part of this State, the Deer and Cattle being the
chief victims of its ravages. Mr. David Rhodos
informs the Editor of the Ironton Furnace, that
be found fourteen dead Deer at one pond in
Bollinger county, and antabere of others scatter
ed through the woods, some dead and others
dying from the effects of the malady. In Wavle
county, no lees than fifty were found dead, near
Greenwood Valley, in that comity, and in the
neighboring woods the air was loaded with the
stench from their carcasses. At the Falling
Spring, in Carter comity, thirty died in one
night ; and at Eleven Point, in Oregon comity,
a large number was found. The Cattle have
been attacked by the affection, also; but its ef
fects on them have not been so terrible as on the
Deer, which ara threatened with utter extermi

as that whioh canoed such havoc among the

Men. PARTMITON PLIAICD.—The old lady
thus speaks of the success of her new volume, iu
the Gazette •
"I'm shore I'm grateful of Bich favor," said
Partington, when inured of the suocess . of
her book; " I've always obserred that a book
cells in jest the purportion that there'e people to
buy it; and though this of mine mayn't be as
brilliant se a gas meteor, or as yoludatious as
the northern lights, it seems to please people
full as well as a book of sermons or a quarter
dictionary. Well, I'm always glad when people
feel happy, because I know they are enjoying
themselves." "Do you know," queried old
Roger, "why your book is like the corner of
Washington and School streets." "Why," said
he, "it is because a great many people go buy
it." She smiled at what was really a very old
joke, and Ike laughed outright as the old lady
in her agitation gave him a new dime, instead of
a penny for which he had been leasing her.
Loos OUT TOR NUMBER Oar.—We Bee by the
Washington correspondent of the Trthune that
the Deputy Pest Masters throughout the country
are like a clam of jurymen—they find for them
selves first. Under the present financial emer
gency in the government, arising from, deple
ted treasury, these officiate are taking the ground
that the act. of 1854, fixing their compensation
by a percentage on the receipts of their officee,
in a permanent appropriation, and that, there
fore, they cen draw their pay, notwithstanding
the late failure of the Poet Office Appropriation
Bill. The matter has not yet come before the
Postmaster General, uor will it, probably, until
the rendering 'of quarterly accounts. It will
then be decided, no doubt, whether or not these
gentlemen can pay themselves first-, leaving what
is left for the government. As this is a sort of
a grab administration, such a line of policy may
be thought in the strict path of democratic duty.
We shall see.
Too Svaixea to Lortoca.—There is no pros
pect of a settlement of rho difference between
the builders and their men. About :220 of the
largest builder. have joined the defence associ
ation, and probably the 11),000 men they employ
will he discharged on Saturday, unless they agree
to the conditions now laid down. Both parties
are confident of victory. The masters anticipate
abundant labor from the provinces, which the
men say they cannot get. The operatives on the
other hand expect general support from all the
trades throughout the kingdom, and boast that
they can remain on strike for six weeks, upon
their own resources, without calling for Desist
ance from their own or from other societies.
The gas companies' strike has ceased.
