U S. DESTRICT COST,—The case of the United
States against Levi Long, was still on trial in
the District Court, yesterday. After the exam
ination on the part of lilt. government of several
witnesses, in addition tot those we reported
yesterday, the District AttOrney, Mr. Roberts,
rested. No new facts of much apparent im
portance were developed. The postmaster of
Cumberland, Mr. Taylor, was examined, who
was present at the arrest and examination of
Long. and who corroborated the testimony of
McGuire in Many particulars. The assistant
postmaster of Baltimore was present, anti pro
duced the register of that office for the blth and
27th of Septgmber, which were put in evidence
to .haw that the letter alleged to have been em
bezzled, ltd not aril, at that office on either of
he days above.
Ilan. .1. R Ells then opened the case in abrief
and appropriate speech, indicating the grounds
ou which the defence stood and what they were
prepared to prove.
The defense then brought forward a large
nuldber of respectable citizens of Somerset
county, who leatified to the good eharecier of
Long.
Enoch Long, brother of defendnht, testified that
he has been clerk in the store of the defendant
for three years; on the Tuesday after the arrest
Nelson Flchtner told witness, in presence of Jo
siah Dom, that on Saturday, the 25th of Sept.,
McGuire came down in the snail coach, but he
(F ) did not know him: that he (F.) took the
Wittenberg mail, where he (F.) was postmaster,
changed it as usual and put it back in the stage:
that McGuire then took the mail to the house,
opened and examined it; Fichtner asked him
what authority he had to open the mail; Mo-
Quire showed his authority as special agent;
then Fichtner soya "all right:" he (F.) told Mc-
Guire to go along with him to the Post-office; he
went and examined all the letters and packages
iu the Pest-office; found nothing wrong but one
package, which he said the old man (Fichtner's
father) had left out by mistake. Witness tend
ed bong's store, on the 25th and anti 27th of
September; there were gold dollars taken in on
both days. Mr Winter, from near Wittenberg,
was there on Saturday nod bought goods, pay
ing come small coin; the desk mentioned in Mr.
McGuire's testimony, had no pigeon holes in it
nor any drawers; the porn• montiaie lay on a
shelf inside, and any one could see it - on opening
the desk; it was need to keep change in for the
use of the store; I hod put- money in it on Mon
day; there were about $lO in it tu gold dollars.
Josiah Dorn was next sworn, who testified to
many points corroborating am testimony of
Long, in reference to Nlcilinire's examination of
the mail bags at Wittenberg. At this point the
Court adjourned The arguments of counsel
will be mode to-day

to-day to decide whether or not that organization The Convention then proceeded to ballot as fol
is to 00 continued. In this matter we should loan
rise above a mere party spirit—above all that is
unworthy and ealfieh in its spirit.
There exists such a diversity of sentiment
throughout the church on the subject of union
that it was difficult for the oommillee to arrive
at a conclusion; this however they have done
with entire unanimity.
He went into a history of conventions, and
said the Reformed Presbyterian Church has
done all she expected to do—made an experi.
ment. There was no pledge given that she would
carry on negotiations. The U. P. Church is
only making an experiment herself. Let ue
wait and see how it works.
Dr. hlclklillan, another member of the com
mittee, said we cannot do our work as well in
any other church as in this. I hope we will not
exist for 20 years. But let tts wait till we get a
better. Some have said they will not go into that
church; they would rather go into other churches.
It Is clear, then, that no boo churches in the land
will hold us If we disband. Our ship is etrong
and sea worthy—there aro rotten planks In the
U. P. ships. Let us remain in our own chip.
The vessel is not on fire; there is no storm—there
is nothing to fear. It may be that in a few years
we will go on board their ship, or they will come
on board ours. But let us wait till their chip its
sea-worthy.
After prayer Synod adjourned for the day, for
the purpose of accepting the invitation of Geo.
If. Stuart, Esq., to visit his country seal, at
Spring Brook.

Si nricen's Pt - L.31021a Starr.—We copy from
the Philadelphia L•dyer the following notice of
Dr. Sohenk's l'ulroonic Syrup, and we do so the
more readily, from the feat that we learn from
Dr. Geo. H. Keyser, of' 140 Wood street, that he
has Been Mr. Simpson, personally, and has con
versed with him in regard to his case. Dr. Key
ser, in his recent vieit to Philadelphia, has seen
numbers of cases of coneumption which have
been cured by the Pulmonic Syrup. He says
that the Doctor's office is daily crowded with pa
tients to consult him and take his remedies.
Ma. EDITOR . —I wish to make known, through
the columns of your paper, to the public, the
following statement:—My son, George T. Simp
son, has been for several years afflicted with pul
monary consumption, having a scrofulous ten
dency; we tried various medical treatments, but
nothing seemed to give any permanent relief. I
was advised to take him to Europe, which I did
remaining moat of the time in France, and re
turning home with him vary little improved.
We then called on Dr. Schenck with a view to as
certain by means of his reepirometer the exact
condition of hie lunge, a careful diagnosis was
made, and we found that his left lung was very
much diseased, and that he was suffering also,
from a chronic inflammation of the muccus mem
brane of the other. With our consent, the Doc
tor took him to his residence, below Bristol, Ps.,
where he remained under his charge about eight
weeks, and in that short space of time, I am
very happy to state, he effected his cure. Ilia
cough.and night sweets,. which were very pro
fuse, have ceased entirely, and all other bad
symptoms have disappeared—his breast, which
was fiat and contracted, has expanded four inch
es; be has gained in flesh amazingly; his pulse,
which was never less than 140, is now down to
SO. I make this statement in order that others,
who may be afflicted in like manner, may know
what course to pursue. lam convinced I never
saw so great change in any person in so short a
time. Tnos. Simms.
