SMOEISO A Canso or leessirr.—The terrible
ravages which tobacco is makiug on the minds
and bodies of the young seems to be attracting
theattention of medical men in various parts of
the World. In nlaruptilet just issued by Dr.
Beyinour, of London, on Private Lunatic Any
lutes, and the causes of insanity of late years,
the Doctor denounces with emphasis as one of
the producing causes the practice of immoderate
amoklig indulged in by boye and young men at
theittivereitimand 'larger schools, now called
colleges." The Doctor's remarks are as applica
ble to the youths of this country as those .of Eu
rope. No one conversant with disease can doubt
that (=tailor smoking, especially in the case of
yee D g people,-R net be highly injurious to mind
and body.--Its effect is to depress the circulation
—the heart becomes weak, irregular in its action
- and the ride is scarcely to be felt. The victim.
becomes irresolute and nervous, his appetite fails,
and.his mind fills with imaginary evils. This
may continue for years, but at length-the smoker
dias, oftea suddenly; then examination has shown
that the muscular structure of the heart is im
perfect in its action; the left side is thin, and
in some cases, in which sadden death has occur
red, there has been found little mote than a strip
of nutionlar fibre left on that aide. The ques
.
lion of restraining boys from smoking Is rather a
difficult one to deal with, but the grave inter
eats at stake seem to demand that some action
ahould be taken in the premises.
A Vier &mum.. INQUIRY. —The President's
organ at Vi'ashiagton, on Saturday, contained a
leader composed chiefly of Interrogatories, un
der the head of "What would the country gain
by the triumph of the Opposition!" It is very
natural that the President should be solicitous
to know what ids - successor will do; but be has
only to wait quietly and he will be sure to know
all about it. The Constitution imagines that when
the Opposition come into power "the moat at
rocious want of American patriotisM will be con
strued into merit." Atrocities of a similar char-
acter have so often had ouch a construction put
upon them of late that the country will not be
—startled from its propriety by the prospect of
snob a contingency. It innot novel enough to
be alarming.—N. Y. rtmes,
