut. Green--,"fily, sir, he was defending himself with, his gun. Mr. Hunter—"l hope the counsel for the de fense will not press such questions as these." Metlesinotk_—"Very well, sir." Al a' specimen of chivalry terrified we need only direct the attention of our readers to the telegraphic diepaMhes from the land of Presi dents and other officials, for a day or two past. The shouts of chivalry in terror pen itrated the bed room of the aged aria trembling executive cif the Union, and special trains are dispatched With m,nie rifles, shells and amhni- Lion, against an enemy that no one has seen, and no one even heard of! Chivalry in Jerre'. is . fanny. A month will not have elapsed before we shall hear from the representatives of these "gallant" fellows — on the floors of Congress, threats dire and dieadfill that unless the right to extend an institution that is the cause of all this unmanly fear, be granted by Congress, all these valiant men that are now ri ding up and down, will come on and "dissolve the union of these Btatia!'s And that will be chivilry ander yet another as. peel. FLIVAVICS lICILAING Or d BALLOOK TN SIDNEY.—From a recent Australian paper we take following seamint of the destruction by fire ofl the Austra lian Balloon, in Sidney, N. S. W. j Pursuant to announcement, the Australian Balloon was inflated in the vacant ground attach ed to Mr. Pollack's premises, 'between Pitt and George streeta, and in duo time ascended from this spot. The occupants of the car were Mr. Green, ono of the proprietors of the balloon and Alfred Wardell, .a eon of Mr. Wardell, of Vaux hall Gardens, London. Owing to the nature of - the wiod, tho turnouts were compelled to descend in the yard of the Woolpack Inn, at the Haymar ket. One of thim (Mr. Wendell) having got out, the other attempted to rise again so as to do-.' .scend in a small paddock somewhat further on; but tbopresstrre of the crowd., which by this time had poured into the yard, prevented him from so doing. There was no resource, there fore, but to empty the balloon of its gas where it then was. Oat the subtle vapor eecaPed with great rapidity from a large rent in therbody of the balloon, and impregnated the whole of the surrounding atmosphere. Still all might have passed off well, but that some reckless fool took this opportunity to light a Weiler, and to cast the still burning.match away. For a description of what followed, we take the words of an eye witness: "The effect - of this was horrible in theextreme. Streams of gas which had just issued from the balloon into the air, ignited instantly, and vivid lines and sheets of Same traversed the.yard in all directions, like flying fiery serpents. During the time that this awful eight was visible, the terror and confusion that prevailed gas such as baffle desoription. it must be borne in mind that in. spite of reiterated and untiring efforts of the police to clear the yard, it had been hard ly possible for them to do more than to keep tolerable order in the excited throng; especially ao multitudes were still endeavoring to get in, whilst those in the yard tried with desperate efforts to get out again into the Haymarket. 'When the-fire appeared, and several in the yard - and on the sheds were singed and burnt, there was a frantic rush to the gateway, already blocked op, and numbers breaking through the woodwork escaped into Durantre alley on the one side, and over the stables into George street on the other. • - The fire at first did not touch tho balloon, which waskept, liy the exertions' of Mr. Brown and his inert, in the middle of the yard,at a great risk, and with a frontage and presence of mind which cannot be too highly praised. The, fire engine was promptly sent for and brought down by Mr. Brown's Orders, but, very happily, was not required, as the old buildings would dotibt less have burned - like paper. All this passed rapidly, perhaps in less time than it takes to tell it. The,firo darting about in the air caught the ear, and then, seeing any attempt to preserve the balloon utterly fruitless, and fraught with extreme danger to life and property, the balloon was purposely out, and the enormous body of gas yet remaining in it—several thousand cubic feet—ignited, and the balloon wee consumed in one mass of Ileste, which appeared for a moment, and then vanished. From the first sight of the explosion—by which, from the cool skill with which it was managed, no harm was done—the scene was in deed terrlbe. The screams of the women and children—several of whom were thrown down and trampled upon—the shout of the men, and the rush of the panic-stricken mob, were some thing spelling. By the untiring slid vigorous exertions of the police the rush was fiat-tinily stopped at the gateway. I the young woman was knocked down and passed over by several as they fled. Sho was rescued at last by ate police, carried out, and at length restored to conscious ness. She appeared, however to have had her face under some man's boot An infant of six . months old was picked up, having been thrown on one Fide,ln the portico in charge of it broke through the fence into Alakes buildings., Another very youne child Was picked op and rescued from imminent peril, and several persons of maturer years owe their safety, perhaps their lives, to the act i,ve courage and care of the police.
