THURSDAY 140BNINV, JUNE 16, 1850 20.1108011. A CALLISIG.—Tbe editor of the Varmer's Journal says: "Some - portions of the following, from our own pee, were published in en otherjournal. .We publish tbeth for the rea son that - we believe the views important to our readers, and which we think they would do well to consider attentively : When Paul told his son in tha Christian faith to "let no man despise him," he did not Intend that Timothy should knock down the first man --that treated him with disrespect, but that be should behave so much like a man and a Chris tian, that It would not be In human nature not to esteem and respect him; when be spoke of thllignirYing his office, it was not that he would brag of it, bat that he would fill it well; and so we apprehend it is to be of any calling. To fill it well; and to train the children born in it to fill it well or some other useful calling, it is to magnify it; and there is very little danger but that, when the carmen' of this country, honor their own calling, and rear their children to honor whatever is good and useful, the world will. appreciate_it and them. One of the meet hurtful errors that pervade the country, is that which denies that the farmer is a business man. Speak of a business man, and people think you mean a merchant or a manufacturer, or some gobetireen who thrives it the expense of both. The merchant, they suppose, is a very intelligent personego, a wide awake, sharp thinking man. The manufacturer, they suppose is the same. If either of theta is unenterprising, they concede that be will fall behind la the race, and it is bo. But let any farmer undertake taanswer all the questions that pertain to the cultivation of that:mil, and he will noon find that his ism !melees; one requiring as much reflection, &attach forethought, as much I shrewdness (not a shrewdrices that only degener cues into a low cunning, fraud cheating) as any other, and to which as much knowledge, as mach experience, as much keen observation, and we will add,as much reading can be advantageously applied as to any other. That the merchant should read the history of commerce and study the markets, but that the farmer should work; that, the manufacturer should investigate the eourco of his materials, the capabilities of his machinery, and the wants of the world, but that the former should work; that the mechanic should understand the philos ophy of his trade to the core, hut that the firmer should work, work, and when be is done work go to sleep, is a fatal heresy. We have watched the farming of this nod • other countries for nearly half a century, always intensely Interested in its welfare, desirous of Resumes, grieved by its failures, and we here affirm without fear of contradiction, that it is not the hardest working farmers that hove sue. ceeded the beat. Those who have been good. thinkers and diligent but moderate workers' have succeeded. God has so arraigned the affairs of this world, that it is not beet for any one man to do the merle of two. He who undertakes it thwarts the purpose of his Maker, and fights against his own interest. You may do areason able day'e labor every day, and be none the less intelligent and manly for it. The man who is ashamed to do this is ashamed of his Maker's laws. Bat if you undertake two days' work in one day, yen cannot be much of a man. Solo mon said, "Much increase is by the strength of the ox," but he was too wise to 'say, that a farm er will prosper just in proportion to the amount of his labor. Some of the best farmers we have ever known were feeble men, unable to do more than a mod erate day's work in a day; and we ascribe their success to thefaat, that Conscious of their phys ical weakness, they cultivated their minds the more, thought, planned, made their calculations well, laid oat their work to be done at best pOtleli- Me advantage, and so come out best at the end of the year, more than making up in head work; what they lacked in that of a strong arm and a giant frame; and wherever we have known to farmer, with no ViCIOCIB habits or unfortunate associations, to run a farm through and come out a pauper, he has generally been one of those stout able bodied men who could mow five scree a day with an old fashioned scythe, and do other work in proportion. We will not say that farming is a genteel em ployment. In the raiser sense of that term, it is not as genteel .as selling ribbons behind the counter. But it is as respectable; and will be more eo'if the farmers will do justice to their own convictions. It is compatible with the highest intelligence; and the highest intelli gence can be made to bear favorably on its re sults. If the farmers of this country be true to themselves nothing can thwart their onward progress. .Neither the merchants nor the . msen- lecturers, if they wished, as neither of them do, _nor yet the army of middle men, as numerous and meddlesome among us as the locusts end frogs in Pharaoh's breed (roughs, could put them down, or prevent their avocation from be oombs_g as honorable as it is useful.
