PUBLISHED DAILY AND WHIG LY fL . do co RTC WILLI?. AMOVI ?twist Correspondence. of thoPltfotourgh Gau U..; THE OLD SCHOOL GENERAL. ASSEMBLY ISDIANAPOLIS, May 26.—Serrnen Day.—After the usual devotional exercise', Dr. Palmer, of New Orleans, presented the report of the com mittee on Theological Seminaries. The Srminerirs.—The committee report a largely increased numbers Of students in all the Seminaries, a cornmendabli degree of diligence on the part of profeserors and students, a lively piety and great exertion for the salvation of souls. They, report and lament the death of Dre. Janeway and Carnahan, directors of Prince ton, Mr. Samuel Laird, of Danville, and Mr. J, W. Hughes, a student of Allegheny. The en dowment of the fourth professorship at Alleghe ny was progressing, and by the liberality ot a Christine body additional buildings were being put up. There was a loud call for means to endow professorships and erect buildings at Danville, which the committee recommended that the Assembly should press Upon the atten tion of the church'. Three new scholarships bad been founded at' rinceten and one at Alle gheny. A request fo the readjustment of titles and departments of / instruction at Princeton, Dr. Hodge to occupy his present chair without change, Dr. McGill to occupy the ohair of Church History and Practical Theology, Dr. tinier the chair of Oriental and Biblical Literature, and Dr. Alexander the chair of Hellialistic and Biblical Greek and New Testament Literature. The committee recommend that the changes be made. The trustees of Allegheny Seminary request-that the term shall hereafter close on the Wednesday preceding the fourth Tuesday in April. The chair of Pastoral Theology at Danville being vacant, by reason of the declination of Dr. Strat ton to accept, the committee recommend that the election be the 2d order of the day for Sat urday morning. The following gentlemen were proposed as directors for Nur years of Allegheny Seminary: Ministers, C. C. Beattie, S. lileFar. land, John Robinson, -H. G. Comings, Joel Stoneroad, K. Hill, J. B. Brownaon ; Elders, Malcolm Leech, J. Schoonmaker, Wm. Dickson. The report was accepted and adopted. The Vacant Chair at Danville..—Mr. Mont gomery, of Missouri, nominated Dr. Wm. L. tireckroridge, of Kentucky, No other nomina tion was made. [Jr. fireekinridge wished to say that the mo t taint was an extremely delicate one to him. lie could scarcely sit still and allow the matter to proceed without saying something, and yet he knew not what to say ; but this he would lay, he had been spoken to for several months past in-regard to it, but he has cot felt that be could see his way clear in the matter. lie wished the Assembly to do what it wished, and he hoped to arrive at a wise decision in so solemn and re sponsible a question. The Assembly then engaged in prayer for Di vine guidance. TGr Order or to f Day—Buol. of Disciplau The order of the day being announced, Dr. 'Dee moved that it be postponed, in order to boteh the matter of the location of the North- West Seminary. Dr. Stevenson hoped the thing would not be pressed through. Wo want pence Let tter take plenty of time. lie moved to lay Dr. Mice's motion on the table. which woo done by a close Dr Thornwell, of tho Committee on Revision of the Book of Disciplioe, addressed the Aseem- Hy The committee hare attempted to improve the old book, r. 71, by striking off redundances; ~, , ,,I, by bringing out explicitly what in the old book was implicitly eel forth: thus, nothing shall be considered heresy but what goes con. !retry to the confession of Faith and theLite chime, which was before taken for granted, but not positively stated: so as to forms of recess, distinct principles have been brought, out. There ore three principles upon which the re- Vialon hue been made. First, that all our courts are taricily and properly courts and not parties at the bar, called on, in the natno of the Lord Jeet. Christ, to decide and administer. The old book makes the inferior court a party to de fend to decisions before the higher court.. This principle is wrong because It is false in (act. It contradicts also our prisusiple of government by representative assemblies. T.O a case goes from representative body to re esentative body tutu it 1 esober thir eupre oatory. ruder the old book the app . -1 :synod in ono l, regiou to a part of the 83 nod ;d not to all the Synods In , tsoternhly met We eve no right to t .dude the lower court. The ktisa g e proposed Is a radicul change, but it Is a relsonable change. The most important changes made in judicial proortstes torn upon ibis . Another principle introduced is that the in dieprusable condition under which alone a man become, subject to the discipline of