Tax Hon. W. W. Boyce, of the Sixth Congres
- . elonal District of South Carolina, has published
a letter dated May 11th, in which he says :
"Latterly repudiate Judge Douglas' idea that
• s Territorial Legislature may discriminate
against 'slavery, and nothing could induce me to
support for the Presidency any one standing on
this platform. I consider it as clear as a mathe
matical problem that the South hare a right to be
protected with dui? slave property in the Territories,
and that Congress, or deer instrument', the Territori
al Legislatures, should afford this protection. As a
question of practical action, I would not at this
time have originated this issue, -but having been
raised, as a Southern Representative, I shall de
mand_the fullest measure of our rights."
Ir is reported that Judge Gould, at the Soho
harts N. T. Circuit tail week, rendered a dee'-
, in an anti-rent suit which gives to the ten
ants all they claim. The Judge ruled that the
Cora of Appeals having just decided that "the
condition of landlord end tenant" does not sub
sist. between Patroons on the one side and the
temente on th 6 other; therefore the former can
not Sue the latter for any rent in any shape. In
consequence.of this decision, Judge Gould ruled
that-the- Patroons could not maintain suits
against the Landholders. If this decision is
stated correctly, the anti-renters have accom
plished everything they sought in the Carle.
A Tax letter says "Anti, theuative town
of Alfieri, is oelebratedsfor the superiority of its
wines. It-is on the road from Turin to Alessan
- this, followed by the French troops. Some of
the principal persons of the country conceived a
plan which was unanimously agreed to, to offer a
glass of wine to every French soldier that passed,
and a Committee was formed to carry out the
idea with regularity. Bach persons as could not
supply wine offered their services in the distil
. batten of it, and the bakers andpastry cook.
were not lees generous. The result was that
when a regiment arrived, either on toot or other
wise, a glass of good wine, a biscuit and a cigar,
were offered to each man."
A successful fraud has bees perpetrated aim
ultanseously at eeveral points, in the issue of
notes from the genuine plates of the "Brighton
Market Bank,' Mms., with forged signatures.
It is, of course, next to impossible to detect them
' and - the only eafe coarse is to reject them ; though
it Is not probable that they are in general-circu
lation, as they are dill of the denomination of
$lOO, Notes of the "Bank of Chattanooga,"
Term, similarly uttered, are also in circulation,
and being of smaller denomination, may be
more promiscuously circulated.
A French magistrate, noted fur his love of the
--pleasures of the table, speaking one day to a
friend, said:
"We have just been eating a superb turkey ;
it was excellent, stuffed with unifies to the neck,
tender, delicate, and of a high flavor. We left
only the bones."
"How many of you were there" said hie
friend.
"Two," replied the magistrate ; "the turkey
and myself."
Astmuces political and geographical divisions
have ever been aaiumbling atone to British wri
ters, who seem to think it not worth their while
to consult the atlas or gazetteer. The last Ed
inburgh Review notices Mr. Hammond'e Speech
• at Barnwell Court House, New York, and the
Westminster, in a complimentary notice of Prof.
Rogers' report on the Geology of Pennsylvania,
says:
"There can be no question of the wisdom of
the Legislature of Philadelphia in determining
as It did, in the year 1886, on a geological and
mlnerogleal survey of the &atm"
Tun Charleston Mercury says it is "a piece of
downright audacity to say the Black Republican
party looks to the overthrow of this Union."' It
adds:
"Disunion would be fatal in every point of
view to Black Republicanism. They know it
'well, anti would eeek to prevent it, if they had
the power and could succeed, even at the point
of the sword. It is the strongest Union party
in the country, not only from policy and the
dictates of self preservation, but by the princi
' plea of cansolidation which they entertain."
Tits Vicksburg true Southron, a democratic
- 1-journal, rejoices in the fact that "a convention
of nine Southern States has deliberately spoken
in favor of a repral of all laws, State and Ped
en!, prohibiting the slave trade." It further
remarks that possibly the people will not "en
