opening the . Campaign.
So far, the political elements in this county
have been in a elate °frappes quite unexampled.
..One :or two of the locofoco candidates bays been
• circulating among the people, and deluding
. - themselves with the idea of their possible eleo
' !ion ; but otherwiao there has not been a ripple
on the political surface.
This deadly quiet and apathy is the very thing
the Republican party is Allegheny county has
the most remem - to (ear. The policy of the Dem
onnitio party throughout. the State is to encou
rage this feeling by doing nothing to disturb it.
The word has been passed all along the lines to
lie low, keep mum, hold no meetings, and do
nothing to rouse the opposition to action ; but
at the same time to organize quietly, and bring
out the full Democratic vote on election, day.
In this way they hope to catch the opposition
napping and steal a march upon them. They
have no hope of beating ns in a fair, stand-up
fight; but by pursuing a skulking, sneaking
course they expect, to 101 l us into a Übe security
and take advantage of it to our defeat. For this
purpose, large sums of money hare been raised
in Washington and sent into the State; the chief
men of the party_ are passitig, unannounced
from county to county, to give the word to the
local managers ; and the party machinery has
everywhere been profusely oiled, to make it
worksmoothly and without noise enough to dis
turb the opposition. Messrs. WHIG= and Rows,
the locofooo candidates for Auditorand Surveyor
General, Mr. insosaw, Radian's right hand
man, and other , prominent Democrats, are now
busily engaged in quietly visiting the different
counties in the State, arranging this programme,
and a gentleman just from Washington, who is
familiar withlhe ropes, assures us the admin
istration confidently calculates upon winning by
this game. If it can carry, Pennsylvania-in this
'• wayXwill be cited - as an evidence of the pop
itiarity of Buchanan, and will be used as an ar-
Ohtani for - his re-nomination.
The strong opposition counties, such as Atte
gheny and Lancaster, are to be most industri
• ously let alone. The party is to do nothing,
openly, in these counties, which looks like ac
tion and as there are no prominent offices to
till in either, the calculation is that the opposi
tion leaders will be satisfied with one or two
thousand majority, enough to elect the county
nominees, and let the State ticket go by default.
Against such a scheme as this it is the duty
of the Republican party of Allegheny county to
exercise-its utmost vigilance. We can give fire
thousand majority for the State ticket, if we
will ; and shall we not will to do it 7 A majority
of ins thousand, of course, will do just as well
net five, for the county ticket; but the State
ticket will need all the help we can give it, and
we will be faithless to our duty if we suffer it
to fait through our negligence. Last year we
gave the Stale ticket a majority of 4300; but
(het majority was obtained by effort ; and 4 like
effort will be mammary to enure it now.
We caution our friends, therefore, to beware
of the false warily into which the enemy is
seeking to lead them. Do not be deceived by
their apparent but delusive apathy. They are
as active as they can be, bat their effort is to
bide the signs of that activity from you. It will
require you to be up and at work if you expect
to win by the old majority.
The opulent of lUD is the preliminary battle
'..uggle. If we carry the
is it to no without much

