too t •ot IV Herr CCOP. 4 t-it is now generally l
ot , ctee.led that the quadrangular Territory boun -
on the :tooth 1., the National need, on the
West by the railromt from tittlembue to Sand.-
_ by, end on the last by Pennsylvania, is where
the frost hoe been the mom destructive, and that
outt.t.lo of tilt.ee lines it has only extended in
narrow strips In occasional place.. The first
query ir. What was the product of that tract
of country ' In 1457 Milo had the largest crop
that war gathered for many years, the quantity
being by return to the State Auditor 2V97,1:14
bushels of which the quantity in the above de
scribed district north of fire counties through
which the National lload passes, amounted to
h...:71)...f;i1 bushels—if we roll to this the product
of the fire counties through which the road
panties, the total amonnt produced in the "in
fected district," was 7,907,913 bushels, leaving
A. the product of the rear of the State 17A130,-
701 bushels. Supposing that the three.quarters
of the crop in the "infected district" is a total
loss, it would still leave the State a orop of nine
teen and a half millions of bushels, for it will be
admitted that the 'increased breadth sown south
of the National Komi, and in the western coon
:ties of the State, will more than balance the lons
sustained by frost outside of the frosted district.
With the ample allowance made for the loss by
the front in the quadrangle, joined to the in•
creased breadth sown, compared with 1867, we
think a safe conjecture is nude In estimating
the present crop, over and above the lose by frost
at twenty-two millions Of bushels of wheat. It
we call the population• of the Stale 2,500,000
and allow four bushels as the average consump
tion of each individual, and the number of acres
devoted to wheat as being 2,000,000, requiring
1,000,000 bushels for geed, we still have a eur
plus of 8,1100,000 bushels beyond our require.
meats for food and aced.
The product of the twenlynix counties lying
in the yiadrangle previously alluded to, but not
embracing any of the contiliee through which
the National Road passes, was as follows:
1839 6,616522 bushels.
!NEI 6,185,689
1857 6,270,270 "
Showing that the district now so badly injured
by frost has not increased in producliveneee in
the last twenty years.
In the thirty-six counties Rooth of the Nation
al Road, and including the counties through
which the road passes, the following was the
product
I bushels
003,1,11 •
I 1,0:18,41;.1 • •

la the countien west of the Railroad from Col
umlaut to blaudosky, and north of the Nationtv

18" 0 1,695,855 bushels.
1810 2,9117,016 "
1857 1,508,880
As these figures are all given from as reliable
tables as can bo procured, they prove conclu
sively that the oldngleat district may be seriously
injured in He product, without producing fam
ine prices for bread on the Litate of Ohio, and
should the other States furnish the expected
quota of wheat, the deficiency In Ohio will have
uo effect whatever in the prices at theseaports
on the Lakes, or on the Atlantic, after supplies
from the now crop begin to roach the markets.

Tue AIIII7IIIAX Sountsa.—There is no army
in the world in which so many minute and ela
borate inkructions are laid down for the guid
ance-if:id government of the private moldier as
tho Austrian. The soldier is told to be faithful
to God and to his Sovereign. The language in
whioh ho addresses a superior, from the corpor
al upwards, Is prescribed for him. fie is to use
the word liar to the corporal, and the third
person plural to cadets and °Meters. Lie is to
salute sentinels, and if ho is carrying anything
in the one hand ho must astute with the other;
and If both hands are occupied, he must eland
still and face outwards while an ;Amor is mum
log. The army regulations even provide for the
Wafthing of the private's mouth and eyes, for
the combing of his hair, for the cutting of his
nails, for the shaving of his beard, for his change
of linen, for his bathing under certain regula
tions when not heated, and also lying in the
can bareheaded, or eoddeoly quenching hi s
thirst when in perspiration.
fltnuu NATODII IN BOOKII.-1l is a proverb
that "thero is a great deal of human nature in
men," but it is equally and sadly fano that there
ill amazingly littlo of it In books. Fielding is
the only English novelist who deals with life in
its broadest sense. Thackeray, his disciple and
congener, and Dickene, the congener of Smollett,
do not so much treat of Life as of the strata of
Soolety—the one studying nature from the Club
room window, the other from the Reporters'
box in the Police Court. Shakspeare drew ideal
and Yielding natural men and women ; Thacke
ray draws either gentlemen or enobs, and Dlok-,
ens either unnatural men or the oddities nett:tr
ot only in the loweet grades of a highly artificial_
system of society. The Mal tiro know Human
Nature; of the two titter, one kuowe what te
called the World, and the other the arta' of
London.
Is the case of the Cave girl Amy, convicted at
Richmond, Va., of rubbing the United States
Mail, Chief Justice Taney has denied a motion
for a reversal of the sentence, the plea being that
Amy, a slave, was not amenable to the penalties
of the law, and decides that slaves are subject to
punishments under the laws of the United States.
The course of Judge Taney in this instance
furnishes another proof of the purpose of our
highest legal tribanal to lend itself to the inter
ests of the South, regardless of all other consid
erations. It strikes us, however, that his opinion
must have an entirely different effect from what
was expected or intended—for it absolutely re
verser the laredStatt derision!—Syraestse Jour.
It was hardly to be expected that a Court which
did not hesitate to pervert the Constitution and
deny the expressed views of its framers, would
pause at such a trifle as merely contradicting its
own decisions.
This only corroborates what was pretty gene
rally understood before, that the Supreme Court
will decide Slaves to be "persons" or not persons,
"property" or not property, "citizens" or not
citizens, just as the Slavehoiding interest may
require. Where it is necessary for the ends of
Slavery, to have them pronounced "property,"
the Court will rule that they are property.
Where it is necessary for the ends of Slavery
that they should be considered " persons," the
Coprt will rule that they are persons. Consist.
ancy may be expected from the Court, only in
one respect, ifs decisions will all be on the Pro-
Slavery nide, as soon Be the judges can find out

A BLIDINII BCALO or POLITENESI3.—Count de
Nieuvrerke is - celebrated for the tact with which he
marks by word and gesture the degree of esteem
or consideration doe to the rank of his guests.
To indicate his success in this particular it is
familiarly said that Prince Talleyrand most
have taught him his beet lesson, the Mari con
nected with which runs thus: One day Talley
rand had a dozen guests to dinner, and after the
soup he offered some beef to his 'visitors. "My
Lord Duke," said ho to one with an air of defe
rence, selecting the best piece, "may I have the
honor of offering you some beef? My lord
Marquis," he said to a second, with a gracious
smile, "may I have the pleasure of offering you
some beef ?" To a third he said, with an affa
ble air, "Dear Count, nosy I offer you some beef""
With an amiable smile he asked a fourth, "Baron
will you hake some beef?" Too fifth, who bad
no title of nobility, but was an advocate, he
said, "M. le Comoseiller, will you have any beef !"
Finally, to the gentleman at the bottoni of the
table, Talleyrand, pointing to the dish with hie
knife, called oat, with a jerk of the head rind a
patronizing smile, "A little beef?"
WaiIt.CASLE DESEATIONS.—NearIy a whole cola
party of Roman soldiers arrived nt Florence a
few days ago, having deserted with their uni
forms upon their backs, and their arms In their

"It would seem as If the Pope was about to
lose his whole army by desertion. Intelligence
comes that nearly a thousand men, with several
pieces of artillery, are now on the road between

is not probable that either the Papal or French
authority put any obstacles 'in the way of such
a movement, as not slightest dependence can he
placed upon Roman soldiers to enstain the gov