the church to a previous profession of faith. Those who ;topes this ray it is not logical. . Now, he would ask, why 04411 not the baptized members be ad mitted to the Lard's table, the eldership and the ministry, as well as be subject to discipline, while not profeesing their faith. Why do you rtelude them from the communion' Because they are not fit to go there, from a want of faith. PrecieelyThe same objection holds against the discipline. Are we ready to take the ground that the bap tized members are'membera by profession! Such is not the doctrine we hold. It would lead no to the Baptist ground. The parental relation is the tie that binds them to the church, and we govern them only through that. To what peed tion does infant baptism bring the child? 'ekes the broad senarvii..... lb ,- ._ -road separation in the ()moult of grace between the church and the world. It separates between the Jew and the Gentile. Bap tism gives the peculiar right to the Inheritance of the promises. While it confers these privi kgee, it imposes obligations far header than rent on the unbaptized world. Then it is the parents' duty to press these obligations and priji- Gegen on the child. Suppose now these 0061- here grow up and do not make profession• Whit, turn them out for not being converted? o oh, n o ! hear with them patiently, urge their own peen liar privileges and rceponslbtlities—use the or dinances of God to bring them in. Put them on molly the mama footing as professing ncem herr, and then bring them under discipline. Now, what will be the result of this on unregenerate men: It will drive them away In anger and dis gust, or it will - drive them into the communion without change of heart. This will deaden the church, as it has done the church of Scotland. The present practice of our ohurch ignores the principle. Thu °the priooiple on which the rerieiou has proceeded is the opening of a back door to the church, by which members may withdraw from it. The very glory of the church is that she is a voluntary society, and God wants no worship pers but voluntary worshippers; and the church no members but those who voluntarily come up to the profeeelon of faith. And to those who do not feel thus, she says withdraw. Ur. Wilson, of Georgia, moved that the report of the committee be received. The same gen tleman moved that it be sent down as an over ture to the presbyteries, who shall shall send up their answer to the Assembly through the stated clerk. Dr. Humphrey, of Kentually, wan favorable to the motion, and believed the Whole matter should be recommitted. He referred to the history of the work of revision. In 1785, seve ral committee@ were appointed to examine the Confession, Form of Government, etc., and to prepare a Book of Discipline, with forme of pro-. cm. After two yeara, the committee reported a Plan of Discipline and Government. That committee was composed of the most worthy fathers of the church. After eight days' con sideration, the report was sent down to the pres byteries for their advice. In 1788 the answers came back, and the Synod, after four days consideration, adopted the plan and then ordered it to bo sent down to the Preebyteriee again to be approved. So care ful were our fathers to lay the foundations of the church's discipline, how shall we in a few hours decide radical al:engem, which affect mat ters of faith In 1816 in was the judgment of tee church that another revision was neoessary. Dre. Alexander, Romeyn and 'Miller were ap pointed a committee. In 1817 - Dr. Ellphalet Nett wan added to it. In 1818 the committee reported they had made some progress. In 1819 the report was printed and sent down to Pres byteries to make euggestlone to the committee. The final report was made in 1820, and after an attentive examination of four days, it was adopt ed, and that was the book of discipline which has governed the church ever since. Shall this Assembly now upset this work in a day or two? The Dr. attacked at considerable length the change made in regard to baptized members, to the effect that they are =abject to "the govern ment and training" trusteed of "discipline" of the church. He proceeded to show a gradual, sub de, lurking and most pernicious heresy hoe been creeping into the church. In 1811, the number of baptisms was 200 to 1000 members; in 1860, only 61 to 1000. In the New School Church, the number is only 26 to 1000; in the Congregational only 16 to 1000. There these new tangled notions prevalL As to the withdrawal provision, in the' Assembly of 1861, this very question was decided Ina Judi e-flit cue—that • man's obligations to the church wire made stet with the church, but with his Gear and that .the church bas .no right to open a &ni ides* tof withdpvil;: ). . . Several intelligent gentlemen who have arrived *that route, told me they themselves were so long on the way—over sand and hills, and with out a road at all, that they were reduced almost to starvation, lived ten to fourteen days upon prickly pears and such few wild onions and oth er edibles no they could pick up, and also that they helped bury several persons who died from starvation. Tho agent of the stage company brought no in word that he picked up a starving man some fifty miles from here, (or an Amapa hoe Indian brought him to the stage line, l who had come across from the Smoky hilt route, which hie company had started on, and tried to follow;) that when found, he was in a most wretched condition, and reduced to a skeleton from starvation. Ills name is "Slue, and be is from Whiteside county, Illinois. There were three brothers of them: first, one died, and the two remaining ate from his body, after they had been rendered senseless from emaciation. The second brother died and was nearly eaten up by the survivor. The stage agent went out and buried the remains of the neoond or youngest of the brothers, but could not find the remains of the first, who died. A man named Gibbs was the leader of the starved company. Gibbs got in, nearly starved, and supposes the reel, some nine in all, perished. The survivor was left at one of the mail stations, and the report is con firmed by the stage passengers. Others report large numbers of graves on tho route, and that many oxen have perished and much property been destroyed and abandoned on the way. I saw one party which loetsoven out of a train of sixteen oxen. By receipt of papers from the States 1 per ceive that the tide of emigration hitherward is very great. The number of arrivals here to day and for the past few days shows an increase, but the tide seems to me equally strong in the homeward bound direction. Most, or very many of those now returning, go by skills, dug-outs, se., upon the Platte, the water of this river be ing now in a good navigable state, down stream, for such craft. I have a fiat boat built, and propose launching it this morning, and may beat the stage, which carries this letter, as the current is about six to eight miles an hour. I may be carried to the bottom, however, as it is somewhat dangerous. About fifty boats of OLIO kind and another have sailed in the past week, with an average of four or fire persona in each. It is estimated that 2500 persons have left hero for home in the last twenty days. This Is in ad. ditto's to those who turned back before rraching here, Induced by the Intelligence received from others on their return. Probably as many more reached here in that time; but I think there are no more people in the whole mining country to day than there were on my arrival hero a month ago. CAFTIfIIif OF TUE SEPOT CHM, TANTIA TOPES, NEAR GOONA.—Nena Sahib having been driven out of British India, and taken refuge in the territory of Nepaul, the most formidable loader of the rebels left at large was Tantia Tepee, whose tactics were extremely dexterous, and whose strategic abilities were remarkable. Ilis political Influence was small, bat as a leader in guerilla contests, no chief among the rebels in the late war so effectually re-produced the old klahratta character. Although the Britlah troops In pursuing him, accomplished marches never dreamed of in times past, Totals Tepee still kept ahead of them. The London Times, which eeema disposed to do justice to the military talents of the Tepee, in ono of its editorials has fallen into the error of attributing his capture to the ener gies and combinations of the British Command ers. No credit whatever is due to the British com manders for the capture of the rebel chief. Ile was the victim of treachery on the part of a cred itor of his paymaster. The creditor followed Tepee's party of marauders far the purpose of obtaining payment of his debt from the paymas ter, as soon as he should find him In funds. The paymaster was killed at liajghur, and then his creditor called upon Tornio Tepee for his debt. Tantia pat him off with promises, and the creditor at last had to return home without his money. Tantia, with only thirty followers, without money, and in a truly forlorn condition, sought a retreat near Gomm, which happened to be in the vicinity of the residence of the perse vering but disappointed creditor. As 80011 as the creditor learned of his arrival, he wrote to Sir Robert Hamilton offering to betray him for the pride eet upon his head, and the amount of his claim upon the paymaster, which had been assumed by Tantia. The creditor's overtures were acted upon, and Tantia was captured, and handed over to a dram-head court martial. COSTS or TLIIGOVIB3II3I2I.
