TIIU METAL CROP Or TUE WORLD, -An
exami
nation of the crop of metals produced in the
great harvest held of our globe, leads to some
striking and interesting facts. Until the discoV
cry of the gold fields of Australia and California
the crop of precious metals throughout the world
maintained no uniform aproduction as the even]
or other crops, and oven since these discoveries
the rate of production, so suddenly and enor
mously expanded, has subsided into regularity.
The amount of glittering duet shipped yearly
front Sou Francisco, Melbourne and Spicier is
now as accurately estimated as cotton, isl-dat,
tobacco, or any of our great staples.
The value of precious metals produced per
annum in the United Slate, as compared with .
Europe, is estimated in round numbers in the
Encyclopedia Brittanica thus United Sistes,
sixteen millions of pounds sterling; Great Reit
ain, twenty millions ditto: the Russian Empire,
five millions; France only three millions: the
instrian Empire, leas that, half a million; Pros •
slit, a little upwards of four millions; llelgimu,
nearly two millions; Spain, a million and a hill;
Sweden and Norway, a million; Saxony three
hundred thousand; the Hartz District, tiitlicr
more and Italy considerahly less than hallo
million; and Switzerland only seventy-eight
thousand pounds sterling. The annual ay.-rage
of precious metals in Australia is put down at
1, 167; Mexico and Chili foot up about
nine millions sterling, and the rest et South
America, exclusive°, Chili, gives less than three
and a hall millions. According to this estimate
the grand total of the crop of precious metals
produced annually in Europe and America, in
cluding Australia, is nearly seventy-nix miiliona
of pounds sterling, in enact numbers Si ~;t4,, -

Mr. Whitney's table of The motalli.: produce
of the world for the year 11354, presents come
interesting facto. Russia in that year is supposed
to have produced 00,000 pounds troy of gold,
and 5.4,t51i, pounds Of silver. of copper she
produced 13,500 lons, 4,01.10 tans of zinc, SOO tons
of lead, and 200,000 tons of iron. The dispro
portion here between the precious and useful
metals is very_ striking, as mill he seen by a
comparison with Great Britain. The gold of
Great Britain In Isis 4 is estimated at Dm pounds
troy, miser, at 70,t , 00 pounds; tin, 7,000 tons ;
copper, 11,500 tone: tine, 1.1100 tone, lead, 6 1,-
mg, to.: and iron, 3,000,000 t ons . I n the dame
year, the Gutted Stater. inolailing California, is
supposed to have produced 201.1,000 pounds troy
of gold, 22,000 pounds of eilver,l,ooo, ooo pounds
avoirdupois of mercury, (Great Britain and pais
ma producing none at all), 3,500 tons of eiopper,
5,000 of zinc, 15, 0 00 of lead, and a minion of

comes Chill, with 14,000 tons of copper: then
Russia: then Australia and Oceanic», producing
2,500 tons; the Male in tho United States; Aus
trio, 7,800 tons, then the Bast Indies and South
ern Asia with 2,000 tons: and no on, Saxony
closing the list with bare fifty tons. France,
Switzerland, Mexico, and Brazil, It seems, pro
duce no copper Mall, at least none' is set down
in Mr, Whitney's table. Cuba produces 2,0(0)
lons, Africa only GOO tons.
Mexico takes the palm in silver, the product
of 1.551 amount:log to 1,750,000, pounds troy.
Chili ranks nexC at 250,000 -pounds; Ecuador
and New Granada are put down at 130,000
pounds; Bolivia the canto; Spain 125,000 pounds,
and so on; Brazil closing the list with only 700
pounds. Prusein and the Ilartz District yield
the same, 20,000 pounds each. Saxony gives
01,000 pounds; France, 5,1)0 pounds: Italy, Af
rica, the East Indies, Southern Asia and Cuba,
do not appear in the silver list.
In the gold column, we find the United States
tithing the lead at the head with 200,000 pounds;
next. Australia, 150,00 ii pounds; Russia as be
fore stated 60,000 poinds; East Indies and
Southern Amin 25,000 pounds; Ecuador and New
Granada 15,000 pounds:: Mexico, 10,000 pounds;
Brazil, 0,0100 pounds; Atistria 5,700 pounds; and
Africa 4,000 pounds. Spain brings only 42
pounds; the Hartz District gives but 6 pounds,
and poor Sweden a rniserable 2 pounds. Norway,
Belgium, Prussia, Saxony, Switzerland, France,
Italy awl Cuba, make no returns to (lie gold
column.
From Mr. Whitney's letter, it appears that
Great Britain takes the lead of the United Staten
not only in silver, tin, copper, and iron, but in
lead also. The Product of this metal for 1854,
in Great Britain, is set down at 61,000 tons,
against 15,000 tone in the United States. We
had supposed that the lead mountains of Mis
souri would have given a very different return.
Even Spain produces twice as much lead an the
United States, the yield in 18fr1 being put down
at 30,009 tons. Prussia produces 8,000 Lone;
the Hertz District 5,000 tons; Saxony 2,00(4 lone;
France, 1,500 tons; Belgium 1,000 tons; Italy
500 toes: and, lowest of all, Sweden 200 lone.
As regards the iron crop, we have seen Great
Britain and the United States heading the list,
the former with three and the latter with ono
million of tons. Franca comes next with 600,-
000 than; then Belgium 300,000 loon; Russia
200,000 tone; Prussia 150,000 tons, and en on,
Norway bringing up the rear, with 5,000 tons
The grand totals of the metallic produce of the
world for 1854, as eummed up by Mr. Whitney
are: Gold 479,950 pounds troy; Silver 2,812,200
pounds tray; Mercury 4,200,000 pounds avoir
dupois; tin 13,660 tons; Copper 56,850 tone;

