Tue SLAVE Taa4 &curette:tr.—The near approach of the Nlgthern elections has caused a general change in the views of the democrats, North and South, with regard to the re-opening of the African Slave Trade. These hottest and fair denting politicians, in Imitation of the Pres ident, havo all arrayed themselves on the side of philanthropy and in public meetings and through the medium of their newspapers, boldly denounce a measure which during the pendency of the Southern State elections they either de fended or said nothing about. This is, Mita hest aspect, but a paltry trick, and must be regarded as such by every person capable of forming an opinion. It is really amusing to observe the manner in which some of these recently convert ed journals amulet for their sudden change of front. Tho New Orleans Crenent, which during the entire summer was engaged in flattering the poor white voters of the South with the promise of cheap doves, now attempts to laugh off the affair by saying that its object was to "hoax the North and to enjoy the howling of the abolition pti," ; It should bo remembered, however, that the ',good people of the South were not let into the secret of thin joke until their votes were no 'longer in demand—a fair specimen of Southern chivalry and honor. The St. Louis Republican, which has been very quiet in reference to the proposed traffic, when silence was eervieetible to the party, has discovered rather auddenly that "it Is about time that this humbug should be exploded." Of course, since it has served the purpose of its inventors in deluding their peril. cans in the South, it would not do to let it enter into the politica of the North where it would be only a cease of trouble. The Republican is very sharp, and is a worthy organ of that com bination of political knavery and deception, which is palmed ou the country under the spe cious name of "Democracy."' Another South , . ern democratic journal assures us that "two thirds of the Southern people aro oppoimil to the African Slave trade—a - piece of information which, like the reel, was withheld until a time , whets it was deemed prudent to divulge it. And yet these are the politicians who have controlled cur government for the last twenty years fl But the democrats, in agreeing up'en a system of falsification, ehould, under no circum stances, negleath compare notes. The follow ing statement, on the authority of one of their leading men, would not have appeared had they observed this precautiito. The Washington Era reports Senator Douglas as having said "that not lees than fifteen thousand slavea have been imported into the Union, within the last year, and that he had personally seen more than three hundred newly imported negroes at Vh-La• brirg, during his recent Southern tour, and many mare at Memphis." The St. Louis Hepuldtcan— ..3 if we mistake not—the New Orleans Cres cent, aro both friendly to the Presidential aspi rations of the "little giant." flow will they die. * pose of this statement" Will they place it un der the hoed of 'humbug," or will they record it among the "pradtical jokes" of the &moo. We are inclined to !Inspect that these veracious editors have Lot completely covered up their tracks, notwithstanding their , extraordinary cleverness. Their game is too transparent. Ova CANPIDATES AT Ilome.—We find the fol lowing statement in one of our exchange papers "The homes of our candidates for Surreyor General and Auditor General—each bid fair to • carried by them reapeotively. Gen. Kelm, we apprehend, will have little difficulty in ob taining a majority in Berke, and Mr. Cochran, we are informed, will receive a majority in York. The People'e State ticket will go in with not lees than 30,000 majority, and we should not be sur prised to ace it run up to 50,000." Berke and York are both locofooo strongholde. The former in famous thoughont the Common wealth for its innuendo majorities on the dark side of the question; and York is fully as much devoted to the mitnamed Democracy, but by smaller majorities. That the personal worth of qur candidstea will storm these political Gib ratters spas volume., in thr.r favor. We can speak knowingly of Mr. Cochran's position in York from old recollections. Although that old county, with all its excellencies, is blindly wedded to locofocoiam, each is bin personal worth that we feel an abiding confidence in hie carry ing it by an overwhelming majority, on the second Tneaday of October. 'Her citizens will vote for him, without respect to party, Lecauue they knots Ana—and it is not often. they vote againsttheir political convictions. Treasurer, J. K. Cleaver. Commissioner, E J. Thomas. Among the reeolatione arlopted wee the fol- lowing Resolved, That we heartily approve of the course of lion. Simon Cameron in the Senate of the United States In his noble and able efforts in behalf of Freedom and Protection, and that we note with pride the recent expressions-of public opinion in this and other States, appreciative of hie, labors, and demonstrating his high posi tion before the country. It is rumored that the Prince of Wales who le - about to visit Canada will not travel In the Uni ted States, except under a strict incognito. It hes been decided that he would be subject to too much emotion; so that his rather delicate health Would Suffer from the incessant eerenades and visit's to which he would bo eubjected. The ter rible enthusiasm of the American people is much dreaded in Europe. There princes of the blood and great Palma generally go abroad without any mob following et their heels or circumscri bing their movements, but here we make mach ado over every new comer,. from a patriot exile to a concert singer, from a Turkish surveyor of 'novice to a ballet dancer. No prince in power ful enough to face an American multitude. The current varied, increseing and decreasing alternately, but, by graduating the adjustment to the current, a anfficiently stea dy effect wee obtained to work the line very well. Ton CONNECTICUT TOBACCO CHOP. —The tohao• co in Connecticut is now lying out for drying. Nearly double the quantity of land, of any for mer year—ne we estimate it after viewing a good portion of the State—has been sown to this crop the present summer. We may have over-esti mated the amount, but the increased breadth in tobacco this year cannot possibly be lees than T o o per cent. greater than in any preceding season. Whether the amount of good tobacco eecured for the market will prove to be larger than last year, remains to be even; that depends upon several contingencies. In the firer. place, a good portion of the crop is backward, not yet ready for cutting, and consequently not yet out of dan ger from frost; whether any of it was injured by frost on Monday morning we have not heard. Again, many persons wholly luespericoced in tobacco.raieing and curing have gone into it thie eesteon, aad the reiult may be a considerable quan tity of a.poor article. On the whole we judge the Connecticut crop will be fully equal, if not superior (quantity included.) to aoy of its pre. decessare. We have heard he value estimated at $1,000,000. Last year the crop was 10,000 caves, and prices averaged about 17 cents per lb; what the price of the crop of 1056 will average, remains to be determined by eircumetarmve Hartford Tim..
