I co mm enced wining by myself, althea years
ego, as
,I- bode many limes beard it remarked
that if meg/cern be.selected from stalks bearing
two or more esnr, every stalk in the field would
soon produce ism ears each; and,,, „if any' brought
f u ll thrill ears, by planting 114, corn taken
from the best one of the three ears en the stalk,
the majority of the stalks would produce three
ems; and after the same manner, four ears might
be made to grow on *bah stalk. Being pleased
with ericlni system of management- -that Woald
give two or three ears where only one bad been
accustomed to grow ---T practised selecting, for
seed, only the beet ears cif the two which grew
on s tingle stalk. The result, en the whole, was
very eatiefietery, if the corn wail:dented In a
eery rich soil. But I soon found that in those
portions of a field which were, not very rich, hot
rather barren, there was adcoided disadvantage
in puing such seed, tincindlt, When . hill of
corn chanced to stand where the soil was not I
rich enough to produce a large 'bilk, with two
good ears - on it, one ear would be et an inferior
size, while the ",other would tie only a nubbin :

I followed up the practice closely for a few
pars, WWI nearly every stalk had lino ears.
' But ail the 'oil of my fermis not scorn.soil—i.
e., not so Well adapted to raising corn as , other
kinds of graln—l abtadoned the primfles of se
lecting seed only from theatalks which produeed
two ears each, and selected before the cons was
put op,' those ears that ripen's] first, whether
there was one or two ears on a stalk. I became
fully satisfied that un such a soil es mins, it Is
mortreconomical to raise one good ear on 0 stalk,
baring large kernels,- than to nice two nubbins,
with email kernels and , a greater *menet of cob,
requiring more time and strength to husk it.

as the most economical and the moat profitable;
hut when a stalk produces two ears, or -. three,
and they are of an inferior size, I prefer to have
an the orn which grows op one stalk 111 'memo.
The kernel, as a general rule, will be larger and
fairer—requiring leas labor to husk IL
A soil mast Of necessity be very rich in tzar:
to produce two or three large ears on each stalk,
and when the soil is for the most part of nther
an Inferior character, all the corn that can he
produced in ono hill can be best brought out in
large earicwith but ono to a 'MIL When a bill
of cornhappens to stand where there is an excess
of fertilizing or corn-producing matter in the
soil, nature will often provide for using up most
of the abundando of such matter by starting •
second ear on each stalk, or by swelling the ker
nels of the single ear to an unusual size. If we
can get three or four large ears to shill through
out the whole field, with four stalks in a hill,lt is
my candid conviction that we get quite as much
corn as we yeah] were we to plant corn which
will produce two ears to the stalk—unless the
soil is unusually rich for corn. - But when the
seed is of a kind of corn that will bring forth two
or three ears on each stalk, and there is not a
80km:tent amount of available matter within the
reach of the roomer the stalks to produce two or
three large ears, fall and plump, nature is
obliged to ant short her work which she has laid
out; and, Instead of swelling two or three ears
large and full, she is able to produce nothing
hut nubbins, or one good ear of medium size,
while the others on the same stalk are so very
small and inferior that they are scarcely worth
husking. It cannot have escaped the observa
tion of those who have been accustomed to husk
much corn that in many instances one good ear
is found on a stalk, and on the same stalk there
was thq form of an ear—husks and a cob ; with
a few scattering kernels on the nob.
The reason usually for such a phenomenon is,
that theca was not a sufficient amount of corn
producing material in the soil within the reach
of the roots of that stalk to fraetify two ears ;
India some instances each a want of fractuatien
may be attributed to the fact that the blank ear
was not properly impregnated by the pollen of
the corn when it was in bLoseem.
I am personally acquainted with a very good
termer in this region, who has followed up this
practioe of selecting his aced corn, from chalks
, which bear two, three and fear ears, and now
most of his stalks have three ears on them, and
many stalks four ears. He contends that there
• is a very great advantage in such a system of
management, because he thinks he obtains much
