NEW TORE Pouncs.—At the democratic, state
convention In New York, the Hardy, under tile
toed of Fernando Wood, got the control of the
organization by a movement which was said to
be &tittle 113 advance of the time. The Regency
party undertook to elect a new chairman and
begin dv novo. Their extra chairman we.. ntrnok
off the platform, whereupon they withdrew from
the Convention, and if was telegraphed over the
country that Wood had gone there with Heenan
and a company of New York millets to control
the convention by force. The bolters waited
until Wood's Convention had adjourned, when
they returned, organized, end When they retired
from the Hell encored the hey and retained pop
session. It now turns out that Heenan and the
most notorious of the fenny wore there at the
instance of the Regency party. Heenan has
published an affidavit attains that be was the
guest of Capt. R_ynders, and was admitted to the
convention on a ticket from Peter Cogger ; no
that Rynders, Cogger, and the Regency party
set up a howl about htillles controlling the con
vention only to cover up their own practices.
This wee their sole justification for bolting from
the convention, and, as thin Win • fraud, it is
probable that the proceedings of the Wood con
vention will be reesgnized at Charleston, and that
delegates elected by districts, as it recommended,
will present o better claim for admission than
the packed delegates of. the Regency convention.
That the government' of fho country should

of Howell Cobb, Scorelat7 of the Treaenry, de

respectfully commended to his colleague In the
Cabinet, Jeremiah S. Black, tho author of the late
reply to Stephen A. Douglas, in which be tries
to prove that Douglas has misrepresented the
Democratio party in taking precisely the position
of Howell Cobb:
"Those who bold that it, Territorial Legis

Therefore, practically, a majority of the people

Quotas —One of the prettiest of our Amerl

MUSICAL its note, are clear, thrilling and pleas
ant. With anything like decent treatment,
quails become semi-domestinted, though never
entirely so, and add not only in beauty, but In
real value to the farm; for they are not grain
eatare,.but immense Insect destroyers; and a
farmer ehonid no more permit a quell to be de
stroyed about hie premiere than he should bit
domestic poultry—la fact, not as much; for it
may he tic:saucy to kill of the surplus, to eat
or eell, to nave the expense of winter feeding.
But that is not the cue with quails; and even
should they Increase to ouch extent as to require
a little grain to suetain them through the deep
snows, they will pay back all the cost of keeping
in the Spring. A flock of quails la your ',gar
den or vine-patoh would be the moat effectual
remedy for wiped bugs that could be applied,
and then the remedy nets nothing.

CRALLINOC TO 11,L BLOYDIS BY A LOCAL EDIT.
on—A RACY Peopostmex.—The local editor of
the MlCean Citizen throws out the following
laughable challenge to M. Blondin:
A einglo telegraph wire shall be extended
from the American id the Canada shore, without
a single guy, directly over the cataract at Nia
gara Fella. The "Local" of this Taper, wear
ing a pair of cowhide boots and dressed in the
costume of a female dutch cook, will proceed to
the middle of the wire, with a common clay pip.
as a balancing pole, driving before him A hog
and cow, and carrying on his back a cooking
stove, a coop of chickens, a bed and bedding, a
keg of lager beer, a barber's chair, and various
cooking utensils. He will then unload himself
and immediately go to bed. After a snooze of
fifteen minutes he will rise, dress himself, lake
1 a glassof beer, milk the cow, kill the hog and
dress it, cook fresh pork for breakfast, after
which he will eat a wolf's meal. fie will then
throw one hundred and thirty summersaults,
sucking an egg while is the air at each evolution,
alighting the last time on the lip of the cow's
horn, and while in this position will take the
chicken coop, and after having taken the chick
ens oat, one at a time, and wrung their necks
consecutively, will balance the coop on the tip
end of his nose, bahthee the cooking 'tore on
his HOE hand thumb, batons. the bedstead on
his left thumb, at the same time finishing tho
beer and making a Dutch speech to the admiring
crowds on either shorts. After which—after the
manner of Levi North's celebrated one horse sot
—the "Local" will perform the one cow sot.
The foreman of this paper will then come out
on the wire, blindfolded and shackled, walking
on hands. Then there will be a representa
tion of Heenan and Morrissey's prize fight, in
which the "Local" and foreman will eichango
sundry knocks and kicks, and black eyes. The
last scene will be both parties standing on their
heads, awl will, in this predicament, play a rob
of twenty-one -games of old .ledge for the treat
of all hands. The whole to conclude with a rep
resentation of some of the loving emcees in Ro

A Man SHOT WILL! TAKEN() BIS 0111 f FIUIT_•
The Chatham (0. W.) Planet Darman the follow
log eingular and mournful incident:
"On Monday morning tut, Joseph Smith,
Esq., of the Lake Shore, Salefgh, mut accident
ally shot by his servant girl. From the evidence
adduced at the inquest and from the neighbor
hood around, it appeared that Mr. Smith, wha
Wu an excellent and extensive agriculturist and
horlieulturiet, had of late been greatly annoyed
by persons tresspansing upon his premises and
stealing therefrom any choice fruit they might
be able to find. Every means almost had been
trithi to put a etop to these depredation', but
without effect. Therefore, on Sunday last, after
talking the mailer over, and referring to his
grapes, of which he bad a fine lot just getting
ripe, Mr. S. addreeeed his servant girl while at
tea-lable,and said to her, "Now, Julia, I'm going
for the COW; you take the gun, which is loaded
with shot, and shoot the first person who comes
lathe grapes;" after uttering which be proceed
ed on to the pasture. Having brought up the
cows, instead of owning back the usual way,
from some unknown reason—probably to see
If thieves were about,--camo through the garden,
and directly between the rows of grapes behind
which the girl was stationed with loaded gun at
fall cock. According to the girls testimony, she
"did not see Mr. Smith, but saw some ono'. lege
when I shot." Healed out, "Oh, my God! what
have you done 7" end fell-down, the whole charge
taking 'Seat on the inside of the thigh, com
pletely severing the femoral artery. The poor,
frightened girl, scarcely knowing what alto did,
lied a hankerchief round the wounded limb, to
stop, if possible, the great flow of blood. But
all remedies were ineffectual, and the unfortu
nate man breathed his last before assistaucecould
be procured to remove him to the house."
ANOTOSII PLOT or DEFEAT TUE ADMISSION of
KANSAE.—The President mnd Secretary of the
Kansas Constitutional Convention, who, with the
Governor are oonetituted by the constitution an
election hoard to receive return. of the vote of
the people upon the constitution, have issued
their proclamation for an election in accordance
with the constitution and the election lawn of
the Territory on the first Tuesday of October, for
the !trpon of enabling the 'voters of the terri
tory to express their approval or disapproval of
the state constitution. Gov. fdedary was absent
from the Territory and' his name does not appear
in the proclamation; but hie Secretary, Hugh a.
bee Issued a different proclamation with
different instructions for holding the eleotioo. If
Gov Medial unctions this, it will ahoy clearly
that the 4,4mialalration is determined to defeat
the admiss ion of Kansas by any means possible.
The Plyandot constitution creates a toned of
oanvaseers, composed of the President and Se
cretary of the convention, and the Governor.
The convention had eupreme control over all
matters pertaining to the constitution. The
Governor has no authority over it exoept as a
Member of the board of canvassers, and it would
bti.ra high handed move, and of a piece with alt
the policy of the administration toward Kansas,
for the Governor to over-rlde the majority of tho
board and get up a conflicting election, to fur
nish an excuse to the democracy for opposing
the admission of this State, which It in already
a foregone oonolusion is not to be admitted into
the Union except against the whole power alba
administration.
