DODGEI fairsurtro COO A PLOWING MAW:4I—
Blunder'? —One of our oolemporarice here
dealares.it as an actual foot, that at Adel, the
other diy, Oen. Dodge challenged Senator Kirk
wood to a plowing match, declaring If he could :
'not boat Kirkwood plowing, that he would give 1
up hie ideation, and that Mr. K. declined the
contest ! Now, why didn't our cotemporary tell
all the story, and why Mr. Kirkwood declined
this match' Our authority for the following Is
just ae good ae our neighbor's for his story, and
perhaps no better. It appoint that a Committee
of farmers were appointed to see this plowing
match folly carried out according to the uniform
rules on inch occasions. Dol it was provided,
on the suggestion of one of Kirkwood'a friends,
that each candidate bitch up his oWd horse, un
assisted and entirely alone, - This' woe regarded
by Dodge's friends with some suspicion, as they
bad doable about their candidate's Nullifies
lions," but it was finally agreed to. The candi
dates were placed on different olden of a big
barn, the animals, harness and plows all ready
at hand, while the committee retired to - i neigh
boring field to await their coming. Ina short
time the Plow Handle candidate drove- up his
horse and plow, all right. After a tedious delay,
the Ex-Minister from Spain not appearing, the
committee, fearing some accident, went in search
of the challenger. Approaching quietly, they
found him peeping around the corner of the
barn, trying to get a eight of his opponent, evi
dently to pick up an Idea or two. He was greatly
enamel at being thus detected, but put on a
bold face and said he would be all right in e
minute. The oommittea walked up, and the
spectacle of the home and plow woe exhibited.
One committeeman laid down on the ground
and rolled in convulsions of laughter; another
jumped op and down and hurrahed for Dodge;
while the third, who wan a rampant Democrat,
turned red In the face, haw-hawed, then placed
a blanket en Dodge and led him off through a
book gate and across a distant part of the emu ,
try. There stood the old horse grinning through
a collar half over his head, which collar the Ex-
Minister had attempted to push on, the wrong
end up for such a proem. But the most laugh
able thing was the horse standing with hisut-
Cooks between the plow handles, which the x
-11

hlinister had evidently taken for the zhaflr u .the
plow. What had troubled him (the "old War
borer," not the old plow horse,) Bo long was,
that he control find any "single tree" to which
to attach the traces, and he was peeping azoimd
the barn to see how his Opp01:1t had managed
his, when discovered. Of ammo Mr. Kirkwood
declined a match under such (drew/Lama.
Now why didn't our neighbor tell all the stoty -
we again ask. Does he mean to sai he, ditlyt
hear this part jost as truly and honestly itenus
heard from a good snares what- he did tell 7—
Davenport Gumie.
Is Ilensisa Irvin Barr. —A correspondent of
the New York Evening toot, in view of the many
distressing deaths which are recorded from burn
ing fluid, relates his awn experience with that
dangerous article as follows
“Several years ago, being a simple matt and
• student, I was induced by the cheapnaae,
cleanliness and illuminating power of the burn
ing fluid to make use of it. I procured a bran
new lamp of the beet quality and a quantity of
fluid from one of the largest dealers In town. 130
determined was I to guard against all risk that
no one was ever allowed to touch my temp but
myself. I filled it, I trimmed it, eorewed on the
cap, wiped it perfectly dry, and pat it away io
my closet every morning with my own hands.
After using the lamp some months very much
to my satisfaction, I was sitting one evening
reading by its light; it had been burning for
more than an hour, my back was toward Norton
suddenly the room was lighted with a brilliant
glare. I leaked around and the lamp was cov
ered with bright flames, playing up to the height
of several feet. I contrived to seize the lower
part of a, and threw it into the rater-poil,which
fortunately stood near. The next morning I
carried it to the maker, to whom I related ihr
oircumstance. He expressed surprise, but fin
ally said the soldering around the cap was Im
perfect; and I left it with him to be put in repair.
He returned it to me and said, " now ho would
warrant it," and I resumed Its use with fall con
fidence. But only a few weeks elapsed when
the eame thing occurred again, under the eame
circumstances, and from that limo I have never
used or touched the mixture.
In these caeca the lamp was of the beet eon
straotfoo; it had not been moved or touched for
boar'. It had been burning in an orderly way
for a coneiderable time, and I know that no pre
caution had been neglected in preparing It for
We.
If bnrniog dead Is nibble to these explosions
when used in the moat careful manner, it cer
tainly argues the most wanton indifference to
suffering and death to pat it into the hands of
Ignorant servant women and children. In my
judgment it le high time that this explosive
compound was driven out of use by the most
stringent statutory eneotmente."
Mawr years ego, Oliver Smith, en old bach
elor, who resided In one of the towns in Hamp
shire county, Mass., left the bulk of his property
to be managed by trustees until It should
amount to $400,000, when one half the Income
was to be annually given to twenty-one boys
who should faithfully perform certain conditions
of the wilt; one-fourth to eighteen girls; one
eighth to fifty-four young women for marriage
portions, end the remaining eighth to the same
number of indigent and deserving widows.
The required sum will he reached in October
next, end, amordingly, about $lO,BOO will
hereafter swankily be distributed among the
boys—about $515 apiece, making quite a prize
for those who are !inky enough to secure It;
and as this distribution is to be an annual
thing, an arm)' of 'boys will be In time lute&
idled with a handsome sum to etert life with.
The sum of $5,400 will be distributed among
the girls—s3oo apiece; $2,700 for marriage
portion,. making $5O apiece, which will pay
for the necessary "fixings;" and the eame Bum
($5O Spites) to the widows. The trustees of
the fund are annually elected, like all other
town officers, and the principal of the fund is
mainly loaned upon real estate in the various
towns of the county. We are unacquainted
with the prescribed requirements for obtaining
the price.

