ThbVibqisia Inscerxctios. —The iosorroa
tioD Rt Harper’e Ferry, which startled the pob
lio yesterday morn'iDg, though sufficiently alarm
ion at the outset, proves to have been but a
short-lived affair. It was very speedily orusbed
by the formidable military foroes brought agaioet
it from Wasbiogtoo, Baltimore and Virginia; but,
unhappily, not without eerious loss of Ufe. The
parties actiroly engaged in it seem never to haTe
numbered over fifty or sixty, though ten limes
that cumber were before the otose of the affair
induced or cooroed into an apparent support of
the movement. So far as appears, it Was not the
result of any combination among the slaves
themselves, but was merely the explosion of a
clutuay plot concocted by a single man—John
Browu, of Kansas notoriety—with theaid of his
two eons sod ono or two other accomplices.
B.uwu, it will bo remembered, sufferedsevere
ly, ia the loss of bis property and in tbo death
of < ue of his sons, during the reign of ruffianism
in liausas. He was a fearless, faoalloal, ener
getic old mau to begin with, and the dooth of
his ijoq made him nearly frantic. Having sworn
vengeance'against the authors of bis calamities,
be made himself very oonspicuous, And cnivcr-’
sally dreaded by-tbo ruffians, during the subse
quent troubles in Kansas. .He was the leader of
the fight at Ossawatomie, where be is said to have
killed several of tbo invading borderers with hlk«
own band. After the troubles in Kansas bad
been quieted, Brown's uneasy spirit extended
its resentment to the Missourians, and especial
ly to the slaveholders, whom bo regarded as tbo
autherd of his wrongs. He entered into plots
for promoting the escape of their slavos, and
succeeded in getting twenty or thirty of them
awfcy, and In so alarming the slaveholders
throoghont'tbat section of the State, that they
forthwith commenced sending tbeirelavos to the
Southern States. He himself escaped unharmed,
and oame, it now appears, over a year ago to
the neighborhood of Harper's Ferry, and com
menced preparations to renew his operations In
Yirgloia. It was the very general belief of those
who knew him ia Kansas that Brown, after tbo
death of his son, became iosano upon this sub
ject; and bis proceedings in this affair certainly
gives countenance to the belief. A wilder and
more hopeless project than that in whioh ha em
b&rkrd cannot irell bo imagined
There ceems to bo no reason for believiug that
the plot had any extensive ramifications, or that
any further danger is to be apprehended. Vet
the affair oan scarcely fail to startle the public
mind in Virginia, and it may have the same ef
fect ad BroWo's movements hod in Missouri, and
increase, largely aod rapidly, tho transfer of
slaves from Virginia to the more southern States.
Every euch outbreak, from whatever causes it
may spring, quickens (ho public sense of the
insecurity of slave property on tho borders of
the elaveboldiog States, and so tend* to the re
moval southward of that frontier.
As a matter of course, the violent partisan,
-prints will seek to make tbo most of the affair
But wc sec uo reason for supposing that it bod
any connection whatever with auy political
movement, or that any party can with justice bs
held responsible fur it. It seems to have been
the work of a single man, smarting under a
sense of personal wrong and insanely seeking to
avenge them upon a whole community. He will
probably ply the penalty of bis rash insanity
with his Ufe, and leave, we trust, no inheritors
of his passion or his fate.—-V. Y. Tints'
History or Sibkbia. —The government •of.
Western Siberia has just published an offlolal doc
ument giving an account of tbit country as a
penal ootony, with a brief eketcb of its previous
history. From this it appears that m the six
teenth century Siberia was inhabited by hordes
of Tartar origin, and that in 16SO<ho celebrated
Jermak, batman of the Cossacks of the Don, in-'
raded it at the bead of 6,000 men, and succeed
ed, after several bloody battles, in taking Sibir,
the chief city cf tbo country. The hetman, find
ing that his resources were too limited to hold eq
extensive a country, ceded his conquest to Ivan
IV., aud Siberia has ever since formed part of
tho Russian empire The first strangers who
seuled then* were Cossacks, direlitzes and a few
gold diggers; but after a time it woe selected as
a place of oxlle for Rutalau Slate criminals. Pe
ter the Great sent his Swedish prisoners there,
and the Czarina Anne had the citizens of whole
villages transported there for refusing to work
for (heir lords. Oo tho abolition of pooishment
of death by Elizabeth in 1745, Siberia was regu
larly organized as a penal colony and transpor
tation thither was the puniahmen of all sort of
crime. The exiled nobles were feoerilly sent
to Berezove, to work In the oroi n gold mine!
there, and the names of the fifattfamllies in the
empire may be eceo on tombs Ut the cemetery
of that place. In 1623 an office was established
at Tobolsk, where the name of every exile and
his re*Ufoce were registered, la 1642 more
perfect rules were laid dowo, according to which
every trlbuual in the empire regularly forwards
to Tobolsk the names and offences of all persons
condemned to ejilo, and each oo his arrival was
eeal to the rt»idsßoe appointed for him The
Governor of Western Siberia sends a yeaily list
to St Petersburg of all the convicts that have
arrived. The fast published return comes down
to January I, lbou, aooording to which the per
sona who reached Siberia in 185-j were 7,630, of
whom 5,640 were men, 1,134 women, and 747
obildrcu. Tbo condition ofexilea In Siberia has
j much improved io the laht fow years. J/?*

of muscle—the one bailing from the fifth aveoue

groat body of the party Is supposed to fioctuato,
although for a fow years past it has taken Its cue
from the rowdy rather than the respectable
prompters. In fact, the rowdies have aoqulred
such an aioeodnacy, have conducted it Into sock
mazes of corruption, that the cleanlier sort have
found it necessary to the preservation of their
good repute to organize apart, and to undertake
to diotate terms to their associates—A’. F. Pott.

IUPAnTBH.— M I onoe heard Lord Brodlanda,
who was a fast man, ask dear old Mr. Justice
Mellow, of convivial memory, if there was any
truth in that old saying, “As eobor as a Judge?”
It waa a good hit, and we all laaghed heartily
at it. “It is perfectly true,” replied the judge,

acteristic, at least; for eobriety Is the attribute
of a judge as inebriety is of a nobleman. Thus
we say, “As sober as a judge,’' and “As drank

said that he has very convincing proofs that
Stout receivod over ono hundred 4otes from per
