Pita Hattie or Palestro.
tilotrmpoodone e of the London Herald
Touts, June 2,—As soon as the Austrians
had evacuated Vercelli, King Victor Emanuel
moved up, with the bulk of the Piedmontese
forum, 'from Oanimiano anti the other positions
they held south of the Po. Oa Monday the bulk
of the Piedmont-ese army, about 80,000 men,
were concentrated around the town. At day
break the King rode out of the town, with his
staff, to attack the advanced guard of the Atm
trians. The advanced gutird of the right wing
had taken up strong positions al Palestro, Vin
zaglio and Camillo°. Strang delaohmente were
also pouted at Confienze. The object of the at
tack of the Piedruontese on Mondayeeems
to
have been to drive the Austrians out of those po
sitions which were held (I am informed) by the
corps d'arctre of General Sobel. The King had
formed his troops in three corps, the brigade of
the guards and the Aosta brigade formed the
main column, under the orders of the King and
Gen. Cialdini, which proceeded along the road to
Palestro. Gen. Fanti attacked Vinzaglio, and
Gen. Durauths marched by the way of (Walloo n
a circuitous route, eo tut to outflank the enemy,
and was ordered to join the King at Palestro
alter having carried the Austrian lines. The
Piedmontese brigades were supplied with artil
lery, but their practice is said to be very bed,
although the coolness of the men under bre Is
said to be admirable. The plan was punctually
carried out. Palestro, Vinzaglio, and Casalino,
were simultaneously attacked, and after some
fighting the' Austrians evacuated Palestro and
Casalino, but still held out at Vinzaglio, where
the contest raged very severely. At Palestro
and Casaline, after a ebarp fire of musketry and
artillery, the Piedniontem dashed forward, and
the Austrians slowly retreated. .se's Vinxaglio,
on the contrary, every house was a fortress, and
hand-to-hand encounters took place, not only
in the narrow streets, bat every inch of ground
inside the houses wee disputed step by step. At
length re-etifonsements weroeent to Gen. Fend.
The Kiug came rushing up from l'alestro, at the
bead of the Guards while Durand°, who had just
corms down from Casalino, attacked the Austrian
position in the rear, and its occupants were driv
en nut literally at the point of the bayonet. They
lost a few prkonem, but euoceeded in carrying
off their guns. The corsage on both sides in re

Thera was plenty ef French cavalry in the town,
and the liieg expresses great annoyance that
his request for a couple of regiments of horse

A request was also math" by his Majesty for a
French division to relieve his men, barrasered by
twelve hours' hard fightVu g , so as to enabl e them
to take some rest_ This request was not heeded
though upward of 80,1t04) Infantry were ready to
march In and around the town. Ito the poor
PieJusoutese had to spend the night in intrench
tog themselves in the positions which they had
captured. The day broke, and the troops, tired
and feverish with the previous day's fighting
and the previous night's toil, lay down in their
ranks behind their piled muskets, expecting to
be ordered to move forward in the morning; but
a little after ~, A. u., they now three compact
Austrian columns advancing to re-capture the
pasitiona from which they had been driven on
the preview; day. Nothing could surpass the
calm intrwidity with which Victor Emanuel's
soldiers repelled the Austrian attack; but such
was the hay of the onslaught that they were
forced bock, and the Austrians were once more
masters of Palestro and Vinzaglio. They failed,
however in their attack on Casella°, but estab
lished themselves at Confienza. The Piedmon
tees, though driven back, were by no means
disheartened, thiiingh their position was not ex- ,
empt from danger. A French division were
hastening, apparently, to support the Piedmors
tese, and a large force was approaching the
Scala, nearly opposite to Berge Vercelli, eo as
to cross it. The Austrians, by a rapid movement
occupied Torregio, Vignette, and Scevarda, no
as to prevent the junction between the French
and the Piedinontene. By this movement, the
Piedmontese were fairly outflanked, and ranch
surprise and not a little indignation was felt
among the Piedmontese officers that the French
division immediately behind them remained mo
tionless, without even making a demonstration
to atop the advance of the Austrians. The King
tried a desperate effort; he sent an aid-de-camp
to the General commanding, Gen. Troche, and
ordered him to send a brigade to drive the Ans.
trans out of Outwards. The General replied
that he bad order, to protect the passage of the
bridge for the French troops on the other Bide
of the Setae, and that he could take no share in
the action without the Emperor's exprese orders.
