THE FLOOD 111 Val, MIBBISSIPPI—ProbabIe
overflatoof Neu , Orleans:, We conversed yester
day, with a gentleman who had just returned
from the Ewing crevasse, near Raceland, about
forty miles from this city, an the opposite aide
of the river, The crevasse our informant elates,
is a vary bad ou •, and the track of the Opelousas
Railroad is for three miles under water. The
neighboring plantatiana 1480 Buffer severely from
ire effects The railroad company has a large
force of men at work, eetdeovoring to atop the
break, but from all that we cad bear, their la
bors have been ineffective, and until the river
declines the evil is not likely to he remedied.
We ehould state in Snake to the company, that
they hold out hopee to have the break closed
next week, but as the river is yet rising from
Baton Rouge down and will beagatn on the rive at
Vicksburg to a few days,•witen the effects of the
late freshet out of the Ohio and Upper Albeit's
ippi shall be felt there, We • cannot say that we
share this hope. The rains on the coast, also,
during the last forty-eight bourn, have been
heavy, and mug sericanty impede the work.
The river opposite this port is still rising,
though very slowly, and should we have more
!norm. a break in the levee between Carrolton
and this city may be looked for. We had a
strong stiff breeze nearly all day yesterday, with
a good many ahowerts, and at the time of our
writing this report ,(Friday, 7 P. w.,) the sky
looks threatening mere Storm and rain. Both
landings of the steamboat levee are covered to a
great extent, wl:h water, and below Canal street
the City Surveyor had to raise embankments—
they are of no very great height it is true—to
keep the water from encroaching on the dry
land. From the Bonnet Core crevatin we have
no further mown and presume that it is anyet
not closed. Excepting the injury it does to the
Jackson railroad and the neighboring planta
tions, the break there may be called a godsend
as it drawl off a part of the eurplas river water,
which will find lie way to the lake, thus din in
iehing the chances of an inundation in the city.
At Vickeburg, on the bib, the Mississippi wee
yet stationary, while at Baton Rouge, on the
same day, it was fire inches above the highest
water mark of last year. Regardiug the crevasse
at Lobilelf a store, the Baton Rouge Gazette
states that the water has not been checked in
its paseage through the levee at Lobdell's store .
From the nature of the soil, there is little hope
that it will be, fur the river, notwithstanding
the many crevasses above and below, is dill en
the rise at this point. About three miles of the
Baton Rouge, Grosso Teta and Opelousas Rail
road, is already under wider; the care have
stopped running, and it was with difficulty that
passengers got to tho river.
Oar friend, Captain Sellers, one of the oldest
pilots on the river, and now on the Wm. M.
Morrison, sends no a rather bad necount con•
corning the- elate of the river. Captain Sellers
is a man of experience, and though we do not
coincide In his view of the matter, ire give hie
notes place in our columns, only hoping that
his prophecy will not be verified in this instal:mei

