IN)ITORTART TO FAIIMEnI3..—Pork raising is
now ono of the.leading agricultural employments
among our country friends, to all of whom it
moot be important to ascertain what weight of
pork may be calculated upon In good feuding to
a bushel of corn. Here is a solution of the prob•
km. Mr. J. B. Cross, of East Highgate, Vt.,
paid $1,50 fora pig, one.fourth Suffolk to three
fourths native, of 7 pounds weight,
,April 10th,
1858; fed on milk and slop and 13} bushels of
corn meal, made into pudding, until Dec. Bth,
and then killed, and weighed 320 pounds of pork.
He rays:
"The question is not answered, from tho toot
that I fed some.milk, but I have come to con
clusion that I got about 22 pounds of pork for
every bushel of corn fed. This I think Is as
much pork as a bushel of corn will make, unless
there should be a difference in the breed of bogs.
Some think there is, but I have been inclined to
think the differenco is more inleeding."
PELORPECTA.—During the past two sieeks we
have been through nearly all Beeline of Law
rence County and find the prospects for good
crops very hir. The wheat looks better than
we remember to have seen it look in years past,
so early in the season. There is an evenness
and richness of color that indicates great health
and vigor in the young plants and the promises
at present are of an abundant harvest. The
grass is coining on finely, and everywhere the
farmers are busy plowing for oats and corn, and
the work of the farm, as a general thing is well
advanced. The prospects of fruit still bold good
notwithstanding many severe frosts, and snow
storms during the latter end of the last, and thus
far in the present month. Buds of all kinds are
well forward but uninjured as yet, and If no late
frosts come to "blast our hopes, in the buds," we
shall revel in peaches and cream during litter
summer months.—Nerreartle Courant.
DEEM
Tim Evanaville Journai, ways of tho wheat
crop:
"From every part of the country we bear the
most cheering accounts of the coming wheat
crop. It in supposed that the crop hoe eo far
advanced, and the rains throughout the country
have been no abundant, that Ife can have little
eason to fear that either a general drought or
Maeda can henceforth destroy the present gen
eral prospects of a harvest greatly exceeding
that of last year. This is gratifying beyond ex
pression. Many of the farmers of the Ohio and
Mississippi Valleys have been laboring under
embarrassments, growing out of tho unusually
poor crops of the past two years, who will now
have an opportunity, through the success ofthis
year's crop, to get themselves out of debt, and
to breathe much freer.

The fact is, Judge Douglas is declining to be

VNOONS eon AVRICA.—Mr. S. M. Griffin, an
ingenious mechanic and carriage -builder, of thin
city, has received an order, from a very distant
market., for the Construction of some carriages
of a novel description. The order comes, through
agents, from parties on the coast of Africa, and
iv for twelve or Meet, wagons, to be precisely
like a model shipped. and now in the shop of
Mr Griffin. This model vehicle is made from
a variety of wood, which persons having seen it
do not agree in classifying—its bnrk,•whieh in
one or two places remain on, resembling beech,
hut differing in other respects from that wood.
It seems to yield easily to decay, and, indeed,
the order is understood to have come hither, be
cause of the superiority of New Ilampshire wood,
as well as the skill of her mechanics.
The wheels of this vehicle are of a "dishing"
pattern, ds it is termed: that in, the felloes and
tires are placed about six inches outside of a
line passing perpendicularly through the hub.
The edges of the spokes are carved, and the
whole running part is painted a dingy red. The
axles are very heavy, aud the draft-shaft is much
like a plow-beam.
On this running part is fastened a frame work,
resembling somewhat that of the plantation wag
ons, which are built in this city to be used-in the
Southern Staten for drawing cotton, but the
whole is of a clumsy, Dutch-like style and fin
ish.
Such carriages are used for long caravan jour
neys towards the interior. of Africa, and thirty
bulloolis are often employed in the draught of
one of them. They are usually built for the
great trading companies on the coast, and are
frequently disposed of to the Moro wealthy of
the natives, who are said to pay extremely exor
bitant prices for them.—Concord (N. ) States
man, April 2.
PIIEJIMM eon A 'SrEtm now.—There being

Tonne MAIIK.n.—A ease '-. been before
the Courts in Roglrseal..- shows that
eves firms of reputation will consent to fraud
for the purpose of gain. - The Taylors, at Lei
cester, are manufacturers of a patent thread of
wide repute. They ollix to Their lahel the num
ber of yards on each spool, and this mark has
always been considered a guarantee of the
amount It appears, however, that it is not,
fur they have been furnishing Mr. Degetau with
spools !narked 300 yards, but containing only
from 230 to 230. It is showu after they had
been furnishing this house for some time their
conecience troubled theta, and they refused any
longer to do so. Their conscience, however,
was of such peculiar sensitiveness that they
were willing to supply Mr. Degetan with the
cotton on wood spots, though refusing to furn
ish
it on ivory spools, but subsequently refused
ohms...ether, and came into Court to restrain De
getau from selling the manufacture with their
trade mark on short measure. The Vice Chan
cellor thought that the Messrs. Taylor had dons
a grievous wrong, and whatever estimation they
might have of their own integrity, a very differ
ent estimate would be put upon their conduct
when, instead of being measured by the tricks
of trade, they aro tented by the plain doctrines
of honesty anti truth.
B. GRATZ Balm; ESQ.—Republicans through
out the Northwest, and in fact, all over the Un
ion, will hear with regret that B. Gratz Brown,
Esq., the able and accomplished editor of the
Mimouri Democrat, has withdrawn from his con
nection with that paper. Mr. Brown has made
the Democrat a highly honorable name in Amer
ican journalism, and has won for himself a repu
tation for ability, courage and patriotism which
few men of his ago enjoy. We trust that the
Democrat will not fall into lees capable hands,
and that Mr. Brown may have In whatever he
may engage, that rich success which is his doe."
Tun Dinka. Cass Caor.—The Baton Rouge
Advertiser hears complaints among the plantere,
of great damage to their seed cane by the wet
weather during the winter. The eyes have rot
ted badly in the stubble, as well as plant cane.
If the accounts are as bad as represented, it
thinks we may look out for a very short crop
this year, as It has heard planters put down half
a crop as the highest figurnthat can possibly be
reached.
