Austria.
.—For the benefit of your many
readers, I have taken the trouble to condense a short
account of the history of Austria, and the house of
Hapsburg. As all eyes are turned to that country at
this time, I doubt nut but that, with your permission,
this little history will be Interesting to many.
Austria was anciently the Belgic Gaul of the Ro
mans. It was taken from Hungary and annexed to
Germany, when it received its present name, A. IL
1040. This was after Charlemange had reestablished
the western empire—Austria being a part of what
RSA called Eastern France, its name in the German
language, listerreteb, implying eastern kingdom.
The house of Hapsburg is one of the oldest and
most illustrious families In Europe. Hapsburg we,
an nosiest castle in Switzerland, on a lofty eminence
near Schintrnach. This house was the cradle as it
were of the house of Austria, whose ancestors may
he traced back to the beginning of the thirteenth
century, when Rudolph, Count of Hapsburg, was el
evated to the empire of Germany and Arch-fluke of
Austria, A. U. 1273.
In I:104 they relinquished the title of Emperor of
I len-many, and 1,,,am0 hereditary Emperors of Aus
tria, only.

malls, Tyrol.
These, together with the army, are supposed to
contain about flirty millions of Inhabitant~, they also
differ widely in:climate, sod language and customs,
having almostas many:languages as provinces.
The limited revenue of Austria and her equally
limited credit prevent her from making a great mil
itary exertion at short notice being agricultural,
she is no consequence limited her extent of exer
tion
at the moment, hot from the amount of her
population almost indefinite in her resources. The
long duration of several of her wars is to he ascribed
to two causes her inability on the one hand to
overpower her opponents by a great effort; and the
power on the other to keep up a certain degree of
exertion for a long period. It was thus that Austria
carried on the religion. war in Germany for thirty
yearn, and persisted in the war with France in 1713,
after England and Holland had withdrawn, whilst
in the wars with rovulationary Franco and Donna
parte, after being worsted in five successive conteats,
she returned as often to the charge. At present,
however, the whole condition of Angola in regard to
tier resources is changed, in consequence of the late
internal revolutions and the unceasingly disaffected
condition of the earione nationalities, many of which
only await the embroilment of Austria in a foreign
war, in order to least themselves for ever from her
domitistricy. Iler navy I. 5o small that in compari

750,000 men, and, although far inferior io general
instruction to those of Prussia and France, yet, in a
strictly military point of view and discipline, held to
be equal to any in Europe. Its prestige was however

Tux Au.-r, ion Gailliftias —The London cor
-I..pandent of the National Intelligmrrr,
The leader of the Austrians, Field Marshal
Count Giulsy, is a Hungarian, born in 1799, at
Peeth. Ills military service is hitherto without
distinction. In the war of 194tl be hold the pont
of commandant st Trieste. Since then he has
been employed in bureau and diplomatic service,
having been Minister of War in 1550, and sub
selnently a negotiator with the Court of Russia.
The command of the army of Italy became the
reward of diplomatic achievements, and it re
mains to be seen how in his new vocation he is
la acquit himself Ito is hated by the people of
Lombardy to such a degree that when remon
strated some years ago with itadetzky against a
habit of walking unattended in the streets of
Milan the veteran replied, "Never fear for me,
Count; my life is safe from the Milanese so long
00 they know that you are to be my successor."
A more distinguished officer, the Quartermas
ter General orate invading army, is Baron Hen
ry Hess, a veteran of eeventy, two years, and a
saline of Vienna—an Austrian of pure blood,
which in the army is by no means a common oo
currence His first essay in arms was when no
ensign Upon the field of Wagram, where the
Archduke Charles wan defeated by Napoleon,.
ISO. He arose without much active distinction
during the next thirty years to the rank of Lieu
tenant Field Marshal under Itadetzky,
Six years later he enjoyed his first opportunities,
and was soon reckoned one of the beet Austrian
strategists. lie became the confidential adviser
of Radeizky, who honorably bestowed upon his
friend the credit of many an exploit which oth
erwise would have been attributed to the Com
mander in Chief The whole plan of operations
in fool, from the capture of Vicenza and victory
of Custozza to the final overthrow of litng Charles
Albert at Novarra, rum according to Iladet7.ky's
own avowal, conceived and executed by the
Quartermaster General Hese. It isnot very well
tlncleralood, therefore, why an ollicer distin
guished by these remarkable services, and who
had been entrusted with the command of the
Austrian army of observation during the Into
Russian war, should at the opening of the pres
ent campaign hold under au officer so undiatin
guishod as Count Glulay the identical position
which be held under liadetzky.
ENCCIITIOZI OF TANTIA Toetc.—Tho DOWBjUa
received from Europe brings intelligence of the
execution, by the English authorities, of Tanila
Tepee the fugitive chief of the great Indian re
bellion, who was recently captured in Central
India, after long baffling every endeavor put
forth to effect this object. He had been " tried
by drum-head court-martial and hanged."
Thus is ended a career of almost unparalleled

