CHUIIL MID UNUSUAL PUNISIIMur—Goer! Nor

the public' has not been informed that a sailor of
the United States chartered steamer Atlanta.
was "blotted from the ship's books," under the
following circumstances: Capt. Ridgely, of the
Atlanta, ordered the man's bead to Do 'hared in
punishment for some transgressiot The pallor
refused to permit this unprecedented course of
treatment, begging that bodily torture, however
severe, might be substituted for it. Captain
Ridgeir insisted on shaving every particle of
hair off, whereat tho man swore he would jump
overboard if the cruel sentence was carried into
effect. The hair was cut off, and the unfortu

and Lieut. Warrington for drunkenness. The
Court was in session when the Harriet Lane left.

TRATOBLI 00 TILIOPAPELLES 115 IHDIA.: The
telegraphers in India make great complaints, not
only that the rebels cat the wires, but that the
elephants and other animals rub against the
poets and prostrate them, while the monkeys, un
der a complete misapprehension of the object of
the telegraph system, delight to use the wires
for athletic ap arts and paetimes. Mr. Russel says:
"I have seen half a dozen great monkeys or ba
boons at work on One feeble stretch of wire,
posturing, grinning, and chattering away in the
highest spirits—some walking topstiurvy along
it, others tugging It up and down with main force
considerably increased by the circumstances that
other monkeys were banging on by their tails,
and others striving to detaoh the wire from the
posts, so se to give their friends a sudden fall;
white ants eat the base of the posts away; sud
den gnats of wind blow miles of wire and posts
flat to the earth."
TEJLEIS I
In addition to this it is hard to transmit the
messages in a smart, active, wide awake, and in
telligent manner, when the thermometer is rang
ing between 90 and 120 degrees.
THE Berrien Cons Timex—The weather of
the past week has exhibited a perfect contrast to
Its predecessor, the country having passed from
the depth of winter to the height of summer.
All vegetation bears witness to the rapid change,
but little or no damage to the growing crops
from the late intense frost, nor hes as yet been
reported, excepting apricots, do the fruit trees
show traces of serious injury. More rain is,
however, seriously necessary, to sustain the for
ward growth of the season; and the fair begin
ning may not' yield so productive a harvest as
required, half of April leaving us without the
usual showers. The Wheat trade as well as that
in Spring Corn, has been rather dull and droop
ing. The same fluctuations in the weather have
obtained in Northern Europe, with greater ex
tremes, making it doubtful whether some harm
will not follow. Still the markets there, like
our own, have been characterised by nothing
new, but the Portuguese Government have
thrown open the ports again to reduce prices.
—Mark Lane Es.
A New Comar.—James C. Watson writes to
the Detroit Free Press from Ann Arbor, with
date of April 23d, that he discovered a new
comet on the evening of that day near the star
numbered 17 Ia the constellation Lynx:
It right ascension is 6 hours 58 minutes and
80 seconds, and its declination 6O degrees and
57 minutes north. It has a tail about a quarter
of a degree in length, and the nucleus is as
bright as a elar of the eleventh magnitude. The
observations made this evening show that it is
moving west about two degrees, and south.one
degree and fifty minutes daily.