A RIPUDLICAI9 . ISIranna Baur? Ocr.—A Re
publican meeting was held at St. Paul the other
day, in which a "masterly epeech," by a distin
guished Republican, was out• short by the de-
Touring element. We quote from the St. Paul
Minnesotian of the 10th
We atop the press to announce that when Mr.
lfax was speaking, near the close of his re
marks, the theatre was discovered to be on fire
underneath the stage on which ho was elanding,
apparently in the extreme back part of the thea
ter. The alarm was given at once, and Mr.
Colfax immediately closed his masterly speech.
The audience retired in goad order, however,
and in a moment the building was cleared. It
was fortunate, too, for barely had the last per
eon crossed the threshold, ere the angry flames,
impelled by the wind which was blowing briskly
at tho time, filled the whole building, and in a
few moments only, it was entirely destroyed.
The building was a light "balloon frame," with
canvass top, and the flames licked it tip like
ehavings.
The theater was built in 1857, and was the
property, of V. Guerin, Esq. Value, probably,
$1,500. Neveral handfed dollars worth of scen
ery belonging to Ex-Manager Van Llpw was also
destroyed.
The lire was the work of an incendiary, as all
who eaw it at firet agree. When ling aeon, a
bnoket of water would have qaeneged it. It
was kindled in the - nnfrequented recesses under
the stage.
BUCHWHIAT AOAlll.—We mentioned last week
the remarkable fecundity of buckwheat, that a
stalk - was brought to this office from Stewart tp.,
containing 1,143 grains. This has canoed an
examination of the growing crop in other parts
of the country, with even more astounding re
sults. David Deyarmon, Esq., of Jefferson tp.
informs no that a stalk was taken from his field on
Saturday last by ono of his neighbors and the
groins counted by him and Mr. John Cook which
yielded 1447 grains. . . .
But W. CI. Patterson, sad William Elliott, de
'melba a etalk which they found in the Coll of
.1855 growing near a threshing floor In a field
'of the latter, where the ground was very rich,
and as h was an Isolated atalk, It had room to
..spread Itself," and grow to almost fabulous
dimensions. The main stalk was nearly en inch
in diameter at the root, with corresponding late
ral branches. Its appearance was so remarka
ble that they determined at once to take it to the
house and ascertain its product, and incredible
as it may seem it actually contalued 7,600 grains.
Tho whole making over a pint. It was after
wards ascertained that some 300 graine had shat
tered off, and were found on the ground from
whence the stalk had been taken.— Uniontown

APPLII CROP Or WESTORN NNW YORY.—The
apple mop of the counties of Niagara, Orleans,
Genesee, Monroe and Ontario is good, and In
Lisiogston, Seneca, Cayuga and Yates the crop

Tho Democrat stales that 15.000 barrele of
spplea have been shipped from Rooheeter since
the eeaooo commenced, and at least 25,0 Q 'more
will follow. The prices average about $l,OO per
barrel—the beet bring $1,25, arid the moat in
ferior kinds 75 cents. The Democrat eetimatee
that not less than 80,000 barrels will be &tipped
from Monroe county. Some set the entire apple
crop of the county as high as 450,000 barrels—
others reduce the figures one half. The total
crop of Western New York is equally to dispute,
one saying that it must be over 1,000,000 bar
rels, while another believes it cannot be more
than 600,000. There are very few apples to
spare in the Southern tier of New York oonntlee
generally, or in the eastern or southeastern part
of the State.
