The Exceation
Yeartransr the prison pall of our city was
ithe scene of one of those terrible vindication's- of
!the majesty -of the law, -which transpire only
too frequently for the honor and credit of
tweitity-.we allude to the piCnishment of Jacoby
and Evans for the grime of murder, by death on
the scaffold. For the details of this solemn
scene we refer the reader to the local columns of
this paper. The tragedy enacted on that mel
ancholy occaelon was not only fraught with ter
rible letrUne to the hardened criminals, who have
yetis their transgressions escaped the penal
ties of the law, but it addresses all who have
committed to them the cam and ineWuction of the
youth of the country. It requires no great effort
of the imagination to bring to mind the period
when both those criminate who euffued an trio
, minions death yesterday were innocent children,
-the pride of their parents nod the very light of
their homer,' full of prowls° and hope for the
figure. If the panorama of their lives, frimi the
cradle, when they were no doubt the special oh
_Puts - of a fond mother's, solicitude, to the very
eteaffold, on which they stood as full grown and
hardened offenders, were laid before us, we
- than, probably, could detect the cause of their
fall, in what, at the time, may have seemed but
a alight error. It may have been some - act of
disobedienoe in youth unchecked—some passim),
at a later period, unourbe.i—or some transgres
sion slightly noticed, which . should hove been
seriously condemned. It is too often that, is
boyhood, the crimes of the man take root, and if.
net corrected with a firm hand, lead to a
degrading wit' an untimely death. It has been
truly . itiusuked that criminals do not leave the
nursery, armed ruinous to 'scourge and terrify
society. On the contrary, email misdemeanors,
with the lapse of years,- grow into fearful
crimes, and thus frequently transform tee truant
reckless school boy Into the cruel and red hand•
ed murderer, whose passions, neglected at the
critical period of his life, have mastered him in
his =truer years, and finally made him their
victim. _ .
The scaffold le but a melancholy missionary,
we grant, but its lessons on thit account should
1101 be permitted to fall to the ground. It is
cone of the goals' of a misspent and a reckless life,
ad often in asserting
,its claim to victims, it
bicerates innocent hearts, and buries under a
dark cloud the future prospects of many who
ex...'phre and without blemish" themselves. In
the death of Evans and Jacoby, the majesty of
the law bas been fully and fearfully -vindicated,
but the children of both these unfortunates are
left worse than orphans on a cold world. This is
the result of their fathers' crimes—not of the
punieluDent which tho law has inflicted upon
!him. In all our expressions of sympathy, Wm
truth should not be forgotten. The act which
deprived these orphans of a mother has indi
rectly bat justly bereft them of a father, who
bad ehown himself unfit to live among Christian
men!

was undoubtedly in the effort of the Austrians
to push their forces down to Allemande's, to
gain control of the railroad leading from Genoa,
where the French are disembarking their troops
to Turin, the point of their destination, that the
skirmish took place. We are left without par
ticular, of the repulse or the severity of the corn
' bat; but from the situation of the ground and
the importance of the object to be gained, We
expect to hear that the attack was a sharp affair,

New WRIAT AT TEM SOLTIL —Thus early the
Southern papers are beginning to notice samples
of new wheat. The Lexington (8. C.) Flag of
the 4th Intent !eye:
"This morning we reeeird a note with a couple
of wheat heads enclosed, which are ripe and
fully matured, and well filled with large and
plump grains."
The Augusta Constitutionalist eels
"We were shown on the 11th instant some
samples of very excellent and matured wheat,
cultivated en Mr. N. B. Bloore'e farm, near ads
city. We understand that Mr. Moore will com
mence cutting in a few days, and the crop will
be ground during the next week at the Granite
mills, in this city. The wheat crops in this
neighborhood appear generally very fine, and
will seen be gathered and placed on the market."
The Savannah Republican says :
"We yesterday sew a sample of new wheat
from the rice plantation of Dr. Daniel, near this
city. The tenth day of May for new wheat is
very early, and we suppose beyond precedent.
This wheat is the kind called Southern white.
and weighs 6'2 pounds to the bushel. It had
not been injured or affected by vast, of which so
much complaint has been made throughout the
State."
"Tux TILACT JOURNAL " is the title of a new
monthly paper, the issue of which has been com
menced by the American Tract Socdeiyist Boston.
This paper bears the same relation to the Boston
Society, that the "American Messenger" did to
the societies to :. , :ca York cud Boston, and the
reasons for its establishment are thus set forth
Since the recent change in relation of the two
societies, especially in stow of that enlargement
of their field and their work which Providence
has opened to the Boston society, It is Impossi
ble that said publication should adequately per
form this joint service any longer. Each needs
an t ergan of Its own, and ander its own control.
Separate henceforth in their operations, and to
a great extent in their policy and modes of busi
ness, it is obviously necessary that each should
have its separate medium of intercourse with its
members and the public.'