At this MOMCIIt the fighting had been pies on
for five bourn; the men began to show tome
signs of discouragement. The Colonel of the
ad Regiment of Zoutives, whose regiment had
been drawn up along the river side, exclaimed,
"Hats eta malheurtur vont etre alinter," and, eend•
log an orderly to the Emperor for permission to
attack, without waiting for a replydashed across I
the Seah, and moved right up to forgo Vercelli.
The men rushed along with that cat like elastic
step and that disregard of etrielly regular forma
tion that characterizes them. On -they rushed,
regardless of bogs, rice-grounds, bullets and
grape-shot. They were only brought up by a
rivulet, which had been used to turn the wheel
of a mill. There Is no bridge, but two narrow
planks without a handrail, like the teens In
"fionnambula," at Her Majesty's. The Aus
trians, seeing the advance of this re-enforee
menu, which threatened thole flank, had placed
flee guns in battery on the top of the opposite
bank, which is rather steep. The Emma
swarmed over the bridge, and rushed amuse the
river, the water of which was lashed into spray
by the hien/3110i shower of grape. They rushed
up the steep embankment like tigers; men tum
bling down here and there and rolling down
into the water below. There was a last discharge
from the guns when at edit:dance of come twelve
yard,. The ZenaVes leveled their bayonets and
closed .up for their final dash. The men fell by
dozens, but with a loud yell the assailants rush
ed forward, and the battery was cleared. Mean
while, on the other aide this re-enforcement re
stored the drooping spirits of the Pledmontese.
The Klog, with his escort, when he sow symp
toms of wavering, dashed forward In advance of
the troops; they followed him. The Austrians
precipitately, but without. disorder, retreated to
Palestro, which was ultimately recaptured—
street by aired, house by house. Al two o'olook
their columns were fairly driven back, and the
Piedmoulese held the ground whioh they had
occupied in the morning before the attack be.

WINDOW SHADES,
The Austrians retired for a few miles, but still
presented a menacing and unbroken front. It
le a pity, as there was plenty of art illery and
cavalry in the French Kees, that they were not
pnrened—probably the French and Pledmonteee
fancied that sufficient for the day wee the tight
log thereof. In that case they must hare been
rather surprised when at six o'clock a vigorous
cannonade announced the recommencement of
the action. This last combat was, I am told,
excinsivelysustained by the Coneo brigade and
two regimental of Zooms. It was Inkarinko
over again, the Austrians surging up like a tide,
and breaking against the Zouavee and the Pled
monks°. The King whose gallantry seems to
partake of the character of a veritable freny,
was In the thickest of the tight, charging at the
head of his escort, a squadron of light hone,
and hewing his way through the foe like a man
at arms of the olden time. &oh a combat can

lantry of endways& the expense of the other.

PALCATRO, June Vercelli the high road
to Novara and another to Mortara cross the Se
tae, as well as the railway both to the lakes and
to Lombardy. The bridge at Vercelli thus opens
the high road of communication to both coun
tries, and therefore of no small importance to
both parties inn ;entry so intercepted by dikes
and ditches, ne ciliary for irrigation, as the
plains of Upper Italy are.
The Austrians, when they retired from Ver
celli, destroyed thp only bridge which nerved
both for the high road and the railway, one aide
being reserved for the for Mer and the other for
the latter. The great variations in the height
of the river, in consequence of the late Mine, for
some time foiled their efforts, as their mines
were twice under Water, but, the river having
again subsided with the same rapidity as it had
risen, they effected their purpose at last, and
blew up the two middle arches, thus breaking
off the most important line of communication
with Novara and the Lomellina.
About ten days ago, as you know,. the 'Avis
ion Cialdini was ordered to effect a passage, and
establish itself on the other side. The movement
was soceeesfol, and the division established it
self in Berge Vercelli, the first village of any
importance on the other side, about two miles
from the Sesia, on the high road to Novara. Ev
er since then the division stopped there without
being in the least disturbed by the Austrians,
who were posted in the neighboring villages.
