TheCadsb of tiib South Rehd Tbaokdt.—
The Chicago Timet pabligheo a ietter from South
Bend, Indians, in which it is elated that, when
the fatal culvert wsa constructed on the Michi
goo Southern Road at that place, Mr. Henry
Benslow, who owns the land at that point, and
Mr. Aaron Webslur, a prominent citizen of tho
viointly, warned tho engineer that ho was not
making provision fortho woloreof a flood. They
remembered, and reminded the engineer, that
In a fredhet in 1810, when there was but a sim
ple rivulet there, the heavy rains caused it to
"Cut st that point a guloh twenty feet deep. The
.long ehed of hills, six miles in extent, tho sur
plus waters from which must pus thftt ravine,
was pointed out to show the reason why, in
dasbiog rains, the insignificant stream became a
turbulent and destructive torrout. Soienoo tri
umphed, however, over the common sense df the
farmers. And heuco tho wofal tragedy, in
-which more than a hundred persons were mas
sacred outright or horribly mangled. The Utile
stream for which a culvert len feet wide by nix
feet high was provided, became, after a violent
summer rain storm, a powerful stream, bearing
‘down from its 6ix miles of hills the usual drift.
.Somo unlucky tree or log caught on the culvert,
and presently it was choked up. The cater no
cumulated fast, and the thirty feel high sandy
embankment was soon but a wall of almost liquid
mud. - The train had been run with great cau
tion uver the part of (be road, whiob in the dark
ness and storm was thought dangerous. It was
believed by thoso running it that the worst, was
over. Tho train ran upon the trap at tho rate of
at least twenty miles aa hour, ami iis shook
causing the flood to burst tho flimsy barrier
presented by the saturated embankment of sand,,
the Iralo, with all its precious freight of human
life, took the dreadful leap in the dark, which
baa sent-horror and mourning throughout (he
land.— Cin. Con.
Wr are glad to observe that the country pa
per* are paying much attention to the condition
of (ho crops in their respective localities, and
noting with partioulority the progress of ibe
farmers. And it is doubly gratifying that we
have not only news from thb country' through
our exchanges printed in the smallest towns, hut
good nows. Tho reports from the harvest fields
through Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky, are full
of encouragement. The almost, universal state
ment regarding ihe wheat crop, ia that it in boi
ler than has been kuown for many yearn Some
say that a greater breadth of land was sown than
ever before, and that such weight Of heads aud
plumpness of berry was never seen. We hear
very little of tho Uu frost, or of rust, or ibe
fly, or any of tho destructlvea of thegraiu of tbs
staff of life. Harvest time, and all is well! is
the harden of (he joyoas acclamations that reach
us from all quarters. We may be exceedingly
glad, for the land is full of aorn. Tbs maize—
short for “Indian Corn," the true com of our
Talleys of Egyptian riohuesa—is growing tall and
beautiful, and is fall of lasty life. The month
of Jane, with the exccpti&o ef was
glorious for the corn. The lost fortnight bos
brought it ont wonderfully. In places its growth
was visible to the naked eye, or come very en
thusiastic persons were deceived.—Cin. Can
Black Soldisbs —The French boast that some
of their GereeatanJ most terrible troops were the
Tarcos, as blank as a coal, natives of North Af
rica, mon whose fierce passions monut up 10
perfect frenzy in moment of s charge, ami who,
officered by Froncbmon of judgment to guide ami
direct their tremendous energies, do all that men
can do on (be field of battle, and seem rather
like tigers in the impetuosity of their attacks.
The French have no doubt learned, iudeeJ, a
■useful lesson in the art of war from the Arab
troops with whiob they hate been brought in con
tact on the coast of Tho suddenness,
swiftness and whirlwind chancier of attack,
sweeping all before K, palsying all resistance,
and trampling in tbedoslall opposition; this sort
of attack has been brought to a degree of per
fection by the Zouaves and the Turoos from a
bard earned experience of its lerrinlcocss on the
plains of Africa. Something of this kind, in
deed, is and indeed tho only kind of forco
ihal can operate to advantage in breaking a lino
of soldiers veil supplied vlth the new guns of
long range now in use. The ropidity with which
they cover the ground, tho Irregularity of (heir
attack, faeoinating and so disarming for the mo
ment an enemy, renders modern warfaro, no less
than the old modes of fighting, a hand to hand
encounter.

says he had a good laugh over the following an
ecdote told by a gentleman on board at the ex
pense of an old Condnolor on the Erie Road:
Several years ago, when G«o. Goff “ran the Roy
al Mail Train" between Hornellsrille and Dun
kirk, Smith wot one day seated in a passenger
coach of that train, then stopping for a few
minutes at Genesee station. An old lady, lead
ing a little ehild, entered the car, and her wild
excited look convinced him that this was her first
venture upon a railroad. Presently the train
started, and Geo. Goff, stepping into tho car, in
his usual prompt and business style, uttered the
word “Tiokels." The old lady kopt her eye on
George, closely watching.eTery movement. At
length he stood beside her. “Tickets, madam,"
said tho Conductor. “You shan't have my ticket,”
said the old lady, convulsively olaUhing tho
piecß of pasto-board. “ I most insist upon see
ing yonr tioket, madam," was the polite bnt firm
reply. The old lady slipped one corner through
her hand, whieb George seized, and adroitly
transferred the ticket into his possession—exam
ined it—found it woa for Scio, three miles and a
half distant* tore off one corner, as was then the
custom, placed it in his pocket and passed on.
The old lady gazed after him in astonishment
until he left the car. Granny," said the liule
child, “what did he do that for-?' ’ The reply
came emphatically and solemnly, “Ho'&drnnk. 1 ’

Great Bear Fiort between one old Bsab,
Three Cubs, Ttoo Little Boys and a Dog. —A sub
scriber, writing to us from North Twin Dam,
Juno 3d, thus tells of a beat fight that took
place on (he farm of fColocel Thomas Fowler, on
the 30th May: One of the boys was sent to drive
the cowb borne, which were about one hundred
rods from the house, at tho edge of the woods,
where he saw an old bear and her two cubs; he
hallooed to his eldcrbrother, eome fourteen years
of age, to como to him with a pistol; he brought
one of RamsdeU'e ten-inch pistols, as the other
had a gun loaded with shot otjly. John, for that
was his name, flrod tho pistol at tho bear’s bead,
and she then went ap a tree where her onbs
were. Tho old boar lamed to come down and
give battle; the boys then fired again, and the
bear came down and took after the boys. John
took tho gun from (boothor boy and mauled her
over the head until ho bent it badly, and the dog
made such inroads upon her right flank at the
some time, that the was forced to give battle to
him, tho dog, which enabled the boys to put an
end to the bear. They, then killed tho two cubs,
and went home with one lire one to their moth
er, (being the only person in the house,} with
as much honor of victory ns Generals Scott or
