A coan.e twonnesr of the New York Tribune
gives the following intensely interesting story,
as au instance t hut cases abound in our own time,
more apposite to the Washington tragedy than
the desert life of the Patrifirche could be made
to afford. The striking point of this case, la in
the noble conduct of the ,injured Count, which,
although it may be lost Ppm the actor in the
present tragedy, yet it will nerve to ehow how
the feelinge of an elevated sentiment may be as
suaged, without imbruing the hands in the blood
of another, or violating die lawn which it is our
duty to preserve.
'•ln 1847, only twelve rare ago, an English
nobleman, Sir William Paget, renowned in the
hest society of London for bin eminent crnditioo,'

and ohs married him, as young girls often do,
more for respect than for the deep love she felt
for Count Itethleo. Notwithstanding, both lived
a happy family life in the old immense feudal
e.mtle of the Bethieus, near Claurensburgh. Sir

bluer ODD SKUNK AKIN DlD.—The high price
of skunk skins has given an unwonted activity
••Down fiast" to the pelts of "Connecticut ea
aeuce pedlars, - as have been shown hereabouts .
What their intrinsic value is generally, we do
not know, but the value of a particular ono our
renders can appreciate, when they read farther.
In the town of Washington, Litchfield County
Ct , a few weeks since, cue democrat stole from
another Democrat a skunk skin. The man
robbed applied to the grand jury of his town for
a presentment against the thief. It should be
borne in mind that the grand jury of anounty
is apportioned to the different towns, no that
each town has a certain number who serve for a
given limo on the grand jury, and through these
township members complaints reach the full
board. Well, the members of the Jury living iu
Washington were democrats and for three ses
sions of the jury neglected to present the skunk
skin matter, giving as a reason to the democrat
who lost the akin, that it was not policy to pros-
acute the matter until after election, as it was a
close town and the party needed all their votes
This excuse, however, availed but little with
the owner of tho skin; he demanded justice, but
oried in vain.
Out of all manner of patience ho related his
grievances to his neighbors, who sympathised
with him, and five Democrats and himself, on
election day, voted against the Democratic ticket
because the democratic township grand jurors
refused to enter a complaint just before election
against a brother democrat.
But, mark the effect. In that township Messrs.
Logan end Hatch, Republicans,, , were elected
Represontutives—one by three votes and the
other by Mx votes. In that Senatorial District,
the IGth, James Bird of Bethlehem, was elected
by only six votes. The one skuuk skin sent
three members to the Legislature of Connecticut.

AN EDITORIAL •SALAMASDLL—Captain Bus
slere, of the New Orleans Courier, who was shot
last week by his partner, Mr. Vernon, is now
in a fair way to recover. The Crescent eays this
is hut the latest of a series of disasters, which
show that. the Captain boors a charmed life.
In 1828 he commanded a chip in the Egyptian
service, and at the battle of Navarino his ship
was blown up and himself badly wounded. Re
turning to his waive country, he engaged in
naval Service on the Gulf of Mexico, and was
engaged In the attack on Porlo Bello. There
ales hie chip was blown up, and himself again
wounded. At a later period, he wan yachting in
the Golf, one slay, and hailed a ship and board
ed her to obtain supplies. There being rumors
of pirates at the time, his yacht was mistaken
for a pleats vessel, and himself for a pirate.
Under this mistake, the crew of the ship as.
- • • . .
saulted him as soon as ho stepped on board, and
boat him down with merlin-spikes, billets of
wood and other missiles, breaking several of
his bones, and leasing him senseless and bleed
ing on the deck. For this mistake he afterwards
instituted euite in the United States Courts, and
recovered all the damages he claimed.
REMARK/LIMN lax-Fonunrion.—A emespon
dent of the Boston Transcript tells the following.
"The latter part of last November, Mr. Andrew
Twombly, of Brandon, Vt., commenced to dig a
well near his house, Winded about a mile from
the centre of the village of Brandon, on a tol
erably level plain. Having excavated to the
depth of fifteen feel, through sand and gravel,
the workmen came to ground frozen Build,
through which they-continued to excavate the
further distance of fifteen or sixteen feet before
getting through the frozen ground. At the
depth of forty feet sufficient water having been
obtained, the well was atoned in the usual man
ner. The character of the ground was the same
throughout the whole distance, viz., coarse
gravel and sand—the frozen portion interspers
ed with lumps of clear ice. At the time the
well was dug the surface of the ground was not
frozen. Byer since the well was deg, up to the
present time, ice forms in the well and incrusts
the stone at from fifteen to thirty feet from the
surface, - and the surface of the water, which is
thirty-five feet below the eurface of the ground,
freezes over every night."

taught to tease, very much as they are taught to

till ho understands and knows that the point is
Battled, and how it is settled. 11 you give him
no answer till he has spoken ten times, be will

to suspect that !peeking twenty times more will
obtain an answer more favorable to his wishes,
he will speak twenty times more.
And this will soon grow into a habit. Bat
give him an answer the first time he speaks', and
he will not be obliged to speak a second time to
obtain one; and never alter a decision for his
teasing and ho will soon give it up as of no nee.
If you have leisure, and the occasion seems a
proper one, you may let him argue his case be

if he has learned by experience that your de

AN OLD REVOLUTIONEIL —The editor of the
Paulding Clarion, while in attendance upon the
Perry county (Mine.) Court, met an old Revolu
tionary soldier, named Jeremiah Willingham,
who knew Waehington and Jefferson well, and
was at the battle of Eutaw Springs, and many
other of the hardest Males of the Revolution.
lie voted for Jefferson for President, and is now
one hundred and two years old. His last mar•
tinge was contracted at the age of 77 years, and
PO years have elapsed since his first marriage.
lie is still hale and hearty, can mount a horse
with ease, and can 'hoot a squirrel from the top
of the tallest tree with a ritle.
A Cyan you SItaaP•KILLING Dons.—A South
ern writer gives the following : Select the stout
est and most vicious old ram in your Sock, and
shear him close: then get a small Manilla rope,
thirty-five feet long, and tie one end around the
ram's neck, and the other around the dog's neck
and turn them Into a ten acre Geld, well cleared
of stumps, brush and corn stalks, and let them
remain two boors, and if that old ram don't
knock all the sheep-killing propensities out of
that dog, why then, as Samuel Stonestreet would
say, ''l hope I may never sea chinkapin lime
again." That dog will never have the courage
to look a cheep in the face again
A medical writer of celebrity illustrates his
subject as follows
..A devout singer in a church choir, lifting up

the coudyloid process to the very edge of the
glenoid cavity, and attempting to '',hAke" at
this critical moment. actually dielocated hie
The most t .t.tensive publicity should to given
of this remarkably curious and very melancholy
fart that hereafter singers in cur choirs may
never attempt to “shake" when their coudyloid
processes are at the end of their glenoid cavities'.