Tun LORD'S Paarsu.--It ie not generally
known that the concluding ascription in the
Lord's Prayer, ("for thine ie the kingdom, and
the power, and the glory, forever,") as printed
in the common version of the Bible, ie probably
an interpolation. A correspondent of the Ad
vertiser, says :
"There are the strongest reasons for believing
that the doxology formed no part. of the prayer
as it was originally recorded by Matthew. It is
wanting in the most ancient and valuable Greek
manuscripts, and in several of the most import
ant ancient versions, as the Old Latln or italic,
the Vulgate, and the Coptic; and it is not recog
nized by the early Christian Fathers who wrote
the prayer, as Tertullian, Cyprian, Origea, Cyril
of Jerusalem, and others. We can easily under
stand how it crept into the text from the ancient
liturgies ;e steps of the process are traceable
in our pre ent manuscript espies, in many of
which it s nds in the margin only, while in the
t
others it iii written with red ink—but its omis
sion in the very ancient and independent author
ities from Which it is absent, cannot be reasona
bly explained on the supposition of its genuine
ness. The different forms is which it appears
in the document which contain it are an addition
al indication of its spurious character.
Such being the state of the case, it is i.
strange that this doxology Is rejected as an in
terpolatin by a very large majority of the meet
/
eminent 'rotestant critics and commentators, as
by Mill, Bengal, Wetotein, Grietbach, Kapp,
Schott, 11cornfield, Scholz, Lechmann, Tischen
dorf, Th ele, Alford and Tregelles, in their
editions o the Greek Testament ; by Luther, in
1 1
his cater isms, ?detonation, Zwiogli, Boner,
Grains, Walton, Rosenmuller, Kuinvel,Tholuch,
°Monsen, Do Write, Meyer, and Norton; by
Porter, Davidson and Green, in their recent
works en biblical criticism; and by a host of
other good Protestants of lesser note. Alrord,
in the third edition of his Greek Testament
(London, 185 G,) remarks: ..The doxology must
on every ground of sound criticism, be omitted.
We find absolutely no trace of it in early times,
In any family of MSS. or in any expositors."
As the doxology is wanting in the Latin Vul
gate version, made by Bt. Jerome in the latter
part of the fourth century, it is absent of course,
from the Roman Catholic translation. Oo the.
other hand, as it existed iu most editions of the
Greek Testament current in the sixteenth and
seventeenth centuries, these editions being foun
ded on modern manuscripts, it is not surprising
that It appears in the common version •

pride of the sea. Sir Cresswell Cress well could
not have dissolved that marriage more completely
than the railway has done. In olden time the
traveller was compelled to recognize it; and in n.
gondola from Mestro made a proper and respect
ful entry into the city. Now he merely gives
up his ticket there. If he has no fear of dust
or cinders in his eyes, he may, by craning out
of the earrings window, perceive the nparation
of a floating city, or a huge raft covered with
houses, right ahead; but otherwise the sensation
is that of being carried out to sea by an insane
locomotive. The lagoon streaches away for
miles en both sides, with nothing to break its
surface except a few ghostly looking piles, and
here and there a little island so completely built
over that ft looks like a fishing village that has
broken its moorings and gone adrift Cut the
train evidently knows what it is hbout, uLd
sweeps on in a contemptuous manner, as it it
had bean used to the sea, and did not mind the
puny little wares that are lapping fretfully
against the'bnttresses of the bride; until at the
end of some ten minutes there is a halt, and on
descending and looking about you find yourself
in the anomalous position of standing on a rail
way platform in the , Adriatic, two miles from
shore, and
under no obligation to gondola or
galley. Venice is rho longer insular; the right
of the sea to interfore between her and her visi