ror, whenever the return of hot weather uhould
encourage renewed attempt' at Insurrection. The
Frirnd g( India of a late date said, A second
mutiny is more than possible—lt is probable."
But the subsequent success of the English troops
then dispelled in small detachments through
the country, in tracing to their jungles the
chiefs of the rebel forces, must have given re
newed neurone° of the etebility of the now Gov
ernment" and the continuance of order in the
provinces. AL ouch &juncture, and with so much
material exposed to combustion, IL was of the
greatest importance that the chief instigators of
rebellion ebould be exterminated. Even a gue
rilla welfare kept up at an inhospitable season,
with a chief so artful, hardy, and unyielding as
the notorious Tends Tepee, would have been
attended with great sacrifice of life on the part of
the pursuers. We see it stated that one of the
toteet movements of the forces sent in pursuit of
the Central India rebel, has been attended with
serious results, a company of light dragoons hav
ing had nearly half their men disqualified for
cervices, in a eingle jungle trip. ,
The importance of Tullis Tope as a chieftain
appears from the tact that since he attacked Sir
Hugh Rose's force under the walls of Jhansi,
every British general of any repute in Central
India has vainly endeavored to effect his capture;
for no sooner was ho defeated in one instance
and his followers apparently scattered, than now
irruptions would take place In quarters least. ex
peeled, even while the Eogllsh troops fueled he
wan environed beyond a chance of escape.. In
repeated $1100441014 be Was despoiled of Willi-
ry and his forces wasted; yet withont seeming
to impair hie courage or diminish his hopes of
success. And when at length captured, the re
sult was attributable rather to the treachery of
a professed friend than to any ether cattse. Who
Tana& Topee was, is not difinitely known. The
London Standard of the 10th ult. says :
" He has been variously reported as Nana Sa
hib; as his cousin ; and as a low adventurer,
risen from Ito Sepoy ranks. All we know is,
that under this name the rebel chief has given us
more trouble; and has displayed greater ability
in the field, than any other native. His history
during the last six months would eonnd marvel
lous to English ears, so east is the extent of ter
ritory which he has traversed, so miraculous has
been his escape• from the columns which were
despatched in his pursuit. Indeed, his activity
carries us back . to the days of the old Alahratta
chieftains, and his courage and perseverance
awake a sympathy scarcely repressed by Lhe
recollection of his crimes. He it was who march
ed down with the Gwalior men from Calpee up
on Sir Hugh Hose, who drove Scindia from his
throne, and Those Influence and power caused
more than ones powerful rajah to devote his army
and his fortune to the rebel cause. Worsted
whenever be turned to boy, ho contrived to lead
his dispirited followers from the banker of the
Jumna to the province of Guserat, and then re
traced his footsteps through the midst of the
columns assembled to effect his capture. The
whole of Central India was traversed in his rapid
flight, and it is not going too far to say that
towards the aloes of his career ho gave employ
ment to the armies, and excited the constant
alarms of the three presidencies."
The native chieftain who still refuse allegiance
to the British authorities are represented as
much inferior to Totals Topee, their leading spi
rit, and there was reason to hope that all would
soon return to subjection.
A WOMAN KILLED DT use HUBBARD to THE
SIXTEESTII WARD.—It transpired yesterday af
ternoon that a horrible murder had been com
mitted at No. 227 k West nth street.—a woman
named Sarah Jane Meyer, having been murder
ed by her husband, Geo. Meyer. It appears
that about seven o'clock, yesterday morning,
the wife of Meyer came to the door of her apart
ments and screamed -loudly (or help, but after
remaining there for a' few moments, she retired
to her rooms. Shortly afterward she was ob
served emptying a pail of water In the yard and
again retiring. At about 10 o'clock ehe again
began ecreamiog, continuing for some time,
when again !Hence prevailed, and noise was no
more heard. At about one o'clock, the neigh
bors began to suspect something was wrong, and
several proceeded to the door of Meyer's room,
asking admittance, but no reply was given. Then
feeling satisfied that all was not right they sent
for a policeman, who broke open the door of the•
nom, when the body of the woman was found
near the stove dead, and covered with wounds-
Meyer was brushing his hair, when the police
man entered the room, and raid. "She struck
me first," anestated that he was joet on the
point of going to the station house and surren
dering himself. lie was immediately arrested
and locked up in the 10th Ward station house.
His two children were found asleep in bed in - an
inner apartment. . .
Ito examining Meyer's room a smoothing iron
and a pair of shoes were found Covered with
blood, both of which he used no doubt to carry
out his hellish purpose,
Both parties wero intemperate and quarreled
a great deal.—N. Y. 7rib., Jane G.
