INTERESTING ROMAN DIPXOVEILIES IN ENGLAND.
. .. .
—.A correspondent of the London Times given
s 'me interesting accounts of the antiquarian
discoveries made during excavations in Wroxe

limed to be on the site of the Roman Triennium,
and was one of the - earliest Roman elate in
Iltitein. The ancient limits are yet to be marked
by a coutiumno mound, covering the old walls,
and enclosing a space nearly two miles long by
one mite broad About the centre of the area,
write, the Twig., correspondent, a large mass of
Roman masonry, abovedvrenty feet high, and of
considerable extend stands above ground, and
has been known from time immemorial as the

quite east and west, and was separated in its
length by strong walls from a passage fourteen
feet wide ott each ride. At the eastermend of
the passage to the north were found two or three
te=selated pavements of very fine work, which
would e ,• e r n to hare belonged to small rooms.
The northein wall of this passage was evi•
dently the outside of the buildlog, as the work
men came upon a street running parallel to it,
and paved with small round stones, in the tnan•
nor of sonic of our old English towns To the
east of the passage .and large room a square
inclostire without pavement was found, which,
from the appearance of the walls, I imagine to
h tee been an open court. The passage on the
semb of the large apartment has the appearance
of an open alley, bounded part of its length by

Tor SiIVEHEOV , or Ennors.—humors of an
alarming nature are reported from abroad, says
an English paper, respecting the health of the
Emperor of Austria nod the King of Greece,
both of whom are said to shots symptoms of in
sanity. The King of Naples is still in a critical
condition, from the effects of a tumor. Ile is in
it savage mood, and the announcement of the
escape of the exiles to America does not proba
bly tend to improve his situation. The accourits

cud of Slay, has been again postponed.
A London journal, 'noticing Professor Rog
er's -Geology of Pennsylvania," observea that
the mean temperature of the entire State is
nearly 47', or about that of Great Britain. This
coincidence of mean temperature is not a little
remarkable when we contrast the latitudes of
the two countries, the mean of the one being
scarcely as high as Jatitude 41 0 , that of the
other being latitude 54 0 2.0 i and this fact is in
teresting, no shoeing why this portion of the
United States seems more congenial than any
other to the British, German, and other popu
lations emigrating to America from the north
temperate climes of Europe.

Ma. Gaa.man's Sexecu.—The Boston Courier
makes some remarks upon the opening speech
by Mr. Graham in the Sickles case, that appears
to us eminently just:
"The world has had Mr. John Graham by
telegraph for the last twenty-four hours. We
shall not consider ourselves rash, if wo venture
to say that a stranger opening argument has
never been made, even by a New York criminal
lawyer, than that of Mr. John Graham in the
Sickles trial, which at present tills the newspa
pers of-the country with its verbose farcial sol
emnity. Mr. Graham seems to be ono of those
fluent speakers of whom Campbell remarks, that
they have not so much command of
_language as
their language has command of them. No mat
ter how simple or axiomatic a statement is to be
made, he wreathes around it so many artificial
Bowers of rhetoric; he overlays it with so much
tawdry ornamentation, that the wearied mind
refuses to search for the hidden point. His ar
gument teems only adapted to a justice's court
of the time of Methuselah, when the life of man
was nine hundred years, for it is quite out of
proportion to the present allotted age of three
score and len. Passing, without comment, over
the absurd and impious argumens drawn 'from
the Bible—passing over his statement to the jury
that they were "to pronounce the estimate of an
American jury on the value of the marriage bed"
—passing over his comparison of the killing of
Key to the execution of the condemned Balti
more murderers—passing over his unchristian
remark, that to an injured husband there re
mains only suicide or murder—we must protest
in the name of the women of America against
the insulting estimate pot upon female chastity
and strength of virtue by the argument. Mr.
Graham.
Ho commenced by telling the jury that, had
Key not been slain, their own wives and daugh
terswould not have been safe; that they might
have been marked for seduction, and that they
would have been called upon to "satisfy the in
satiate appetite or the deceased." Ito then told
the twelve intelligent men before him that if an
action for damages was to be the only redress
against the adulterer, their wives lived in a very
perilous atmosphere, and they might as well let
the infamy come at once; ho next Mated that
woman was the weaker vessel, that her name
was frailty, and that the 'strong arm of her hus
band was neeeltd to restrain her within the paths
of rectitude; and so on, through his entire ad
dress, he was coustatly implying that the gener
al character of woman was such that a libertine
had only to beckon to her and she would follow
him with roger wantonese to her own destruc
tion. It is impossible for us to know from whom
Mr. Graham has gained his ideas of female vir
tue: but either his associations have been most
unfortunate. or elso his own nature is deplorably
incapable of appreciating the character of
woman. There is no fortress so impregnable
the citadel of a virtuous woman's heart; there 13
a power in the silent influenced female '71.'1 its
to make a strong man quail and become as as
infant. Are we to be told that lie only prob e,.
lion we have against the adulterer io heart is
the fear he has of the husband's avenging arm'
That our wires and sisters have no safeguard in
the purity of their own souls, lost that if cot'
physical protection isrremoved they will fail at
once into the palpable snare' The remarks o
the counsel referred to are insulting to the dig
nity of every virtuous woman in the land. fihaute
ou that man who dares to judge d female honor
by the conduct of that wife and soother who
would go from her husband'a housu at the wave
of a handkerchief to a place of deliberate assig
nation; and there gives herself to the embraces
of a paramour! As a compensation for weakness
of the body there is given to woman a strength
of soul more mighty Chan the strength of armies,
and in the defence of her purity she will awe by
her moral power the boldest libertine that, ever
defied the law; of God or man. Yet Mr Graham
scents to think that balsa and bars alone ran
keep her from the degreelati , s, of lost. IV, pity
him upon whom no better appreetatiou of the
nobility of woman has ever dawned."
