'IBIJ 1s ' i 6, 1859 TiltOitYl 44 trer rein B The subject of grass culture is-one in which I take much interest, and I have been pleased t o see it fieouently . touched upon in year col umns. Ogler agricultural papers are also wa kinitip to the importanne of this greet farm product, and we may hope that the farmers themselves are giving, and will give it still better attention., "The best season," says the editor of the Fernier, "in all the'varied round'of the year for- seedingland to grass is probably the the month of - August." This remark opens azartiele on the 'lmportance of plowing up, and seeding old meadow.. An estimate is made of the cost and pull ts of the work—the first about $8 per acre, and the last about $l2, and not for one year only, but for 5 years, or .$6O as the remit of the small expenditure above named. This is not on over estimate, as he would "say nothing of manure. as that is farm product replaced by -the crops"—a re turn of a portion of the hay after its use by the stock. It was not my object, however, 0, comment upon the Farmer's article; save to eaforre the reasonableness of the work—applying it more especially to seeding to grass after grain crops, oats and barley particularly, and the winter grainy, if the spring seeding of clover ha s failed and it is desuableto grow timothy erred top upon the land (of which a remark here after.rm All farmers are familiar with the coin It that:it is difficult to get grass. seed • to Catch if sown with' spring gram, particular. ly with, oats, lithe - otitis' on proves dry or if hot weather prevails for twenty five or.thirty days ettasecutively.-. - 14 'Winter gmbi, - Ai:lifts the seed was sown very early and brii made a fa vorable growth, the same fact has an inflii crice—especially if seeding to clover has not been followed by adresaing of plaster. A fact or. two from experience will illustrate my meaning. One year I seeded on winter wheat to clover and timothy—the grass seed lookwell--the ground was covered with young .• plants. . The latter part of May was dry; as also. a good share of June—at harvest not a signal the young grass plants remained. The same was the result over a good share of the land seeded with oats sand barley. Only on the lowest ground and where the soil was springy did the grass endure the de:Rini—there it pow as well as could be desired. On a rather mucky lot gown to oats (very thinly, to favor tho grass,) the seeding was nearly as =ached' a failure. -In each cases what should be done? On a good wheat soil, and where it was desirable to grow wheat, one would not care to grow timothy. This grass requires so nearly the same elements from the toil that wheat re that it cannot profitably be employed in theaame rotation. It prefers, with oats, a moister soil. Clover is bettor united to a wheat soil, as orely practical farmer understands, and such soils will produce better crops of clover than of timothy. On soils Suited to the latter many expensive failures are teaching us the lesson that it is running a great risk of loss of seed in spring on grain crops. What then should be done ? I think, from expert, ence and observation, that the best plan would be to sow spring grain, and after harvest har row er plow the stubble, and sow the grass seed just before or after a rain, any time from the 10th of Avast to the 25th of September, but the earlier the better, provided the ground was sufficiently moist to cause the seed. to veg etate immediately. Repcd instances have been given in the Country ntleman of good crops obtained under this method. Should the time above indicated be dry and hot, and hence unfavorable for this work, I should scarcely risk the effect of winter upon grass sown and starting later. But myself and many others have secured a good catch of timothy by sowing late in November—as late as the work can be done before winter sets in— so that the seed does not grow until the next spring. Then it takes an early start, becoming large plough to withstand our summer drouth, • and giving a partial crop the first season; I shall reseed , next week on oat stubble, and also on portions of a low meadow, where the grass was winter killed—where, though sown again this spring, the "catch" is too,"spotty" to snit my ideas of a good meadow. Many other thoughts occur, but I will' not further lengthen the present communication. e • • s €'-> _ I _ t tf : , ~. 4 quantity of this Invaluable Remedy has been ponhased by citimms of tho United Etat , » during the short limo it Unbent bet,. the nubile.
