Acoidrht.—W. J. Hawks, Charleston,
Va , furnishes a thrilling aoooait of tlio late
horrible acoident on theSouthorttMichigan rail
road. Mr. Hawks, after ;Stalin{ that ho was
a passenger, and that ho was sifept forty yards
down the stream from where the train was pre
cipitated Into it, says;
"On reaching tho eboro 1 stumbled > over a
man—turned and found him alive—l asked him
Mb name, tie replied, * Walworth.’ I could
not raise him, and went to the can for assistance,
'passing ten or twelve dead bodies on tho beach.
Arming at the wreck, 1 found some one had
'dead. He was a Itrgßyduje-lookiflg old gentle
mao. 1 afterwards aisisledliw ’■SotrinLiS last
moments. -
"The first thing that arrested my attention on
entering the car that 1 bad left vos-that I was
standing on a pile of dead bodies. One man 1
thought olive aod gazinginlo my face. I turned
the lamp around, and the glazed eye of death
told me that all was over. A lady .had her ora
clasped around his neck, with a frightful wound
in her head, her feet caught and crashed in the
wheels of the car. At .their feetleya beautiful
boy with his bead severed from bio body as close
as it could have been done by the galltollor.
Some were just in the pahgs of death. Others,
caught and crushed by the falling Umbers, begged
me to kill them and put them out.of their mise
ry. Thero was a lady; going to /meet her bus
banJ, with her daugher six years old, and a
babe at tho breast. Tho mother odd little girl
were killed. The mother had clasped the babe
to such a manner that it was unhurt.
"The ground was etrewed with beads, arms, •
legs and dead bodies. I saw several with their
backs.broken and their lower limbs paralyzed, i
writhing in the sand. Borne df them woald i
clutch me, as 1 passed, with a grasp from whioh i
it was almost impossible lo free myself. Several l
.bcautifal boys aod girls wero lakto from the i

were crushed between the wheels, with their
faces and hands upturned in a supplicating min

her children. She was crying, *oh! my dear 1
family I oh! my six children.’ Both of her legs j
were crushed off below the kneo. Sho lived ten 1
or fifteen minutes. ! afterwards assisted ia 1
taking two of her children from the wreck dead. 1
Two more tiao boys of hers were found—cue I 1
with Lis leg cut off; the ClhcT hod lost an aria, 1
and both were living when I left '* I
A Pa&is letter writer says: !
••The Austrian army, officers mod soldiers 1
alike, are mercilessly ridiculed. _|*<>or Guylia has j
coma in, I think, for vastly more (ban UU share '
of sarcasm. In one picture i have seen be is
represented witb a ferocious looking moustache,
tho two ends of which are at. least a foot in
length, while a sort of pointed with a
feather Iff'!!, ia pmbed-jost-tfpofobwwpPW'Wf H

pretended portrait upside down, aod you will ‘
find before yon an exact representation of an
att s head, of which tho loog moosJacbe-eoda
form the ears/ aod the little cap the muzzle,
while tho feather is metamorphosed into a very
becoming wisp of straw! In another caricature, ,
which originally appeared in The Charivari, but
is now for sale in all the prinl-ehopf, Qnylia is
represented as holding a confab with the God
dess of Victory, who very pertinently says:
‘My good Sir, you have a great deal of impu
dence to be talking of mo ia your dispatches!
I don't know you, General! I,never heard of
you!' Id still another, the late Austrian Com
mander-In-Chief is seen impressing his impor
tance on a French foot soldier, taken prisoner.
'That U tho Austrian standard!' aaysGaylai,
pompously. ‘Look at it, so that you may know
it again.’ ‘Oh!’ says the soldier, ‘1 know it very
well already. I’ve seen plenty like it hanging
up in the chapel of the Invalides at Paris!'
"Ono caricature shows a admlriogly
pattiog ibo top of a cannon, while ho apostro
phizes the weapon, something after ibis fashion:
‘What! Wo have been having another Httlo chat
with the Austrians, eh? llow talkative you
are?’ _
"The incident of driving the Austrians Into
the canal at Paleetro is also wittily carica
tured. A Zouave is cccn bayonetliogan Austrian
in tho water, saying to him at the same lime:
'When the gentleman is ready lo leave his bath,
and wanls his towels, all ho has to do is to ring
the bell!’”

some particulars from tho version we gave lost

r J lt. Editor:— The notice in yonr paper of the
7th tost., of the shooting affray in Pataaki,
Lawrenco Co., Pa., on the 4th, la incorrect in
eomo respects. It seems that an old grudge ex
isted between James hosteller and Jacob Ger
-hort, which tho former, determined to odjast by
physical means. The tatter, declining the some,
started homeward. He was panned by tho for
mer, and qverlakcn when a short distance from
town. Gerhart then declared that if any one
would lay hands oa him, bo woald shoot him.
Hosteller, regardless of his threats, attacked
him, Gerhart endeavored to make use of a re
volver. Francis MoCord was present, although
taking aides with neither; but, seeing tbo life
of Hostetler in jeoprady, and wishing to see no
font play, attempted to prevent Gerhart from
making use of the deadly weapon, and la the
attempt was shot by him. The ball penetrated
bis thigh in Juxtaposition to the abdomen. Ger
hart then placed the pistol to tho head of Lostet
ter end again fired. The ball passed in direotly
above the eye brow, and lodged abova the ear.
The condition of both men was at first consider
ed extremely dangerous, bat it is now thought
that they will recover. —Mahoning Regis.

The Mablsthoh Verified.—Of lata years,
even the existence of the Maelstrom on the coast
of Norway has been doubted. The ancient ac
counts of Us terrible power were doubtless fabu
lous, but M. fingertip, Minister of the Norwe
gian Marine, has recently given a reliable ac
count of it, in reply to some questions from a
correspondent of the Boston Recorder. The vaet
whirl is caused by the setting In and out of tho
tides between Lofoden and Mosken, and ib
most violent half way between ebb and flood
tide. At flood and ebb lido 'it disappears for
about half an hour, and begins again 1 with the
moving of the waters. Largo vessels may pass
over it safely in sereno wcaiber, but in a storm
it is perilous to the largest draft. Small boats
are not safe near it at the iimo of its strongest
action in any weather. The whirls in the Mael
strom do not, as whs once supposed, draw ves
sels under the water, bat by their violence they
fill them with wateror dash them upon tho neigh
boring shoals. M. Hsgenip says:
"In Winter, it not unfrcqucntly happens that,
at sea, a bank of clouds shows* west storm, with'
heavy sea, to be prevailing there, while further
in on the coast, the elearair shows that on the
inside of the Wcal-jjoird' (east slde of Lofoden)
the wind blows from theland, and'setB outthroagh
thefjord from the east. In such cases,' especi
ally, an approach’to-the Maelstrom la in the
highest degree dangerous-,' for the ‘stream and
under-current from - opposite ° directions work
there together to make the whole passage‘one
elagle boiling cauldron: At such-times appear
the mighty whirls which have given it the name
of,Maelstrom (that Is, the whirling or grinding
stream,) and in which no'craft whatever, can
bold Us course. For a steamer, it is, then, qulio
inadvisable to attempt the passage of tho Mael
strom during a Winter storm, and for a sailing
vessel it may also be bad enobgh in time of Sum
mer, should there fall a 'calm'or a light wind,
whereby the power of the stream becomes greater
than that of tho wind, leaving (he vessel no long
er under command.”' -