Tae,Nouci PSOCLE or ITALY.—Tho slanders
of a thousand years heaped upon the people of
Italy; have been refuted by the conduct of that
people"during the stirring events of this year .
In spite of the long reign cf Pricatcrafi, and
Kitimat, the people are still able of govern
ing themselves—they still display the choicest
qualities of manhood—the noblest !mita of pat
riotism. The Londe Muer, pave them this
tribute, which is one of the fiDeet *rat imooi a / a
ever penned of the inherent e xcellence of the
people and the rights of man to self goverment:
"The condition which the Austrian and the
Priest
party througoout Italy and throughout
Europe have always declared to be the condi
dorm of anarchy bare come to be the actual con
ditions of Italy. The will of the Italian people has
DOW fora considerableperiodbeen the only source
of action. They have feared no foreign force;
they have been stronger than any domestic op.
pressiou. Everywhere throughout the Peninsula
the instruments of tyranny have broken in the
bands of tyrants The Pope's mercenaries ,
were permitted even to each cities and to butch
er the innocent inhabitants, and they were not
destroyed; but-they will be restrained from re
peating the same offence. The Swills troops of
the King of NapWs were destroyed, not by the
people, bat by the Prince who hired them. The
Grand Dakea of the Italian Duchies went forth in
peace with allwho chose to follow them. There
le no force, except the French, throughout the
Italian Peninsula which could control or inter
rupt a great popular insurrection. If the Ital
ians were what Italians have been thought to
be, all the cities of that fair country ought at
this moment to be echoing revolutionary cries
end flowing with blood. The papal authorities,
the Austrian partisans, and all the priests ought,
if what we have been so sedulously told were
true, to be et this moment under the sentence
of revolutionary tribunals. There was much to
remember. Bitter oppresssion bad left a rank
ing wound in many a heart, and it would not
have fairly caused surprise if some excesses had
marked this new period of exemption from the
threat or presence of en armed force. The fair
ground of !uprise, however, is in that which has
really happened. Martini's name has never
been heard throughout the whole of this contest.
When the hope of a reasonable freedom dawned,
all the grotesque goblins of the darkness seem
to have flitted away. We have heard nothing of
the Red Republicans, with their secret conclaves
and their secret stabs. No Republic, "one and
indivisible," has started into a spasmodic exist
ence. Every proceeding has been as reasonable,
as orderly, and as little influenced by extrava
gance and enthusiasm as if it had been directed
by an English church-warden,and modeled upon
the proceedings of an English parish vestry.
Private property and personal security were
never better guarded than et the present mo
ment, when all Central Italy Is relieved from the
presence of those foreign armies which have been
so long maintained there under the pretext of
preserving "order," preventing "anarchy," and
repressing the mischievous instincts of the peo
ple. The people hove bees disappointed by the
terms of the peace, and they are now alarmed
lest they shall have to tight a hopeless fight
against invaders whom they had hoped to wet
-come lie deliverqrs. But they have not commit
ted a single act of violence. So far as they
have yet gone, they have shown a marvellous
aptitude for managing their own affairs, and a
wonderful power of abstaining from those crimes
of revenge to which the Italian rage has always
been supposed particularly prone. Their con
duct has been exemplary even beyond the power
of calumny to question it, for doubt not that if
there had been one questionable act, one in
stance of severity capable of a double version,
we should have heard of it."
THE RELIGIOUS REVIVAL IN INELAND—Its Ex
tent and Origin.—The Belfast correspondent of
the New York Chronicle, of this week, gives the
following interesting pamieulare as to the rise
and progress of the preseit religious movement
in Ireland':
"An I nee some statements in relation to the
great religious excitement in Ireland, which aro
not very accurate, I will devote the whole of
this letter to that subject, and will lay before
your readers as accurate a view of it as I can
gather from the published - documents within my
reach. I do this the more readily as it is , by
the confession of all, the most wonderful reli•
gious movement in the Church's history in mod
ern times. There has been nothing like it in the
past. It is changing the social, the mental and
moral aspects of society where it prevails, and
onward the tido of holy influence is rolling with
increasing power.
This work at present, then, is confined to the
North of Irelead. It extends over five counties
in that part of the island. Belfast, Coleraine
arid Londonderry are the centre of its influence,
though not of Da origin, but the smaller towns
and villages for miles around are under its pow
er. There is nothing impassioned, excitable or
superstitious in the character of the people.
Unlike the Celts of the South arid Vest, who are
full of these elements, they are the descendant/1
of the men of the "English pale," and rxhil.it
many of the features of the Sareu character.
It is the stronghold of Protestant influence, and
Presbyterianism is the prevalent eccleelastical
element among the dioeidente from the Church.
The latter has great weight, the. churches of the
body are numerous, the ministers men of men
tal power and rich and varied culture. Nothing
can be further from enthusiasm than the minis
try of these men. I only need mention the
names of Dr. Cook, Prof Edgar, Gibson, Ill'Cosh
and others, who have tittered their solemeke—o
victions that the work is of God -
now their whole soul to '
vancement. .• •
The o 5
—ie movement is of singulai
-le same agency, it the main, as
...ailed, more or lee; the commencement of
your great work, has been employed here.
Prayer in both cases was the spring from which
the streams of blessedness flow. Nothing in the
elate of the Church to warrant the expectation.
Everything was going on se usual. The same
usual round of formal services. Minister., met
their people and preached. A few attended
prayer-meetings; congregations iu many places
small, and a cold, dead formality reigned more
or lees in all sects. No special means were em
ployed to disturb this spiritual repose—no par
ticular wakening ap of minister and people
marked it—God would work in his own way,
showing us that by the feeblest agency he oould
accomplish the most marvelone moral effects, and
that be could dignify faith and prayer. As far
se I can gather from the printed accounts which
are before me, the origin was as follows •
In one ease, a pions lady is on a visit to the
North. She becomes deeply interested in the
spiritual condition of a poor old man. She visite,
reads and preys with him. Again and again she
does this. The dark mind at least opens to the
, ght, and the hard heart la touched by the Sa
ip's love. He is converted. Within hie own
`a., deep anxiety eprings (or the conversion
"e. He cannot repress it. Under the
same truth she is brought, and
rejoices in Christ. They tell

