HON. EDWARD BATaI.—WO observe that a
great : deal alines has beettlaid upon the reeeit
statement of Thin on the Shifty 'question put
forward by the St. Louis Evening News as those

b face:
.".115 the Evening News, several months ago,
presented the name of Mr. Bates as the favorite
of the St. Louis Oppositioniste for the Presiden
ey, it Is reasonably to be supposed that we had
- sufficiant knowledge of his opinions, on this and
other subjects, to Joktify the nomination of him.
If may be that we know enough of his views,
even now, to eatisfy the more importunate quo-
Heti in the matter. The following are what we
are sure will be found to be the views of Edward
BSI= on the Slavery Question."
' We gave an abstract of these views, at the
time, and need not repeat them : They are
given, it will be teen, not at his, but as what
the editor Is "Mae will be found to be" his.
We have thus had three deolarationd of natl

endoreenient of them. In the mean
time he he written sundry lettere, in all of
Which be deprecates the agitation of the Slavery
qaestion; and as these lettere show that he iD:
not unwilling to write, when directly appealed
to, we do not see why hie friends, who desire to
place, him on the Presidential course, slionld not
' be able to get his own direct avowal of the views
they attribute to him. That would put au end
to everything like doubt and unoerthinty.
We do not say these . things in a carping or
exacting:tea Mr. Bates Is an estimable pin-
Semen, whose capacity and integrity am ®-
questioned; but having been out of public life
for's considerable period, he has no record to'
indiento his position on the great and controlling
Issues of the day ; and it is not, therefore, too
much to ask that he should put all doubts at
, rest by becoming, himself, the expositor of his
Views. We do not qttestion the good faith of
those who have spoken for him but in these
time, men want outs:1;0ton avowals, in the first'

more authoritative than "be."

We are Very sanguine that in 'deference to the

and could I persuade myself that during these thirty

substantial claim to the flattering opinion you are
pleased to express, I should not fail to regard it as a
testimonial of infinitely more valise then any political

far richer heritage to leave to my . children than the
evanescent honors associated with the gubernatorial
