To aid our readers In fanning a correct idea
of the battle of Magenta,. width will be talked of
thought of, and written of longer than any of us
will lire, as the first collision on a grand scale
of the armies of Franceiteld , Austria, in the war
whose uproar is now:fillingthe world, we have
prepared a simple diagram in which the princi
pal localities of the country surrounding the
field of battle are represented. For the country
itsielf, its fences and ditcher; its rioo fields and
wheat fields, cud vineyards and mulberry trees,
and its picturesque cities; and for pictures atilt
splendors and terrors of war, we must refer to
the abundant correepondetice from the scene of
hostilities, of which a liberal quantity hes ap
peared in oar columns; and for the general geog
raphy of the Seat of War we refer to any of the
cheap maps, which are plenty as newspapers.
Bat here is our diagram, by the assistance of
which we hope with few words to make the bat
tle of Magenta clearly intelligible.

g—ilunt from Novara to Mil.
On the second of Juno, the Austrian army
massed shoat Vigevatio, (8,) a town between the
rivers lania and Ticino, learned, to their great
euprise, that the French Emperor had by a
flank march reached Novara, (1,) and further,
had thrown three bridges across the Ticino at
Turbigo, ('_'.) The Austrians Ineir at once that
(heir enemies, instead of attacking Placentaand
Davits, from Alemandriaokirti on the high road
to Milan., They, burried owe the Ticino and
(5,) acrosa She Milan road at Niarania, (.'...) An .
Austrian Division was also Ontown in all haste
towards Turbigo. Gen. McMahon, with his
corps, followed by the whole Sardinian army,
were ordered to cross the Ticino at Turbig'o,
where the Allies held possession of (be bridges,
and advance down the river on am lett or Aus
trian aide, to force the passage for the main
body at Boffalora. Napoleon, with the Imperial
Guard, on the morning of the 4th, look a pool
ties near the Bantam bridge, and bearing Me.
Mahon'a corps engaged with the Austrians on
the eastern bank of the river, according to pro
gramme, carried the bridge, which is, of course,
in our diagram, the place here the lines cross,
and entered Sardinian Lombardy. Tho sounder
battle in the direction of Mohlshon's advance
now ceased, and the Emperor was perplexed to
know what was the matter; and as Canrobert,
who was to support the Guard was delayed, the
condition of the Guards and Emperor at Buffe
ters became exceedingly critical. At this time
Canrobert', corps was struggling with great diffi
culty along the road from Nome to Buffeters.
The King of Sardinia and his army had ales met
with many emberrasemente, and were, with the
exception of et single division, far behind Mc-
Mahon in the passage of the river at Turbigo,
and were unable to come into action in time to
share the glory of the battle. ?donation endeav
ored to advance in two columns, one proceeding
directly down the river, the other advancing to
ward Magenta. But be foUnd the Austrians in
such force that they were about to separate those
columns by their masses, and fell back in order
to reunite them; and then, instead of proceeding
down the river to Buffeters, he moved on to Ma
genta; and arriving there opportunely, struck
the great blow ofthe day. it was hie retrograde
movement for the eske of strengthening his col
umns that caused the cessation of firing that the
Emperor could not understand, and the final
march upon Magenta instead of Buffelora that
occasioned still further delay. The Emperor and
hie guards therefore, instead of being immedi
ately supported by McMahon marching down
the river on the Austrian tilde, and the main
body of the army under Canrobert, coming up
on the line of general advance, was left to con
tend with the moans of the Austrian grand army
at the Buffatora bridge head, for four hours..
Here however, the narrowness of the roads had
impedml the advance of Canrobert, prevented
the Austrians from using their superior numbers
with effect. At length McMahon charged Ma
genta with irreeistable impetuosity, and Caere
bort brought hie mime into action and opened
upon the Austrians with forty pieces of the
French rifled artillery planted on the Railway
embankment. The battle lasted until after eight
o'clock at night, when the Austrians withdrew
with decidedly the worst of it, falling back upon
Abbiate Grasso, (5,) leaving the road to Milan
(G,) open. The evacuation of Milan and flight
from Pavia (7,) followed, and the last we heard
of the Austrians, they were beaten at Malognano
(9,) and continuing their retreat as if anxious
for the shelter of their prodigious fortresses, en
and near the blineio, or at billet to place the

A WITIIZILUNI APPIAL TO Drat lIRS IN STRONG
Deuce.—The following eloquent appeal is from
the pen of the Rev. Alexander Duncanson:
"Dealer, in Drink!—Tours is a melancholy
position—a more pitiful, more unworthy, more
degraded, and more sinful position, cannot be
conceived ! To prey upon the shame, the crime
the body, the soul, the limo, the eternity of a
fellow creature, is awful ! To prepare the way
of bankruptcy, pauperism, disease' prison, death
is not to be coveted ! To assist to ruin charac
ter, murder reputation, oink position and air
cumetancea,filch a man's (numbs of bread, is
odious ! To beggar families, break the hearts
of wives, ecaiter domestic firebrands and death,
break up happy homes, divido united hearts, dis
solve family links of the closest tics, is a base
ness indescribable. To rise into riuhes by such
a course is not to be rich ; to be honored is to be
dishonored; to gain place in the world is to have
no dignity; to stand forth in the cause of religion
Is to daub Zion's walls with untempered mortar.
To swell out Into portly dimensioses by the sale
of strong drink is the price of poverty; to rise
into luxury is a gain from wretchedness; to walk
abroad in ease is a purchase from perspiration
and toil; to assume high•airs, and gad about
all bespangled and bejeweled, is an elevation
wrung from shame, degradation, misery, and
death. How infatua ted must the drinker be to be
rolling in every comfort and luxury, possessing
wealth and property, and all purchased at the
poor inebriate's expense. The publican well
clothed, while he is in rags; the publican's wife,
handsome, baguni, jeweled, but the poor drunk
ard's not where to lay her head; the publican's
children, clothed, fed, educated, head and feet
' preserved from the inclement:des of the season ;
but marl hie customers, cold starved, ragged,
wet, diseseed. 4 ! What a difference between the
elate at those that are stipported by strong

drunkard'a mind, the eke& we have jest given

would banish forever the drinker from the drunk
cry door.
"And what state can that mind be in that can
keep such a house? How destitute of all the
finer feelings of humanity—to speak of religion
would be nonsense. Where is love for his coun
try and his kind ? Can patriotism inhabit such
a bosom 1 Impossible. Can ench a man bet
reformer—a regenerator of society—and keep a
house and sell an article to degrade, dehuman
ize, and enslave his fellow man, soul and body,
hand and fool? Incredible. How much of
Christ's love can be In the bosom of the man
who continues to sell spirits, and sees, and hears
and reads, the awful deeds it is doing against
God and man? Not a spark.
"And is it possible that the spirit dealer can
commend his traffic to God in prayer? Could he
lay his hand on his heart, and enter the divine
presence, and crave God to bless his efforts? It
cannot be. His blood would run cool, his soul
would freeze in the endeavor, his smitten con
science could not bear the piercing glance of
God ; be can only carry on his trade by forget
ting eternity, trampling on the sacred dictates
of conscience, and escaping from thoughts of
future death and judgment. Infinitely better
for a man to beg . his bread from door to door,
than occupy such a position. In this case be
might be an heir of heaven—but who can rec
ognizE the selling whisky and eternal glory ?"

Ile has in consequence given np his design of

that he feels interested in having settled, whother
