Old Dominion accuses the Maryland Slaveho!d

from the following remarks by the Norfolk
Southern argue:
'Well, the Marylanders, after having a grand
and imposing Convention on the subject, have
decided to do nothing in regard to the •immense
nod still increasing free negro population of
the State.' With the booboo of 74,788 free
blacks against 90,368 slaves in the State, they
have determined substantially to let the matter
rest. Of course, the people of Maryland have
the right to eettle the question for themselves;
but it is easy to sro that the tendency of their
policy will be to wipe out Slavery from among
them, at a comparatively early day, Wo shall
8000 cease to regard Maryland as a Slave State
practically. Politically she has been dead to
the South for a long time past."

Itelazon Smith arrived by the last steamer,

doubtful whether they can be, induced to do an

them, because he thinks the other fruition the
strongest. To defeat him, it is necessary to use
the ten Republican members of the Legislature,
who are willing to help his opponents, if they
can thus stop the election of a Senator, or can
