No. Oh Fifth Sheol
he-r Wean SCTIOOL —Ay the r oil of tho
school year draws near, there are tokens of i hat
event beginning to appear. We hear of school ex -
aminations, schoolethibitions, etc. At the First
Ward, yesterday, Mr. li. N. Avery, who is a
very able and successful teacher, and withal a
gentleman who appreciates the responsibility of
the leacher and ever labors to discharge it, pre.
settled to certain of his mils, certificates, es a
recognition of worth and an endoreemw of their
efforts to acquire useful knowledge. Some of
the Directors were present at the ceremony, to
gether with certain ladies who aro inter:6llrd
in the intellectual progress of the young. °
Rey. C. W. Quick, County. Superintendent,
was present, and distributed the certificates
among the successful scholars. The certificate
is elegantly and elaborately engraved, and the
child who receives ono may well feel proud of tie
possession. Mr. Quick made appropriate re
marks on giving the certificates. We believe
there is no more successful school in the city
than Mr. Avery's.
Tux Fotrartt.—There is some talk of celebra
ting the 9th this year. We believe the most
aensible way is the one into which people here
about have gradually fallen of their own accord.
Let people get together and seek the clot groves
in the country ; let there be a universal pic-nic:
ice water, cool green grass and the !shade of the
wide-spreading beech trees are the beet ingre
dients of enjoyment for the Season of the year.
For our part, sudli matters as long parades of
military, wearing thick clothing and fur cape,
carrying heavy gime and going through difficult
and wearisome evolutions, appear to be entirely
useless, if not cruel. Let all hands shut up
stores, shore and work places—we shall permit
the venders of ice cream and soda water to keep
open—and just make a'ittsb into the country.
There, for one day in the year, let us till luxu
riate no best we may, and leave the mitotic and
duet of the city to take care of itself
Tine United Prtxbyterlan, in epeaking of the
late front, oars: ^This etroke of providence has
been already greatly abused. We deoervesl It,
and ought not to try to make gain out of it. We
were boasting of our line crop, and were pleas
ed with the idea of a Enropenn war, 114 It would
MAO fine prices for our grain. God, in his
providence, has made tin to feel our hearties
neon, 401/ insteud of complaining let um kindly
submit to his rod and trust flint who has never
forsaken illoselwho trust Him."
READING.—The distinguished elocutionist,
Prof. Russell, who !MI been for a long time be
fore the public, and has met with unexampled
enccess, will give a public reading In Lafayette
ou Thursday evening. Hie selections, no
published elsewhere in our paper, Indicate a re
fined taste in the reader and will afford him am
pie '•verge nod ecopo" for the display of Ms beet
powers., We bespeak for Mr. Russell, what we
have no hesitation in predicting be will hair, a
full bourn.

ho remembered that the Lady of a woman was
found in tho Allegheny river, near White's Rip

tified as that of Mrs. Mott, and certain fads
elicited which resulted in the arrest of her son,
who Is now on trial charged with this horriblo

Rum—Warrants were issued yesterday. for the
arrest at the following fellows, on a charge of
riot, at New Linden Grove, to wit: Charles
Stemple, Jerry Gamboa, George Aiken, Daniel
Sarver, Peter Delaney, James McKee, James
Tustin, John !lively, Fred Ruch, henry Byer
man, William Jones, and others. These loose
characters, as is attested by D. Anti', who made
the information, invaded the grounds where in an
orderly and peaceable manner a large company
of Germans were enjoying n pic-tdo, and hurled
into the crowd, tumblers, sticks, stones, brick
bats and ether missiles, whereby many peaceable
and innoffensive citizens were injured. We do
hope that all these characters may be brought
up. There is McKee, for example: Dm he for.
gotten so soon where he stood this time last year 7
Does he not remember the promises and protest
lions, the tears and sobs that burst from him in
the Court room Mal clay.
ROUYN? CAIN made affidavit before the Mayor
on Wednesday, charging Jeremiah Gumbert with
assault and battery with intent to kill. As af.
Gant was passing along the street. in the Rth
ward, he alleges that Gumbert struck him with a
slung shot, or billet, without any provocation
whatever. A warrant was issued for the arrest'
of Gumbert, who was also concerned in the riot
at Linden Grove.
Another.—John Henry Ileskman made an af
fidavit before the Mayor on Tuesday, charging

SINGIIIII'B F6E1T11".11.. —The German SlMl
gerbund of the North Western States hold their
annual celebration at Cleveland to-day. It will
be remembered that they met here lost year.
Their meeting was exceedingly pleasant then,
there being but one untoward event to mar the
pleasure of that occasion, namely : the sad taking
off Prof. Baehr, by some midnight assassin.
The occasion this year at Cleveland will be,
we doubt not, pleasant in the extreme. The
gentlemen who belong to the cartoon Societies
that will be there are of the very finest class of
our German citizens, gentlemen who can appre
ciate whatsoever in beautiful in art. They be
longed in the old world to that population which
'not be trodden under the heel of tyranny,
who would sing in their own land the songs of
Freedom, and who spurned the cmatrol of des
potism.
Hence, true lovers of virtuous liberty, they
love whatever eke is beautiful, and they love
therefore and cultivate music. From leis city
the [lower of the Herman youth, the members of
the FrolisionSocietyand of the TeutoniaSociety,
went yesterday. They were accompanied by
Young's brass band, the whole company aunt
tiering not less than 1;30. Theprincipal features
of the occasion will be the performance of an
opera by the Cleveland Glee Club, Tuesday eve
ning, and the public reception of the visiting
clubs; a grand vocal and instrumental concert
on Wednesday evening, in which four or five
hundred singers, and a full orchestra, will take
part; a prize concert on Thursday afternoon and
a banquet in the evening, a procession and pic
nic on Friday. Our clubs will return home on
Saturday. We believe that by universal con
sent the prize was awarded to the Frobeinn So
ciety last year, and we trust they or, their sister
society may deserve and receive it again this
year.
