“Peachiera, Bitaated ala placeghcre lie Mlo
cio learea Lake Garda, is important inaeomoh as
U commands the lake, as well as the road from
Brescia to Verona, and holds the floodgates by
which ihe water of the Mlncio may be increased
or diminished at pleasure. It is a place of the
second class, whose fortifications were augmen
ted after 1846. At that time it capitnlatod after
aeiegoofone monlfi, directed by the late Duke
of Genoa, brother of the present King of Sar
dinia.
“Manlno is a place of the first class, and was
generally considered the key of Northern Italy,
until Verona acquired its present political and
military importance. It is easily approached,
by reason of Us situation in the midst of three
lakes and of marshes formed by the waters of
tho Mincio, whose lower extremity It guards. It
communicates with terra firiha by fire causeways:
those of Borerbello, Legnano, Modena, BeiW
forte and Cwmona. • Thcso ‘caußewayß are for
tified, and the citadel of La which de
! fends tho Rovorbollo road, is protected .against
surprise by an artificial innndftUon worked by
bydraulle machines. In 1848 the Aaelriaoe re
sorted to this means of defence against (be Pied
montese. They had then, and still have, on the
upper lako, a doliib which renders important
service. Tho very fact of the isolation of Man
tua, communloatiug with terra firma only by the
fivo oauseways wo have designated, uhowa that it
Is easy to t blockado it. For this purpose, it is
only necessary to master, by means of works,
the outlets of these fire communications. 80)
contrary to tho usual praoljhe,, the besieging
corps may be inferior to the garrison. Ia 1796
Serrarier, with 8,000 men, kept In thero a force
at least double.
“Beyond the main fortifications, Mantua has
also two entrenched camps, and'fibally at the
south of the city is a vast oxtem of marshy but
very fertile land, surrounded on all sides by the
waters of the Mlncio, tho‘Po and the Auaona,
and called the Soroglio. It is tbe Oompagoa of
Mantua, and it makes, to a certain extent, part
of tho plaoe, which derives from it great resour
ces. Tbe village of Borgo Forts and', Goirernolo
give poaaeebioa of tbe Soraglio. Iq 1848Gover
oolo was the scene of a brilliant affair, which
Mat the enemy COO killed and 400 prisoners, and >
made the Piedmontese masters or the Soroglio.
“Legnano has a g6od bridge bead on tho Adige,
of which it defends the I<»w<r part, wbioh is
further proicoicd by the artificial ioudatiou of
the Molinella. Kray employed this means
against Scherer in 1790.

ia city, forming' a vast cntrenchdir
camp ofaDOQt six kilometres, having the form of
a semi circlu, the two extremities of wbioh join
tbe Adigo at Chtevo and Tombctla. it was
against thesa heights that tbe Sardinian army
daebed on the Cih of May, 1848. It hoped to
carry them and then lo induce a rising in Vero
na. But after a brisk affair at Santa Lucia, tbe
battle remaining undecided, Charles Albert re
tired to hia former positions. Verona, besides
its politioal importance (for since tbe evacuation
of Milan it is the eontre of Ihe Austrian govern
ment in Italy,) has also immense strategic im
portance. It holds the roada of the Frioul and
the Tyrol, and the highest military considera
tions are attached to Its possession, as the'prin
cipal defence of the line of the Adige. This
river, whose course is parallel to that of (be Min*
oio, forms the second obstacle to an army after
' it has crossed tbe latter river. It is very rapid
7 Until near Magnano, where itß banks become
lower, and tbe crossing becomes easy from this
point to Carpi, except to occupy or blockade
Legnano.
“At the north, BoMolengo, on tbe right bank
is also a position favorable for an attempt to
eross the river. It was thero that Braoe effeo- 1
ted his passage in 1800; but in 1848, after the
; glorious combat of Paslrengo, tbe Piedmontese
• confined themselves to occupying Buaeoleago,
! without attempting to cross North of Verona
are Itivoli and Corona, so celebrated In our wan
of the revolution, and which were. In 1848, tbe
\ scene of many combats, especially that of July
i 22d, so glorious for Piedmont. Theso ore the
: advanced posts of Verona, wbioh connect it for
Iha defeooe of tho Adige, with those of Rovcrcdo
and Trento, and with the Italian Tyrol, whichis
a natural appendage of tbe quadrangle.
I “Wo have thusetrosed, without any disguise,
I the strength of this line, which is so important
, that the military fate of Italy rests there. The
Minoio and the Adige once crossed, tbe four for
-1 tresses token or blockaded, there is an end of
Austrian domination on this sido of tbe Alps.
Perils or ms Niairr.—-The Prof.. in one of

“Just keep yonr earebpen aoy time after mid*
eight when you are lying in bod in a JonVaUio
of a dark night. What horrid, strange, sag*
gestire unaccountable noises you will hear!
The stillness of night Is a vulgar error. All the
dead things seem to be alive. Crack! That is
the old chest of drawers; you never hear it craok
in the day lime. Creak! There's a door ajar;
you know yon shut them all. Where con, that
latch be that rattles so ? Is aoybody trying it
softly* or, worse than any body, is——r
(Cold shiver.) Then a sudden gust that jars
all lh%windowe—very strange! there does uot
seem to be auy wind about that it belongs to.
When it stops, you bear the worm boring in the;
powdery beams overhead. Then steps outside,;
a stray animal, no doubt. AU right, but agen
tie moisture breaks out all over yon; and then
something like a whistle or a cry, another gust
of wind, perhaps; that accounts for the rustliog
that just made your heart roll ovsrand tumble
about, so that it felt more like a live rat under
your riba tbap a part of your own body; then a
crash of something that has fallen, blown over
very like rater Wester, qui ain eailit! for
you are damp and oold, and sitting bolt upright,

PITTSBURGH,
Azm-Snavaar in Noeth Carolisa.—A North
Carolina correspondent writes to the Evening
Post, as follows: John A. Gilmer, of the Fifth
Distriot of North Carolina, is a oandidate for
re-election, and opposed by the other candidates,
one Whig and ooe Democrat. Hie vole with the
Black Republicans 0° the Lecomptou Constitu
tion while in Congress, has given offence, but
there are a largo nutubsr of persons in the dis
trict who sympathize with him in his viewaon
the slavery queollon, and predict' for him that,
like Letcher, he will be elected, though by a re
duced majority. Virginia has shown that the
slave power is on the wane there; and the Fifth
District of NorthCsrolina will show, by the elec

of North Carolina are np and doiog in the old