The day before yesterday, the anniversary of
the victory of the Sardinians at Goito in 1847,
was chosen to dislodge them from their positions
on the road to Mortara. From the high road to
Novara two main roads branch off to the right
at the distance of about a mile from each ether,
the first a little beyond the village of Moline,
and the second from the village of forgo Ver
celli. Both of these run almost parallel to each
other in a southeasterly direction until they
unite at Robbie, about ten miles from thin lad
ter, and at about the same bight, are the two
villages of Palestro and Vinzaglio, which were
occupied and barricaded by the Austrian avant°
garde, consisting of 1,500 men in each village ,
and half a battery.
In order to understand the difficulties which
the Sardinians bad to contend with, I must give
you a description of the locality. The whole
country, from the Sesta to the east, is one mass
of corn and rice fields, dvided from each other
by raised causerays and ditchee of three or four
feet, which servo for the purpose of irrigation
On the borders of these divisions between the
fields are closely-planted trees, mostly poplars
and plane-trees, while the fields themselves are
studded with large guanines of mulberry trees.
The corn, the growth of which le very luxuriant
after the great rains, has an average bight of
at least Eve feet, thus allording splendid cover
for riflemen. The rice fields, on the contrary,
are jam out, and are kept continually under wa
ter; to distribute the water equally, and to re
gulate the irrigation, little raised banks of one
or two feet high are thrown up, according to the
level of the grouod,in serpentine lines. Through
this country run the two main roads, which are
artificially raised causeways, sometimes 20 or
more feet above the level of the eurrounding
fields, and the roads which lead across the fields
from ouo detached farmhouse to another, being
almost on the same level as the fields, are eveu
now difficult to pass. From this little sketch,
without which it would he impossible to under
stand the engagement, you may gather what were
the dif f iculties of the attacking and the Ildiall
tigee of the defendmg party. First of all, it was
quite impossible to deploy a line of any length
and thus take advantage of a numerical superb
wily. There was likewise no probability bring
ing up and employing artillery except on -the
onuseways, which are just of sufficient width to
admit two guns, and no more Rot, as if to put
Sardinian bravery to the to 1, the position of
the two villages la in_ itself of considerable
strength At trinekedebot dietetic° trout them
runs the canalized atream of the Boggle Rosen,
a rapid stream of at least 6 feet in phial and Ft
in depth. The only bridges over it are on the
main read& Anyou e'poreach the villages, the
ground begins lo dee gently for about 200 yards
from the bridge, and then all of a sudden rapid
ly and precipitously to a bight of from 20 to :10
re e d fle thin elevation are built the villages,
while the road itself, for which so steep an io
dine would have been impracticable, is cot
through like a broad railway cutting, with pre•
dpiteeely doping sides to the right awl to the
left. Al the entrance rd both viitages the Aus
trians had thrown op a barricade The tillages
like all Italian villages, more or leas, are built
entirely of stone and brick, and they have their
almost atraight main Street, through which the
road runs, and their old-fashioned °beech, with
the never failing campanile tower, very conve
nient in times of, war tai-dimeover the approach of
an enemy on the straight road. The hooves
themselves, built round a courtyard, and hut
scantily provided with small windowe, are so
many small redoubts, in which a determined ad
versary can eel! the victory dearly to the attack
ing party
When the right column approached Palestro II
section of artillery of the 16th battery was ad
vanced, and began to shell the place, while a
battalion of Bernaglleri, I believe the 10th, and
a battalion of the 16th of the line, were sent to
the right by one of the byways and across the
fields, to try and penetrate toward the left of
the village. Almost at the seine time this col
umn was coming to the first beam the artillery
had shaken the defenders of the front line. As
aeon as this was observed, another battalion of
the 15th of rho line advanced super de charge,
and this double movement was sufficient to clear
the place ef the Austrians, who retired behind
the churchyard beyond the village, which occu
pies a considerable space of ground, and is our
rounded by a high wall. They placed at the
name time several guns en the main road beyond
the village, and on the same lino with the church
yard, in order to use them against the Sardin
ians, should they attempt to debouch from the
village. The church is about the middle of the
town, on the highroad, which makeea bend just
at that plate, no that aa noon the Austrians
were driven out of the village the troops were
quite protected from the guns which the enemy
had placed on the high road beyond it. In or
der to silence theme guns, a section of position
guns was brought up just at the corner of the
church; but the Auetrians seem to have had their
range, for in a moment the position guns were
dismounted. Nothing daunted by this, another
section of the 16th battery was brought up im
mediately, which soon silenced the enemy's fire.