Tut New York Evening Post in alluding
the blassaoh.etts election points out the gross
hypocrisy of the Democratic attempt to make
capital out of it :
-It is especially preposterous in the Democrats
of lassachusette to endeavor to fasten the re
sponsibility of the result upon the Republicans.
The Republicans were divided in opinion is re
gard to It ; many of their most conspinuoas men
and newspapers wore decidedly hostile to it, and
spoke and labored against it ; while the Demo
crats took little pains to bring about its defeat.
In the same towns in which the Democrats cast
last year 25,682 votes, only '.1.3C,7 votes in all
were cast this year, of which it may be safely
assumed that one half at least wore Republican.
I Thus, It would seem, that not one-sixth of the
Democrats entitled to vote attended the polls. If
! the amendment, as they allege, had been a par
ty measure, and if they were so atrongly op.
posed to it, os they assert, why did they allow
jitto be carried It was in their power, by join
. log their votes to thoseof the Republicans who
were unfriendly to It, to procure its defeat ; but
they failed to mike their opposition valid, and
so a email minority of individuals have been
enabled to succeed. Their Inaction in the premi
see may fairly be construed either into a silent
approval of the amendment as a judicious one,
; or into o grave indifference iu respect to the
question involved, and in either case they are
debarred from objecting to the result, as well as
from the right to turn it into "political capitaL"
TUN ANCIIICAN TRACT SOClZTT.—Wbuther the
American Tract Society Isbell publish tracts on
slavery for the North, where there is so slavery,
and of course they are not needed, and for the
South where they will be thrown lath the fire
with their leaves uncut, we submit for the deci
sion of those who delight in such profitable con
troversies. But we are quite decided upon one
thing, that the Society has no right to mutilate
the publioatione that it does issue. In "Gur
ney's Essay on the Habitual Exercise of Love to
God," occurs the following passage:
.•If this love had always prevailed among pro
hosing Christians, where would have been the
African attire trade—where the arduous system
whioh pertnita to roan a property in his fellow.
man ?" /to.
The Tract Society substitute for this inquiry
the following
.4 Where the torture, of (he inquieSion—where
every eyetem of oppression and wrong by which
he who has the power revels iu luxury and ease,
at the expense of his fellow men!"
This le moat disgraceful; utterly unworthy of
a literary, not to may a religious society. The
Traot Society may publish the Essay or not, it
hes no right to mutilate it..—Proo. Jour.
FIDES IN TUB Prscs.--A destructive fire was
raging in the Pines, in Medford and Evesham
township', Burlington county, last week. It
started on Tuesday. near Pendleton, about a
mile and a half South of Marlton, and extended
over a large district of territory to the vicinity
of Ballinger's and Weenie's Mille. On Satur
day and Sunday last, the fire was at its height,
and it woe with some daculy that the names
were prevented from communicating to reifieds
building in the above neighborhood.
At Croon Heys, Burlington Co., a eohool house
situated nee. the woods, came near being dos.
troyed,it having caught fire three different times.
At the latest ace - bunts the fire wee nearly sub

further damage would be done. A saw mill and
dwelling how!e were burned on Sunday, in Bur

ten miles in length.,-Newerk dfcreurp.

at Milan a few days ago, at which, among the
numerous toasts drank in allusion to the impen

"To the Austrian army! The Pruett and Pied

SODDEN ADDITION TO THE NATIONAL WIALTIL
—There arrived yeserday at this port 3,717 im
migrants, men, women and children, all of them
from Northern Europe, and all of them belong
ing to the laboring classes, who are accustomed
to hard work and frugal living. They were
brought over in eight ships, seven of them being
American. They are not mere birds of passage,
who come here to tarry a while and then flit
back to their own homes, but they have brought '
their honeebold goods and gods with them, and
will here Make their abodee. The greater part
of them start immediately for the West, and
many of them will aesistat the gathering of the
next harreex
Now if a newly imported African, who is ut
terly ignorant of all the arts of civilised life,
who cannot understand a word of English, is
worth to a Georgia planter five hundred dollars,
these intelligent, hard-working mechanics and
farmers, who will require no overseer or Instruc
tor. and , whose servloes can be made immediate
ly available, must be worth to themselves at
least double the amount, no that the actual ad
dition made to the wealth of the country by their
arrival may be estimated at $3,717,000. The
only drawback to this estimate is that eons
seven hundred of the number are deluded prose
lytes of blormonism, and are destined to increase
the population of Salt Lake City. About three
thousand more immigrants Oro now on their way
to this port (rem Liverpool ; the emigration from
Liverpool, Bremen, and Havre is mush greater
this Spring than it has been before in two years.
There will be plenty of work for them all when
they arrive, if they come prepared with means
to take them to the grain producing region of
the West.—N. Y. Trib.
"ALLIMANDIIIA."—TbIe place, the rendezvous
of the Sardinian Array, whither the King has
gone to take command, is probably destined to
play an important part in-the coming war. It to
a fortified city near the eastern frontier of Pied
mont, whose grins bristle towards the Austrian
territory. It stands in the midat of a sterile plain.
It is the great stronghold of Piedmont, and Is to
the Sardinians what Gibraltar in to the English,
or Sebastopol wee to the Susanne. Daring the
reign of the French in Italy, its formidable for
tifications made it one of the strongest places in
Europe, but these were eubsecineotly demolished
leaving only the citadel. Within the pest few
years workmen have been buy in reconstructieg
them, in anticipation of the events now at hand.
In the surrounding plain, two miles distant, In
Napoleon's celebrated battle field of Marengo.
Meseandris is garrisoned with mural thounand
troops, and being connected with Turin and Gen
es by railway, any number can be readily con
centrated there. To capture It would be a
crowning glory to the Auetrian Generals, and
to lent+, a deep humiliation to Sardinia.—Alb
