Wits Wallas our. Snead—The musical CM
peter who really furnishes the great majority of
our songs, and whose productions hare the wid
est popularity among the masses of our people,
is known so very few of them, even by reputa
tion. The new melodies that greet the public
ear month after month, and are sung, whistled
and hummed by thoodsods—that are thumped
on pianofortes, thrummed on banjoes, breathed
on flutes, tortured into variations, and enjoy a
wide, though after all, evanescent popularity,
are chiefly the product of one fertile brain—and
that brain, se Mr. Micawber would Noy, is the
brain appertaining to Mr. Stephen C. Foster.—
The gentleman is a native of Pittsburgh, and has
spent oil his days there, excepting three years at
Cincinnati, and two at New York. Ile waaborn
on the 4th ofhtly, 1826, (the very year fhtit John
Adams and Thomas Jefferson died,) and Ls, there
fore, now in his thirty-third year. Ills father,
Mr. Wm. B. Foster, wars Pittsburgh merchant,
a member of the Slate Legislature, afterwards a
Mayor of Allegheny City, and subsequently oc
cupied an official post under the federal govern
ment. Ws oldest sister' id the wife of the Rev.
E. T. Buchanan, the only brother of the Presi
dent of the United States. Stephen C. Foster
id the youngest of his family.
Ile enjoyed but limited opportunities for mus
ical Instruction, and took but few lessors When
nineteen years old he composed for a social quar
tette club, of which be was a member, Ma first
successful song, the popular favorite, "Uncle
Ned." It was shortly afterward sung at o pop•
ulsr concert in Cincinnati, and received inch
applause that Mr. Wm. C. Peters, the music pub
lisher in that city, requeMed the privilege of
publishing it, which was at'once granted. Mr.
Foster next composed "Susanna," which was
more simple in its style, and became even more
popular. in a private letter, Mr. Fester writes:
••I bad up to this limo neither received par
thought of any pecuniary remuneration for my
eiroris in the magical line. Imagine my delight
therefore, on receiving far my next song one hun
dred dollars in cash! Though thin song was not
successful, yet the two fifty dollar notes which I
received for it had the effect of starting me in
toy present vocation of a song writeri'•
it would render this article too much like a
— catalogue of popular and standard music" to
give a bet of Mr. Foster's songs. "Massa's in
the Cold Ground," ••Old Kentucky Homo," "Hi!
Boys, Corry toe 'Lang," "Nelly was a Lady," and
"Old Folks at Home," may tot mentioned as
nmtog 010 most popular His "Susanna" mel
lady has been seized by many pianists,(among
•hom may be mentioned Hera and Thaberg) as
a melalie theme peculiarly suited for treatment
with variations, and' some of Um other negro
melodies have obtained an equal popularity.
Nor is this popularity merely is local one. la
many of the Southern States Mr. Foster's songs
hove been adopted by tholaves to enliven them
is their corn bookings field labor. Their
lamakwo_rzreeed ,g - a rivals
e • from one ortlir, 'spay returned from

Isud of Scotland, where imgs of Borne and
the older oral Scotch t ;' ;{e known to and
sung by every one, bllowing passage,
"I spent 'several we: ` ' the poetic hills of
Ettrick, along the arrow, so famed in
Scottish border and here I found
some of Foster's etrlit;" - friodies were almost
displacing, in the estimation of the shepherd boys
and cottage gide, the songs of Burns and Ram
say."
Often, in the Scottish coulees, after the bag
pipes bare droned out their accompaniment to
'Scots wha hue' and 'Lord Athol's Courtship,' a
voiedwill take up one of these American redo
dies, and all gathered around the Ingle sidewill
join in the simple refrain, and thus the plaintive
touchieg strains that are first sung in the dark,
sooty town of Pittsburgh, en the Monongahela,
rise away above the smoke and steam of city
life, float norms the Atlantic, and are heard up
on the heathery bills of &trick, and among the
kirks that grow upon the 'braes of Yarrow.' Fa
vorable mention lose also been made of them from
California, China, Australia and even the deserts
of Africa, through the foreign and home corres
pondence of our newspapers.
Ethiopian minstrelsy, aa it is called, has, how
ever, culminated, and io now in its decline. Ap
preciating this fact, Mr. Foster has lately some
what changed his style, and abandoning the nee
of Negro jargon, he now writes songs bettor ad
apted for general use. While the melodies ex
hibit a decided improvement, the words are
rythmicul, always unexceptionable in point of
moral, and as good, poetically considered, as the
majority of songs.
We do not-eay that Mr. Foster's. "melodies"
can be compared with those that hive immortal
ized the names of Burns, Barry Cornwall, or
Thomas Moore, but we do maintain that the
composer who produced such popular and pleas.
tog songs as "Gentle Annie," "Willie we have
Missed You," "Maggie by my Side," "I Bee
Iter Still in my Dreams," "Old Dog Tray,"
"Jeannie with the "Light Brown Bair," &c.,
deserves an honorable mention as one of those
who has enlarged the pleasure of thousands.
The reason of the popularity of Mr. Foster's
songs lies in their easy, flowing melody, the ad
herence to plain chords in the accompaniments,
and the avoidance of intricacy in the harmony
or embarrassing accidentals in the melody.
They have a family resemblance, but not greater
than the simpler melodies of Belllni and Danl.