The jury, without hesitation, acquitted her;
and the chairman said that if any man attemp
ted to kiss a woman against her will, she had a
perfect right to bite off his nose, if she had a
fanny for eo doing.
Tni - Pope has sent a large bundle of curets to
England after a Workman, escaped from his
slam manufactory, and who revealed some of the
eecrels of the art. Tho form of excommunica
tion curses the poor mechanic "in his basket and
in his store, not only in eating, drinking, and
being hungry and thirsty, but in sleeping, in
walking, working, standing, testing; not only
in the power of his body, but in all his members,
in the hair of hie bead, temples, forehead, ears,
eyebrows, cheeks, jawbones, nosirildi fore teeth,
and grinders; in lips, throat, shoulders, wrists,
arms, hands, veins, groins, thighs—him knees,
legs, joints, and nails, living and aging." The
Pape attaches a good deal of Importance to alum,
from his pains to curie this poor fellow from the
crown of his bead to the sole of his fool; and lest
his own influence is not enough, he calls into
hi. aid St. Michael, St. John, St. Peter, St.
Paul; St. Andrew, and a whole oompany of
martyrs and confessors, "from the beginning of
the world to averlastingagee." The atringthoy

Tor Kura or PIMSBIA.—As bet relationswith

to put the supreme authority of the Slate upon
some basis more durable and solid than a Re

Frederic William IV., are now aseembled at EMS
-to consult upon the disposal of the crown. The
Empress Dowager of Russia, the Grand Duchess

Charles of Prussia, make up the family party.
The King's physicians declare that though hie
klajesty looks stouter and better than before his
journey to Italy, his malady has made terrible
progress. Paralysis of several limbs is con
stantly looked fur, and the celebrated oculist,
Dr. Graefe, lute announced that there is reason
to fear that the King will shortly become quite
blind. It is a qaestion, therefore, of Immediate
significance in the aspect of European affairs,
whether the Sovereignty of Prussia shall pees
et once into the keeping of the Prince Regent,
or be transferred from him to his son Frederic
William, the son-in-law of Victoria.
Free.—On the 17th inst., the steam tannery
of John Hamlet & Sons, about three miles south
of South Blairsville, on the Pennsylvania It. R ,
was destroyed by fire. The fire originated from
the friction of the bark mill, which was in ope-
ration during the day. When discovered the
destructive element had made such headway as
to render vain all the exertions that were made
to save the building and contents. The entire
loss is about ten thousand dollars, there tieing
