Ae there is probably nothing in the present state of the religions *field of such interest as the revival in Ireland, we notetenake no apology to our readers for occupying farther space with incidents illustrative of the extent and power of the work. It is pronounced "one of the most remarkable outpourings of the holy Spirit whiob has ever been witnessed." Not only ministers and laymen from Scotland, but a deputation of Independent ministers from London, have IX pressed their strongest mml, looooB of genuineness of the movement. While, perhaps, the Presby terian churches have shared most largely In its benefits, the Episcopal, Wesleyan and Independ ent churches have heartily 00-operated. As a specimen of the work among the Epis copalians, we give the following from the Bel fast News Letter : "At the services In the different Episcopal churches in Belfast on Sunday last the coupe gallons were large. In St. Paul's Episcopal Church, at the morning service, about nine of the congregatioe were brought under a similar influence to that felt id other congregations, and throughout this province at the present time. They were struck down as penitents seeking for mercy, and prayer was continued with and for them during the afternoon, and many others re mained with them. At the morning service in Christ Church, Episcopal, four of the congrega tion bad to be carried out of the church under deep ow:Motion. In the other Eplecepal church es Gm revival epirit seemed to beat work amongst the people, and its influence to be felt. The ministers of the Established church, as well as those of other churches, are:engaged almost day and night in visiting penitents from house to house; and some of them must by this time, be themselves completely exhausted through labor and exertion." From the mass of revival report, in our for eign papers we make the following eeleetions as illustrating the peculiar character of the re vival. A Scotch ruling elder, visiting Ireland, thus writes to the Edinburgh Witness : "Every day and hour I am more and more impressed with the importance and reality of the present religions awakening and revival. It is manifestly the work of the Spirit of God Yee terday evening I went some eight miles from this city, to where the movement haft made coneldera bk. progress. It too, was in a pnrelyegricultural district, no village or hamlet being within some miles, yet, In the very height of the hay !wryest I found at 7 o'clock P. M three hundred and fifty people assembled. Otte of the recent con vert, addressed them. He said, have been a Sabbath School teacher for several years, four years a communicant, yet,' said he, 'until with in the last ten days, I thought myself religious while a stranger to Christ. I may say that I never prayed until within the last brit:tight.' And in the homely accents of the district, but with touching eimplioity, he warned and be sought them to flee from the wrath to come. I addressed the convert claret, la wbieh there were three Roman Catholics, akd slit - atter seventeen others; and aft erwardsvpoiel3 the congemation. One person was prostrated whsle I was speaking. Afterwards I met with eeriest enquirers. - While speaking to them the door opened, and a fees, radient with peace, and happiness, and joy, was seen. A woman about twenty-eight years of age came forward to the minister and said, could not go away till I told youl have totted peace No tongue tell tell how happy I have been since Wednesday. I could not bane thought of it.' .'And how did you find peace " raid the mirleter 'o,' said she ' 'I wee in great ',knees on Wednesday, jinn bordering on de , :6:lluent a th a e d g rn ar . d do e e n th a e n in d !La: how r centime them , little we thought of. and then that be inade'ln;„bic r • wor..i.hi wall and that he had not crushed me; have done; and then the thought elide Jesus In sparing me came into my heart; end t could not speak for joy; I just wept and wept ! 0, young friends, (the added,) bald on, you will Bed peace; and. Oil it be like mine, you won't be able to tell U ? The accent of thin woman was different from the others; and I said, 'what part of Scotland aro you from r 'Ayrshire.' 'What part of it ?' 'Kilmarnock.' She could 'peak, however, only of Christ's Lire and her joy. 0 that Kilmarnock had such' revival as hoc blessed her! I was surprised at first when told that the converts immediately recognized each other. Well I don't wonder at It; I think I could myeelf pick them ant of a congregation, and not mistake one in tee. There is an expres sion of joy and peace that is quite peculiar—glut bright shining after the rain.' In this district sutural Roman Catholics have come to Jeans. The employer of one of them, an intelligent and pions physician told me, 'my servant', whole conduct and appearance are altered; her work is better done by far; she reads the Bible, and there is such an expression of happiness in her face as I never saw there before, or indeed on any one, save these who after prostration have found peace.' "The work progreuee here steadily. I will close this letter with two cases. The first is that of a man nominally connected with the Presbyterian Church. Ile never attended, save an odd time at sacramental Beaune, lie then paid the minister that compliment, which wan all ho got in lieu of stipend. Ifialimily seldom, some of them for a epees of seven years, had not darkened a church door. They came to the meotinge; first one, then another was converted. Be attended himeelf, and saw his two remaining unconverted children struck down. 'What!' said he, are all my family le be taken, and me left?' In the bitterness of his soul he cried for mercy. He left the place--eame back; still the cry was, 'Shall Ibe left!' The Lord had mercy on him also. A whole godless family is now changed, and their faces turned Zionward. I=l . _ . "A pious Scotchman, superintendent of a large Sabbath tithed In this city, had, like many others, great doubts about the movement, hear ing of It only at a distance. Soon after it began here, be said in the Sabbath wheal, I will be happy if any one will say a few words Is the school. A little girl—a modest little orphan girl—under eight years of age, rose up and raid:.