An soon as this was done the Austrians retreat
ed, and the Pledmentese were in possession of
the village, and a considerable number of pris
oners.
The village of Vinzaglio, although even more
formidable by its position, and more calculated
for defense, offered lege resistance, and was ta
ken at the point of the bayonet, very little pow
der being used for the purpose. The Austrians
evacuated linzaglio sometime before they were
driven out of Paiute°, for the Piedmontese had
Scarcely succeeded in dislodging the Austrians
from the churchyard, when on the byroad which
leads from VinzagHo to Paleetro two Austrian
guns, with their escort, came toward the latter
village. Probably they thought that Palmate
was still held by their companions, whom they
wished to rejoin. As soon as the two guns were
perceived on the road a detachment wee sent
from Palestro to take them, - which was effected
without any difficulty, as the drivers out the
traces and left the guns to their fate. They
were emit the same evening to Vomit'.
Tho Divielon Cialdini took op its position in
the village for that evening. The same evening
arrived the 3d Regiment of &naves, the same
which was in the Crimea during the Russian
war. This regiment hoe been attached by the
Emperor to the King of Sardinia.
IThus ended the anniversary of the battle of
Giotto. - The next morning about ft o'clock th e
Austrians' wereeeon advancing in force seemingly
to retake the poeition of Paiestro, which they
had lost the day before. Although the comport
lie tower of the village is tolerably high, owing
to the nature of the country, which I described
Oboe, their approach, could not be seen until
they were quite clue; el.lll lees could their plan
be discovered. The country beyond the village
bo mostly level land, on before it the rico gelds
predominate; the ground is less studded with
trees In the neighborhood, consequently more
favorable for the formation of a line of battle.
The cannonade of the Austrians against the
village which lasted for come time before their
reel plan became apparent, for all at once a
large body of infantry, with two batteries, showed
themselves to the Piedmontese right on the
banks of the little canalized stream which I men
tioned before. It was plain that the Woollen
of the Austrians wee nothing more nor less
thou to out off from the Sesta the advanced
troupe of (ho Piedmouteso. As scan as thte was
peroolved, while the main body of the Hairnet'.
teee attacked the Austrians from the village the
regiment of Zonavea which occupied the ex
treme eight, a battalion of the oth, and another
of the 18th Pledmoeiese of the Line, received
orders to advance. Animated by a brotherly
emulation, this gallant body of men rushed up
to the petition watch the Austrian had taken to
their right, and in spite of a formidable fire of
grape shot which received
.them, they threw
theineelles with megaton' dash on the Au
ld= trunn. Ths7 1344 about 400 Ards to arm '
under the murderous fire of the enemy, which
thinned their ranks indeed; but did not abate
their ardor, for after the fifist, discharge they
took to the bayonet, and their advance was so
rapid
ut that
.the Tyrolese Chasonne, who were
thrown o Id skirmishing line before the guns,
had no time to retire, bat bad to rush back pen
men among the Piedroontese and the Zonaves.
Eight guns and a large number of prisoners were
the result of this brilliant attack; fi ve of th e guns
were taken by the Zonaves, and three by the
Piedmonteee. Ent the rush rui made eo mm

Which
took either guns. Besides these eight gun s ,
about 800 or 000 prisoners and wounded fell
into the hands of the Allies. The dead ar e i n
proportion. The first care was, of coerce, for
the wounded, and it is but Justice to say that
the Austrians whose fate it was to be wounded
and fall into the hands of the Mlles cannot com
plain of their treatment. This will produce so
much the more effect on these poor people, as it
seems the idea has been spread among them that
the Allies were capable of doing anything to
their prisoners. The Austrian prisoners excite
here as you may imagine, no small curiosity.
I don't know whether the youngest part of their
troops were placed on purpose at the advanced
points, but certainly the greater part of those
taken are mere boys.
