Tux Maur Tswana Or Women. —Th e Church of England Review has an article on female edu cation, from which we take the following pas sage : Much romaine to , berdono in winnowing out of people's minds ridiculous ideas of a certain purely factious sly of living, without which it Is impossible to keep house. There are plenty of young men who bave to unlearn the foppery of expenses diaprottortiened to their means, and the !sordidness of luxuries which feed, not self respect, but gluttony sad pride. The possibili ty must be secured to daughters and younger sisters growing to be rational, appreciative com panions; girls who, if they are ever married, will choose and value their husband for what, he is, and be interested in his calling and his op portunities of observation—yeomen who will es timate the grave and sweet realities of wife and motherhood, beyond any accident of precedence of superfluity. By dismissing false and foolish notions of respectability, by refusing the cheap fascinations of a paltry education of display, by discountenancing restraints misdirected or too rigorous, by cultivating an intelligent and un assuming mode of Intercouree, by a careful fore eight In assisting young people to prepare them selves for the exertion and 008 i of one day being the centre of a peaceful, hospital home; in these nod other ways much may Do done to re move obstructions to that gradual acquaintance and that unaffected respect and attachment *blob lead on to.a happy marriage. In the mean time it will be well to think, with not only the sympathy, bat the veneration they deserve of many among those who will never marry to assist in multiplying the too few occu pations suitable to woman, or to open to them ; above all not to preach, by implication or other. wise, that woman's' life need never be dwarfed to a negation, or consumed miserably away, by causes completely out cif ber control. There are women strong enough to keep their footing in the world singly, without a lost of womanly dig nity and sweetness, and to organize around them hie moral eleinents at all events, of an in dependent existence. They whose steps ere feeble need the mere to be helped rather than hindered In theetruggle with their fainting and more yielding self. If they fall here, la it at ell certain that in wedded life their lot would have been auspiciois? . Alm'. how many a faltering will has been bent and 'liven" beneath !sangu ine, unfulfilled resolutions to reclaim and human lee the husband Who bas pulled the wife down instead to his own mean and wretched lave. Marriage is not a lottery, but it is mete wilful blindness to forget that in all he higher aspects it may be irefully turreted or appallingly de based. The harmonies of a developed and transfigured womanhood have bceneet many a time to other music than that of wedding-bells. She who is enthroned neve., under any roof, in a mother's holy sov ereignty, may earn the right, in many a house, of compelling eery soul to love her. She will create or find an atmosphere in which to keep unwithered "the heart out of which are the is sues of life." tier hands will redeem the time, and her brain not be idle. Tan Salt Latin correspondent of the St. Louis Rpul2iran, under date of the Bth ult., says that the excitement there has somewhat abated, and that this is attributed In part to the knowledge the Mormons now have albs practical workings of the Jury law passed by the late Legislature, It being a complete bar to the punishment of any crime committed by the Mormons. Under this law the Clerks of the Mormon County Courts select the Grand and Petty Juries of the Federal Courts and such restrictions are imposed RR disqualify every Gentile in the Territory. The rupture between the Judiciary and Execu tive Is stated to be open and Irreconcilable un less the Governor yields, which he•will not do; and if the Administration moves in the matter determined to the Judges, they will resign and publish a manifestodiselosing darker and blood ier scenes than any heretofore exposed. The 31LISTIMPTI AT New ORLIWIEL—The sissippi being now higher in front of this city than ever before known, and being evidently hungry fore frolic through our streets, the con dition and behavior of the said famous "Inland sea" is naturally the chief topic of town talk. The river having spilled ever the levee in differ ent parts of the oily, and aroused a general state of apprehension, we yesterday took a ride along the city front and noted the general ap pearance of things. Oar route of observation began at the Stock Landing, in Jefferson City, and ended below the Barracks, in the Third District. The result of our whole observation was that the Fourth District was seriously menaced by overflow, the upper put of the First District al most,as bad ; the Second District less menaced thanwither of the first named ; and the Third District menaced least of all. The Surveyor's gang of laborers are hard at work, Tubing dirt-ridges wherever .the rising waters soonest call for them. A rise of one foot more in the liver would over-run not only three fourths of the whole city front, but the dirt-ridges now made and being made. We understand that on Wednesday the levee broke at the Vinare plantation, below the city, and for a time threatened an extensive crevasse; but that the neighboring negroes were put to work at it, and were working with strong proba bilities of mimes. Another crevasse on the other side of the river, twelve miles below Algiers, Is reported to us; but we have no particulars concerning it. The threatened crevasse at Holliday's above Carrollton, is not so threatening DOR as it was dentlemm who were up there yesterday inform tte that the levee had been to all - tappearance made strong enough to hold its ground, and that the alarm around there had considerably subsi ded. Twenty thousand feet of lumber was ship ped up there yesterday, on a steamer, by Mayor Stith, and that will finish the work of securing the levee so far as human aid can avail. It le distinctly elated up there, that bat for the lum ber left from the work at Sauve'e there would have been a crevasse as disastrous to the city as the Sanyo crevasse was is 1849 —N. 0.