—'Dear friends—Last/lands, I went home with a very elok heart. I thought it would break. I was very unhappy,, for I was very anted. I told my brother; he said he would pray for me, but that did me no good: 'Re told me then to pray myself to Christ. I did pray to him to take away my sloe; he did it (or me at once, and I have been very happy ever slues. And, dear friends, I just thought I would tell you all that Jesus will take away your burdens and make you happy too.' Daring the time these words were uttered, the stlibmia of death reigned in the school, and superintendent, teachers and scholars were all in team. There was something irreeletable In the solemn yet childish tone and eloquent simplicity of the appeal of the little girl. And the superintendent Bald, 'ln our midst that word la fulfilled to-day: Out of the mouth of bushes and sucklings thou hut per reeled praise.' " Another account Bays : "Oa Friday morning, about three o'clock, • prooession, mostly composed of young men and women, to the number of abut fifty, proceeded through some of the streets of Belista, dinging hymns and psalms. On Tuesday, at noon, there was held s meeting of children in Berry street Churoh, Belfast. There were about three hun dred present, and a considerable number of vie hors. Children of not more than twelve years of age, of both coxes, publicly engaged In prayer. The Rev. Pasteur Emu:sell, a distin guished French Protestant minister, was present. These meetings aro to bo continued on two days of the week. At the same church, on Thursday evening, a letter was read from an infidel of ' thirty years' standing, describing the terrible ordeal through which the Spirit of God had lately put him be finding a lodgment In his heart. The meeting woe but a short time over when measen gem arrived, requestingattendanceon twoyoung men who'had been overtaken at IL They were E l eelhalls Who bid conic out of mere =kw but were pierced by a word of admonition ad armed to scoffers. A singular incident occur red in the case of a young woman who had engaged to another to attend the meeting on Wednesday evening. She violated the engage ment, and went to the Queen's Inland, where the spent [several hours. Bat Abe was moved to return by the church and enter, and she had not been many minutes inaide its walls until the Lord laid his hand upon her. She bitterly be wailed her indifference to the things of God, and the mockery with which she assailed the subjects of grace. On Friday the church was crowded. Converts joined in the services. A convert, who confessed to sll& of inddelity and ungodliness for thirty years, recanted the errors of the past, and professed his faith in Christ— the fruit of the present movement —addressed the meeting with propriety, eloquence and pow er, and expressed hie moire to preach Christ. He is evidently a man of high Intellectual cul ture and extensive attainments. The narrative of his past life made a deep impression on the audience. The manifested convictions were nu morons, and embraced, as is now almost Invari ably the case, some Rome•Catholice among the trophies of Divine grace. The mode of treating convicted souls has now assumed a systematic form. The general congregation retiree after the benediction. The prolonged meeting is to attend to the convicted, to counsel Inquiring cools, and to supplicate the Heavenly Throne on behalf of epeoial object'. The visitors remain, and the personal friends of those under convic tion." =EMU The Rev. Mr. Trenoh, rector of Newton, Bells, county Meath, In • letter having reference to what came under Me observation at Ballymoney, writes: "The most interesting case which has come within my knowledge is that of a young Presby terian minister, of particularly pleasing address, who has been for two years In charge of a con gregation at in the county of Derry. The Rev. J. C. had come here to visit Me mother, who was anxious he should see the work. I happen ed to hear Mr. O. relate more or less of what took place, when he was affected four llama. Mr. C. was very anxious to explain that his case was not one of conversion as much as of revival, • and this room* applies toyer, many eases. Mr. Mr. C. told ash. felt himself, in his own home, becoming very weak, felt a weight about his heart, sank down upon the sofa, sighed and sobbed, sod could not help exclaiming, 'Lovely Jesus.' He said he had now 'the witness to himself' in the way which he sever had before; had a degree of happiness which he could not express, and had ever since been uninterrupted. ly fielded with his love. The Rev. Mr. P. told me that be attributed his affection to im premien., made on seeing a convert and some children who were excited. When Mr. C. first saw Mr. P. after hie revival, he fell on his neck, calling him hie father and brother la Christ. Mr. P. further mentioned a curious cam, which he knew to be • fact, of some children who had been locked up by their mother to prevent their going to meeting, and on her return they were found praying and singing." Mr. Trench, in another letter, says: "A solicitor in Belfast informed me that liti gation had decreased; a publican, that no man could live by the trade; and policeman, that now they had less to do than usual. Beyond all doubt the most abandoned of women have for eaten the street' and cried to Jesus for mercy. I have beard Interesting anecdotes of quarrels made up. Thom seen it stated that deposits in savings banks have greatly Increased, and I can certify that political demonstrations, 'gendering strife,' seem to be in abeyance. It In true that the editor of a public newspaper has been en tirely incapacitated from collecting his thoughts on any other subject. It is true that 4Mmposi tore in• printingeffice have been unable, through strong feelings of sin and bodily weakness, to go on with their ordinary work. It is true that the business in &Marimbas been stopped through the ramecause; but I believe it has been already in some degree made op to their masters by the return on Monday morning of 'bands' which used to be disabled by intemperance on the Sab bath, The more I see of this work the more mysterious it appears to me; but with such trait, what can we believe but that God is using these violent affections of tho body for the good of souls! Why aro wo to doubt W" The weekly conference of Protestant ministers and others interested to the work of revival con tinues to bo held in Belfast every Monday morn ing. The Belfast News Letter mates Oat on Friday and Saturday many were affected while at their work in warerooms and elsewhere, and had to leave for their homes. JEttsceltantau.e .
