Iltztooss—Their Use in War.—the reported
use of a balloon by the Emperor liiipoleen at the
battle of Bolferino is, by a majority of readers,
esteemed an innovation of his own. Ju.stioe
requires, however, that honor be bestowed where
honor is due. And this honor ie dna to no lees
a personage than Robeeplerre.
Balloons were first invented , by the brothers
Montgolfier, who made their firstexpertment on
the sth Juno, 1783, at Annocey, seposting..it
afterwards, on the 26th of Aughst v adParia,•in
the Champ de Mara. Their halluone were-called
Ihntynifie,e, in compliment to (lie Inventors.
They were made of a linen coversitned with pa
per, and contained only belted air, and not
hydrogen gas, which was subeequently intro
duced. The paper 'Altoona which are so mach
used on the Fourth of July by the patriotic citi
zens of America, as well as those which are
nightly Bent up Irons the Palace Garden In this
city, are, properly speaking, Ifontgotfierrs, and
not balloons. In October of the same year, Pri
nter de Boxier and thus Margins &Aristides were
the first adventurers bold enough to undertake to
&emend into the air in a banked attached to a
31ontyoUiere ; they rose to a height of three.
thousand feet, and descendol in safety to the
earth. Shortly after, the diatinguishedphiloeo
pher, Charles, substituted hydrogen gas for the
heated air, the former being fifteen times as light
as the latter. The first experiment on the Champ
de Mars produced a great ezoilen?ent among the
assembled multitude, as well as in the streets of
Paris. It was attended with Cutapley, success,
notwithstanding a violent shower, which to no
way appeared to interfere with its progress.
Wes, in his Dictionnuire de Physilue, thus con
cludes ids notice of the .rent: ..The satisfaction
was so great, that even elegantly dressed ladies
remained with their eyes intently fixed on the
balloon, regardless of the rain, which fell on
then, in t,rrenta."
In 179:1 the Committee of Public Safety, Ro.
bespierre presiding, established at the palace of
kleudon a company celled the /coffin: deroVat
fp, It consisted of fifty adventurous young
men, whose duty it was to makeiconstant exper
iments with their balloons, with a view to their
advantageoue employment in warfare. Their
proceedings were conducted with the strictest
eecrecy. Special balloons wore prepared for
each of the fourteen French armies then about
taking the field, and io eaoh balloon a distinct
name wen attached. But the balloons appear to
have been only once used to marked advantage
during the ware of the Republic. This Fos at
the battle of Flencus, on the 2rith of June, 1794,
whom the French General, Jourdan, defeated the
imperialists under Prince Coburg The name of
chi balloon was the Ent.iprencor (Enterprising)
Dupre's Lericegraphia. Nra!ogrca Gullies refers to
it as follows:
"An wrosaut and two officered rank ascend
ed in It twice, sod by their sigtioln. mode with
flags, contributed to the success - of the day, (or
rather successive Jaye,) which wan of the great
est consequence to the ltepublickfilir6lB. When
the labors of the Aerostatic Instityittion shall have
attained to a degree of general:utility and per
fection, the transaction, It has been said, will be
published; at prawns the Precuts know bat little
of what is doing. The greatest Improvement the
institution hat hitherto made has been to add a
kind of telegraph, falling below the gondola and
suspended from it, oonsisting of eight cylinders
of black taffeta, which form the eignals by open
ing and shutting, and appear like eo many pa
per lanterns. This simple apparatus forms two
hundred and siity-hve changes, and hoe been
found saffictent for the purposes of correspon
dence. The principal engineer hes had in con
templation the construction of a telegraphic bal
loon which might be worked on litre firma, by
menus of strings communicating with the cyl
inder before mentioned, at the height of twelve
feet from the ground."
Dupre's book was published about the year
1800.
The use of balloons for military reconnois
sance was not long continued. In 1812, the Rue•
shoe attempted to bring them again WO play
by directing a number of them over the Finch
army, and dropping upon their heads a number
of explosive projectiles. Bat the experiment
failed. The most complete treatise on this 'sub
ject is Tarawa's work, paiillahed in Path' in
1860, entitled, "Balloons, an Histoire de la Loco
motion Antietam depuis sou Origin. jusqu' a nos
✓ours."—N. Y. Post.
A New YeaEn Ammo—How dlr. Boric Got
on the Scotch Bench.—The Cleveland Herald of
Auguet 2, contains the following:
When in this city last week, Mr. Joseph
Horde visited, among other plu', the United
States Court room and emcee, with which he
expressed himself much pleased. The Court
room, he remarked, was larger and more elegant
then that in which Madeline Smith was tried
in Edinburg, two years ago, on a charge of poi
soning her lover—a trial which excited much
intermit in Europe and this country.
As the world knows, Mr. iloxie is a capital
story teller, and this he told at his own expense:
Anxious to nitrites the trial, and with Yankee
perseverance determining that he would, at
though told that success was hopeless, he pro
cured an order from some functionary for Wails-
Mon. Armed with this, he got as near the court
room as the crowd around wenld permit, and
sent in the missive by a policeman, but he not
returning, after waiting half an hour, a second
messenger was emit after the first, and he, too,
failed to report. Every ono knows Mr. Iloale
to be a modest, unpretending gentleman, but not
to be bodied in the pursuit of an object by trifles,
if a reasonable measure of sesarance and an in
domitable energy will surmount them.
Mr. Itoxie had held the post of Judge of one
of the 'subordinate Criminal Courts of the City
of New York, and, well knowing the potency of
armlet titles in Europe, borrowed pen and ink
in au adjacent shop, and indorsed a message on
his card eomethieg like this:
Mr. Justice Howie, of New York, presents hie
respects, and beg. to say that, having had aomo
experience in the administration of criminal
law at home, be would be glad of an opportu
nity to witness the trial of Mies Smith.
This card be contrived to get promptly deliv
ered (perhaps by the aid of Englieb gold,) and
as promptly appeared. an official, attired in a
black gown, and a long stave iu hand, bearing
an invitation from the Court to take a sest with
them. The procession of two started through
the crowd, the usher crying, "make way for
Justice Hullo," whose white locks, streaming
in the wind, gave unmistakable evidence of ju
dicial wisdom; and finallyi through a private
plumage, the judgment east was reached, and
the distinguished visitor found, himself aide by
Bide with the Lord Chief Justice and his two as
sociate Barons.
Whether hir. Justice Rorie was at all embar
rassed we are not adviiid, but that those who
know him beet would take a risk on him ea goon
as any man, under suoh.circamatances, there Is
tio'doubt. However, that Madeline Smith was
tried before. the New York Jaetice and three
Scotch 'Judgeg Is;
a tiled- fact, whatever the
record may elbow. The_prisoner was acqidtted
—on rather what !acme to us a curlew' proosse
in Scotiand—the trial se readied heeluee the
jury did' not condemn her, --although they did
cot in form acquit her. ,How far the opinions
on thepenerolent countenance of lbo venerable
and worthy New Yorker contributed to the end,
we are'unable to tell our readers."

only to trumpet forth their wrouge. The result
is, that mach is poured into the popular ear that
could otherwise only bo known to the elite.
The contradictions, too, elare every ono in the
