indefatigably iabOring to that end, himself, de

We have no fault to find with him for being in
tinstrione, nor far eleolioneerieg natively. That
is his privilege, and he' is not to blame for using
it. We elle the feet only to warn and warm op
the friends of our candidate. To Mr. Blaokmore_
no objection to urge; he is

every way competent for the office. But in all

the representative of its principles. 1n1856, we
remember, ho diligently canna/led the ward in
which he lived, took down the name and reel
donee of every democratic voter, stood at the
polls all day, and sent after every dilatory voter,
until he had every vote in. All this was done
to promote the election of Buchanan; and it
shows that although he is a very worthy gentle
man in all the relations of life, he is • bitter par
tisan, and thoroughly devoted to the interests of
his party. As such, be has no olaim upon a sin
gle Republioan vote, especially at this time, when
the Republicans of the county are anxious to tes
tify, by their votes, their condemnation of the
Buchanan administration. We accord to Mr.
Blaokmore all that can be claimed for him on the
score of pereonal merit; but we cannot forget,'
nor should the Republicans of the county forget,
that he le running as one of the representatives
of the Buchanan administration, and that every
vote given to him tea vote in favor of the party
which nominated him.
As to oar own candidate, Mr. Coulter, he is
in every way worthy of the support of every
Republican in the county. Re is not only wor
thy of It, but entitled to it. We have known him
for years, and we know Dim to be a deserving,
upright, honest man, of unbending firmness and
integrity of purpose, and' a gentleman in every
sense of that word. His capacity to discharge
the duties of the office is unquestioned and on
queetionable, and we know that he will, if elect
ed, make an officer of whom the people may welt
be proud. He enjoys, among hie neighbors and
acquaintances, a most exalted reputation. We can
think of no man who stands higher among those
who know him than HOOLMAII T. COULTER. He
deserves, as we believe be will receive, the vole
of the united Republican party throughout the
county; and we trust that every Republican
will feel it a duty as well as a pleasure to sup
port a candidate so worthy of their suffreges

the singularity of this heading, under the head
Expenditures, viz: "Interest on Railroad
Bands."!- As the Commissioners' Office, in 1888,
was under the entire control of the democratic
COmmissioners, M'Elhinny and Tomer, prior to
Oatober 18, of that year,_and aa all the items
under this head were paid prior to that date, the
astonished reader may well ask—"{ghat! have

Tan Post, when the democratic ticket was first
nominated, repudiated the ticket openly and ex
pectorated freely on the platform. On Tues
day, however, it came out as openly for the
ticket (and the platform, as a matter of course).

within a short space of time, just i r it has been
on the Buchanan question ; and it is to be pre
sumed that the candidates on that tioket will
now all decline, as Buchanan did. Whatever
may have been their • chanees, hitherto, (and

was so, on several occasions; but the democratic
pros, in this region, has vomited (alb column
after column to show that the act was not attrib
utable to Senator Toombe but was the act of the
Republicans of the Rome. What will they say I
now, when the Senator himself shofildere there

throats!

Editorn : A very pleasant:episode calm off
to-day at the Union School, in this borough, in the
presentation, on the part of the five different divis
ions of the School, to their late Superintendent,
David P. Lowery, Esq., of token. of . their kind re
gard far the wan and high appreciation of his worth
and efficiency, while sustaining the important and
responsible relation of Superintendent. The pre
sentations were different in their characters, all very
beautiful, valuable and appropriate, and were ro
atised with emotions of lively gratitude by the its
etilentEuperintandent, as affectionate tokens of the
esteem of his late charge. The school consists of
five divisions, and the mementoes were diversified
according to the several tutu of the youthful do
nors- The delicacy and excellent good torte which
characterized this spontaneous mark of affectionate
regard for an honored friend and tutor, were not
among the least pleasing Incidents of the occasion.
Mr. Lowery won upon the hearts of his multitudi
nous charge marvelously during the months be pro
dded over the school, and the failure of health which
induced his resignation, was matter-ef deep regret
thLs community, whose best Interests he bas most
assiduously endeavored to subserve. May his future
mends be attended with health end 'blessed with
Prosperity.
Wednesday Naming, Sept. 21.—This morning
opens up beautifully, with every indication of a far
day, which Is much to be desired, u, bad the rain
continued, the out-door exercises in the Cemetery
would have been exceedingly unpleasant, and many
would have been deprived of the pleasanter witness
ing the proceedings, which will be highly interesting
and exprastire, to take place to-day. The town la
full of stringent. Col. Curtin and W. A. C. Law
rence., Esq., of Llarristutrg, and B. 11. Irish, Esq., of
your city, arrived last evening, and are etoppiog
with Gen. Ball. The audience at the College assem
bled at 6 o'clock to listen to valedictory addrenes
and responses from the graduating members of the
Literary Societies, The performances were admira
ble—well written and happily delivered.. The young
gentlemen were rapturously applauded. At half
put rumen one of the most brilliant performances
came off that we have ever listened to in there Col
lage Ifells—the address to the two Societies by Pro
fessor Wilson, a synopsis of which I send you, the

Whoever the author of that reply was, he
wee • base calumniator. He knew it was • thane
of falsehoods from begtnniog to end. It was a
falsehood, and the writerknew it to be anoh,that
he (Judge Douglas) had ever advocated the doc
trine that private property could be confiscated
by any power on earth, except by law. The an
thcrr of that pamphlet asserts &double falsehood.
It was a deliberate attempt to misrepresent hie
position, unworthy of icy man who claimed any
respect for himself. It was a mlerepresentalitn
made for the purpose of attacking him, and
weakening the force of the Demoorstio party.
He would not have noticed this attack. but
that it wan aimed at the friende of popular
sovereignly. It wall intended to reach Judge
!honey, the noble standard-bearer of the Dem
ocratic party of Ohio; it wan intended for the
gallant Becker the Candidate for Governor in
Minnesota;' it ias intended to strike at the elo
quent Dodge, who was leading the Democratic
hosts in Iowa; It was a stroke at the candidates
of the Democracy throughout the country, who
eland on the same platform of popular sovereign
ty. When the author of that pamphlet attempt
ed to strike that doctrine, be made a blow at the
entire Democratic party of the North Week
Judge Douglas quoted come further statements
in the article of Judge Bleak, and pronounoed
them insidious falsehoods, put forth willfully
and with bad intent.

A great many persons are competing for the
prize, and the show promises to be large and in
teresting. Mr. Gorden, of Kickapoo Creek, has
already secured 1,113 scalps, and intends run
ning the number up to fifteen hundred before the
Fair!
ETHCOIDOC'O ELECTION TO BC CONTESTED.-
The Trenton (Tenn. ))Standard says that it is gen
erally understood that the election in tho Ninth
District of that State is to be contested. The
object of the movement is to embarrass hie
friends who desire:to see:him elected Speaker of
the house of Repreeontatives. It Is thought
that he can be thee defeated for that Moe, al
though there is no hope of depriving him of his
seat. The Nashville Dolma doubts the truth of
the Standard's statement, and seems to think
there will be no contest.
