with otkr rapid working harvesters, all tho

/.soon os thesapiuthe grainduappears, though
tho berry isstiliquite softj it willdo to cut—
; The general ruleis tocut as’soon as. the red
dish color oftheearhas disappeared. - When
fully ripe, the: cut bends down to the straw,
. ana is apt- to break off in subsequent opera
tions, causing much loss: Still, lor molting
purposes, barley cut when fully ripe is prefer
red. The same is trueof wheat when used for
. seed;—it shquld be allowed to grow till quite
:.\ripo. It ia hotter, to. run the risk of a little
v, lose than out too early.
Oats'ore generally cut when rather .green.
Ondho whole, taking into consideration the in
creased Value of the straw as todder, this is a
good' plan; though to obtain tho best sample of
oats, it is advisablo to let them get fully ripe,
even till a'few ol the lowest berries in the car
shell out.
'Binding is too often done carelessly. It is
hard and unpleasant work, and, ia performed in
a hurried manner. To bind welland rapidly,
. requires & skillful hand and considerable prac
tice, Some, binders leave more wheat on the
:groundthan would pay the wages of better
men,' and their' sheaves so often tumble to
pieces aa greatly to impede the future opera
tions of unloading, and threshing.
The sheaves should not be too large, as the
straw is longer in curing. We haveseen wheat
'bound too tight—so tight that the straw under
the band remained, damp for several days after
loosely bound sheaves were quito fit to stock.
But it is not often that an error is committed
in this direction.
--Shocking should bo performed with care.
How often do yon sec half tho shocks blown
down^involving much unnecessary labor, and,
in unsettled -weather, much loss. Such u har
vest as 1855 should teach us to ho more care
ful in this respect Wheat properly shocked,
with two sheaves placed ou the top, with the
ears downward, as is common in England,
passed through the wet weather comparative
ly uninjured; while other wheat, carelessly
shocked, was one-half sprouted.
Barley is sometimes bound up like wheat;
and many good fanners think this the best as
it certainly the neatest plan. When mowed
by hand, it should he tamed in. the swaths, if
necessary, and then put up into cocks and the
land raked by hand.
The same is true of oats, except that they are
more easily bound op; and tho practice is
much more general than with barley.
Pitching and Loading are among the plea
santest of harvest labors. We like to see the
work performed with energy and spirit; but
in this cose, as in many others, the old adage,
11 the more haste tho less speed/* is verified.
The loader should he careful to lay the sheaves
so that they will ride safely home. un
pleasant and unprofitable to have a load upset;
and when the sheaf tumbles off and is driven
over by the returning wagon, it dampens
somewhat our enthusiastic admiration of
“Young America/' The pitcher should always
throw me sheaves- with the ears toward the
loader; and he, if he pitches off bis own load,*
will soon learn to place them in regular order,
- and to keep the middle ofthe load well up.
Stacking should bo done by an experienced
hand. Tosuch, any hints we might give will
be unnecessary/ To build a stack that will
shed rain, is quite on art. As the top is ap
proached, the middle of the stack should be
kept fall; and in making the roof, the outside
should, bogradually, louver than the center at
.xach successive layer. With a little straw or
loose grain to top -off 'with, such a stack will
not be materially, damaged by the ordinary
showers till it can be threshed. But most far
mers in this section have sufficient bam room
to hold their wheat; and in this else, nothing
more is required than to stow away tho sheaves
as compactly as possible. There is, however,
great difference in this respect. Some per
sons will put half qs much again wheat into a
mow as others.