To■ DYISO NMI/. WZIP.—It in a striking fset
—the dying weer weep. The circle of sobbitig,
agonised hearts around, produces not one tear.
Is it that he is insensible and stiff already in the
chill of dissolution t That cannot be; for he asks
for his father's hand, az if to gain strength in
the mortal struggle, and leans on the bresat of
mother, brother, or sister, with still conrcious
affection; and just before expiring at eve, after
a long day's converse with the Angel of Sum
mons, he says to hie oldest brother—the last an.
dible good night of earth—" Bins me, kiss me!"
It must be because the dying have reached a
point too deep for our earthly crying and weep
ing. They are face to face with higher and ho.
lier beings, with the Father in heaven, and his
angel throng, led on by the Son himself; and
what are griefs of a morning, tears of a dying
farewell—bo it that they &related by the dearest

and everlksting reunion !

VALUABLZ Auronaspus.—There are at pres
ent three, and so far as is known only three,
complete sets of autographs of the signers of the
declaration of Independence. These belong to
Rev. Dr. Sprague of Albany, Rey. Dr. Raffles of
Liverpool, and a South Carolina gentleman.—
They were completed by a curious piece of good
lack. Some years since, each of them gentle.
men lacked one autograph, which was nowhere
to be found. Bat in settling an estate, the South
Carolina collector came across three receipts of
bills, signed by this very individual. One ho kept
for himself, and sent the other two to De.Sprague
and Dr. Baffles. Dr. Raffles has hie in a beau
, Wally bound volume, and values it almost as he
' would the famous Koh-i-nobr. A wealthy Bos
ton merchant once introduced himself to him in
the street, and requested the privilege of seeing
this collection. He then told the Doctor that ho
wished to make a present to his native city, and
had seen nothing which eo pleased him for that
purpose as this set of autographs, and asked if
there was any sum which would induce him to
part with it? The Liverpool Doctor, however,
who is wealthy, and besides considers a first-rate
auteigriph a luxury greater than a miser's gold
heap—was not to be tempted. Netrboryport

KENTUCKY POLITIC/.--The Louisville Courier
. and Journal are both advocating. a Federal Slave
'CO° for the protection of Slavery in the Terri
tories. The race between them is as to which
shall be most ultra i that advocacy. The Jour
nal is ahead and the courier producing two heavy
fire-eating articles per day in the effort to catch
up, Col. thrum orthe Democrat, occupies the
popular sovereignty:platform, and defends it
with marked ability. hiagoffin, the Democratic
candidate for 43overnor, occupies substantially
the ground taken by Douglas in his Freeport
speech. He is a friend of the Vice President,
and his course is evidence that that high officer
of the government is opposed to the incendiary
slave code fanaticism. Bell, the Opposition can
didate for Governor, advocates the slave code
dogma—takee the "step in advance." The elec
tion of Magoffin would be considered a Douglas
triumph. These are carious developments for
old Kentucky.—Cin. Com.
BOOKS to JAPAN.—Whoever walks through
the streets of Japan, town or village, will be
surprised to notice the number of books exposed
for sale to almost every shop. Oa looking in
side he will probably find one or more of the at
tendants, if otherwise disengaged, busily read
ing, or listening to something read by one of the
company. In walking through the outskirts of
the town, it is not unlikely he will come suddenly
upon a knot of children, seated itt a snug corner
out of the way, all intently engaged in looking
through some story book or other that they have
just bought at a neighboring stall, and laughing
right heartily at the comical pictures which
adorn the narrative. The conviction is thus
brought home to a mau'e mind that the Japan
ese are a reading people.—London Arms
Ws hope Mr. Bell the Opposition candidate
for Governor of Kentucky, can fairly amend the
record mode on his behalf by the Louisville
Journal, In reporting his Lebanon speech. If
ho cannot, but is really in favor of a slave code
for the Territories, we do not believe the moss
of his own party will scuttaln him. Such a rye.
ord ought to be the political ruin of any matt,
and under each leadership, Kentucky moat
speedily become one of the strongest Adminis
tration States of the South. ' .
