I MIIo.•rAtTINGITOINI AID Ise.—A new book by Mrs. I'artingtoa is one of the most agreeable lit -1 erary announcements which we can make to the thousands who have laughed and grown fat over Y her unique sayings. The old lady has been sometime preparing a volume, which she hoe christened "Knitting work; a Web of many Tel tures," and in a few wecke Mews. Brown, Tag gart! te Chase, the fortunate publialters, will is vac it in a very attractive form. It will he hand somely Illustrated by !hippie, who has caught the spirit of the work, and represented both hire. Partington and Ike in many of their peculiari ties, with nrinenal felicity. Though differing eomewhat from Mr. Shinn ber's previous volume, published some five years ago, nod of which :10,001) copies were sold, ityet abounds in quaint and grcilesque l'araingtonion rayiogs, floe poems, and suggestive essays. The opening chapter on the:choosing ofa "tluardion for Ike," in running over with fun and philoso phy. The greater part of the book is original, while scattered here and there through Ito pages may be found selections from the author's recent contributions to the Gazette, of which he is one of the editors. At the risk of being charged with tolling , , talon out of school, we venture to sublieity to the following conversation about the volume, between tho demo and a pry ing neighbor, who is perhaps a little jealous of our friend's success. "So you are coming before 'the public again," esid the inqusitor, looking into Mre. Parting ton's little low windciw, at which the dame was knitting. She pocultied his words a moment be fore replying. "I am not a publican," she said at length; " and though heaven knows we are none of us not too good, the publicans are beat., and that's gannet truth." " I mean," said the pietist, "that you have a new work on the car pet." "Not on the carpet, exact ly," replied she, •• but something that's cognac to it—knitting work " "Crewel!" he persisted in inquiring. "No," was the response; "(hero isn't nothing cruel in it; like a satyr, to wrangle like a barbed arrow: it will he pleasant to take, like a lucubra tion for a parched tongue, and will make people happy. TEM LRANINO Townn or Plati.—A correspon dent of the Baltimore A eu.ruon, writing of the - Leaning Tower of Pisa, says As soon as the procession had passed, wedrove on to the Cathedral, where wo spent a half hour in viewing its flue paintings, statuary, mosaics, monuments, and marbles. It is 311 feel lung, and the length of the transept 237 feet. This immense structure was consecrated 1;00 years ago, but like moat of the buildings in Italy it bears but little marks of ago or decay. This to gether with the Baptistry, Campanile, or Lean ing Tower, and the Campo Santo, are sure to se cure a few hours etoppago at Pisa front every traveler paesing between Leghorn and Florence. The Leaning tower is a belfry adjainiug the Cathedral, 170 feet high, comprising eight tiers of stories, each supported on the outside by marble columns, forming open galleries around the tower, whilst the lower walls of the interior are about seven foot thick. The tower overhangs the perpendicular about thirteen feet, which hoe doubtless arisen from a defect in the foundation, though it having been built 700 years ago, no record exists of the foot. It appears from the outside to the stranger to be in a state of uncer tainty whether it should stand or fall. We as cended its :330 steps to its lop, and had a fine view of thesurrounding country. On the sum mit are seven bells, so arranged that the heavier metal is on the tide which counteracts the loan ing of the tower. These bells, of which the largest weighs 12,000 pounds, are remarkable for the eweetuess of their sound, though the FO norous clangor of ono of them whilst we were ou the tower was rattinr morn than wc, had bar gained for. PAN (Puri ) Albrcht Wad A Ilr Ile[ tuan make Olomentl. Tun MassACHUSETTS AntIMMENT —While all the Know-Nothing, and the larger portion of the Democratic papers in different sections of the I country are . striving to make the Republican party alone responsible for the odious amend ' ment to the Constitution of Massachusetts, it in rofreithing toms that apart of the latter press is disposed to "put the noddle on the right horse," by stating exactly where the responsibility rests. Of this class is the Boston Pilot, well known an one of the most influential organs in the Eastern Stales. It shows conclusively, by facts and fig iras, that tho Know Scallop and Democrats of Alastmehuselts are accountable for the amend ment, notwithstanding the declarations to the contrary. Speaking of the position of the Re publicans the Pilot says "The Republicans were by no means unani mous in their support of the amendment. In the county of Worcester—the strongest Republioan county in the State—a county which usually gives a majority of flee thousand fur the Repub lican ticket—the vote was nearly oven. Several Republican papers opposed it, and it is quite clear the Democrats could have defeated the amendment without draining themselves much, if they had desired to do so." Lr 10 now ascertained that the Emporor of Anatria reached Milan just in limo to loaro the defeat of biz army, and to assist ia the evacua tion of Milan. That wee not theentartaiument to which he invited himself. Tns Caors.—ln conversing with friend; from different parts of the county, we are gratified to find the majority of them more cheerful, and speaking less despondingly of the prospects of the coming harvest than they did a week or ten days ago. From all the information we have thus been able to gather, we have learned noth ing calculated to induce as to alter the opinion we expressed last week, that we should yet be able to reap half a crop of fall grain in this corm ty.—Brarrr Argrfc A good many of our farmers were in town last week, and the general topic of conversation, on the streets and in the hotels, was in regard to the late frost and 'its effects upon the crops. The opinion of many as to the extent of injury done, is that the wheat crop will not Iw less than half the usual yield; if so small as that. —Grerst Rrrth. We find our farmers in the county cheering op within the last week. Although the indi• vidual losses are in some instances very severe, yet closer examinations have discovered many patches and oven entire fields of grain, previous ly supposed to be destroyed, promising a fair yield. In numerous instances the grain fields of whole (arms have not been touched. It is found, too, that the frail. is not by any means so badly damaged as was thought 'in the first instance. We will unquestionably have plenty of apples in Washington comity this Beason; and if the weather hereafter is favorable, a rea sonable crop of corn and potatoes, and, with the buckwheat that will be raised, more than enough wheat to broad us.— Wash.
