are well founded,

Ipaigu, whether Austria will remain on the offen
sive or content hereelf with protecting her Italian
Poeseesiona whether Gene. Hems and Gyulai will'
march on Turin and besiege Allessandels, or
fall book on the eyetem of Lombard fortresses,
which Khan been the work of forty years to con
struct. Two courses are open to the Austrian
Government. The oriels to do no more than
enter the Picdmonteso territory, and thus com
mit a formal ant of wee, for the purpose of bring
leg matters to a crisis, and forcing France and
France's allies to declare themselves. This step
would not preolude the generalplen of the Cam
paign from being. defensive, the invaoion being
political and not a military movement. The
other plan Is likely to find much more ftworitith
a youthful Emperor, and an army sore with pro
voutlins. It is, of course, to press on with
every available baltalitin to destroy, it possible,
the Sardinian army before the French eau come
up; to crush the latter as they descend, weary
and disordered, from the passes of the Alpe, in
fine, to carry out such a campaign as the Great.
Napoleon would have done if; be had had 120,000
men in line, and bin enemy's capitalised been
only 80 miles away.
Whether this bold policy will be adopted is
more than we can pretend to say. The Auotri
ass have shown such contradictory qualities In
their military history that we hare no means of
judging how they will act on the present occa
sion. They may exhibit the elownees and pe
dantry of 1798, or the energy 0f.1849: Another
week may see them patrolling Turin, or giving
orders fur the abandonment of Milan. A few
days sines they might have struck a heavy blow;
baby the Wednesday before Easter it was known
that the ultimatum was to be presented, and
within 24 hours the French began to move. Then
came the throe days of grace, and consequently
the French gained nearly a week, to the disad
vantage of their opponents. Yet even now a
bold General mtgbt doa great deal before a suffi
cient body of French troops could come to the
assistanoe of their allies. Between the Austria*
frontier and Turin the country is a plain; thee&
are no obstaeleato an enemy's marsh, and Vie
tor Emanuel would bounder the cruel necessity
of abandoning his capital, or fighting a desper
ate battle with inferior foram against - one of-the
most completely equipped armies of the conti
nent
In thei event, however, of such determined too
tles, it is probable that the Sardinians will sacri
fice everything - to the paramount necessity of
saving their army. They would, no doubt, fall
_hack on Alessandria, and from this base await
the aseistance of the French troops, who are be
ing rapidly transported to Genoa. We may
presume Ahat-by this , time !Como 40,000 Sardini-
Ana era concentrated at Alesoandria, and that
the rester the army are retreating before the Aus
trian'', endeavoring ea much ea possible to avoid
a collision. The question of greater importance.
however, is the movement of the French armies;
and here we must pay a tribute to the nation
which was oo lately our ally.' Frencluaeo may
not be superior to Germans, they are not cer
tainly equal to Englishmen in straugtb, cedar
aoce and qualities which--courage being sup
posed equal--ii.re likely to decide the fate of bat
tles. Bat in the great military quality of prompt
nese they are without an equal.
The manner in which the French' troops have
been dispatched to the Alps einoe Good Friday 41
good for the study of our officers. The very eat I
of entering a railway carriage and disposing of
hie knapsack and his musket has been taught the
soldier As part of his drill. We may be assured
that nothing that energy, evince and ekill can
atiComplish for the speedy ooncentration of French
armies at Turin and Genoa will be neglected.
But - the difficulties in the way of the Emperor
Napoleon's troops arc not few. The season is
backward; Mont Cenis is covered with snow.
The vast army of the French has been pushed
forward without preparation, the commissariat is
deficient, the country they enter is poor, there is
vary little of last year's earn to be had, and this
yeses will not be fit for the harvest for three
months at the least- In this case there Will be
no making the war support the war. Louis Na
poleon roust, to a great extent, take his previa
ions with him, or pay for what by requires out
of the funds which his obsequious Assemblies
have voted.
Then, there is the lose which inevitably at
tends rapid marches In such inclement regions,
and it may be predicted that the ambulances
which follow in the rear of the army .will have
plenty_of commis before -the plains of Pied
mont are reached. Bat there is, on the other
hand, a more favorable picture. The French
have the command. of the sea. It. maybe said,
with confidence, that if France could only reach
Italy acttoss the Alps, the Austrians might seise
the teotintry and crush each division as it cm
erged from the passes. But the town and harbor
of Genoa, almost impregnable, are in tho bands
of the tiardinians; we may say, indeed, in the
hands of the French. French troops are arriv
ing daily, and Ina few days, these will constitute
anareny, which, in -conjunction vith the fiardin.
fans at Aleseandria, will be too formidable to be
left in the rear of an invading force.
If there be one thing which especially shows
the military genius of the French, it Is their
transport of troops by sea. In the Russian War,
while we had our Himalayas and Jasone, they
had only their own little trading vessels, most
of them engaged in their Channel "sabotage."
Yet In every little brig, which probably had till
within a few menths before traded between Bt.
lade acid Shoreham-with eggs, the French man
aged to pack come 120 men, and send them 2,000
miles to Bevaatopol. Their- present melee-u1
•transport are immense, and the distance from
Tot:lank, Genesis hardly 800 miles. We can
not doubt that in a few days 80,000 French will
hare joined the Saidloians at Alesiandria, ens
then. it is hardly likely that the.Anetrien cam
menders will risk a march on Turin. Without
Teetering to predict the course of events, we
may eay that unlees- there be newe within 98
hours that the Austrians are before the Sardini
an capital, we shall believe that they hare de
termined to limit themselves to that defensive
warfare for which their position gives them so
many advantages.
