A Boss Cnracrt TO nc Ertacran so PITTSBURGH.
—The United Brethren in Christ, who hare a young
and flourishing minion, (their only reproseotation
in the place) propose building a house of worship on
the site now occupied by them on Hand street, oppo
site the St. Andrew's Clinch. The present house
being entirely too small to accommodate the congre
gation, they hare already secured a 4beral stab
ecription from their membership; batwing compara
tively few in number, they cannot meet the entire
rust of the work. They do, therefore, solicit aid from
a generous public who will be culled open by the
Bar. George IVagoner, pastor of the aforesaid con
gregation. al3:l3tr.
COURT or QUARTER BEEl.9lol43.—False Pretence.
—The case of Reuben Green, which was on trial
when the Court adjourned on Wednesday night,
came up yesterday morning. A rerilict of "not
guilty" was found. Tho charge, it• will be re
membered, was of obtaining money under false
pretences.
Misdemeanor in oMor. —Robert Thompson, As
sessor of the Seventh ward, was indicted for mis
demeanor in office, on oath of Addison Arthors.
The indictment contained two scums: the first
charged neglect and refusal of the assessor to
assess and return two lota in that ward, on Ar
thur, street; the second charged that defendant
did, on the 10th of March, 1850, knowingly and
intentionally rate and value two other lons of the
prosecutor, Fos: 39 and 90, In esid ward, at more
than ha (the defendant) knew to be their cash
value. The second counthwas abandoned.
Z Tomer, clerk in Commissioners' office,-4esti
lied that ho was present when Mr Arthurs re
quealed defendant to aesess the lots as he, Ar
thure, said was the proper way, or to assess
them properly. Mr. Thompson, the Assesser,
made no answer, and left tho office; the dupli
cote was returned at the time; it was before the
day of appeal for the 7th ward. Witness stated
ou cross.examination that errors in assessments
are usually corrected on the day et appeal.
Duplicates of 1858 and '59 were offered in evi
dence. In 18/08, the tote were assessed to Mr.
1 1 Arthur, 26 by 144 feel; in 1809, lots assessed to
Sir. Arthurs and Bartholomew Stark, viz: Ar
thur, part of 25 and 20, fronting each 18 foot 6
inches; Stark part of name, 17 by 194. Accord
ing to the loot assessment, eoe. third of the lots
is not aoseseed to any one.
Dr. A Arthur, testified that he gale a correct
plan of the luta to the aseeeeor; that he discov
ered the inlet/Ike made by Thompson, and aSked
him to correct it, which he angrily refusi•d to do
The defence contended that Thompson intend•
ed to scores too thirds to Art hors and one-third
to Stark; that he had so done. The Court read
from the law, and showed that the penalties in
the clause under which the action was brought
were directed ng‘inht assessors who may neglect
or refuse to aesee2 Did, then, Mr. Thompson
neglect or reface to assees" Not at all; it appears
on all hands that he did iiisPeN, one third to Stark
and two thirds to Arthur,. lie has therefore
done his day. The Comity does not inquire
who le assessed; but is the property assessed in
full. That Leitg done, the law is. fulfilled.
The jury rendered a verdict of .-not guilty
after a few minute,' coneultailen
Petit Larerny.—James Mackerel, indicted fur

Ludwig Serb were indicted far riot and 819130.111 t

jury. The parties are coal diggers, and the dis

conclusion, the Board -would urge oil the
members to take a more persorrabinterest In this
Association, and not leave all the labor to the
Board. If 30,000 people have visited the rend
log room, end 10,800 volumes of books have been

Tax Iscreas—The. Naomi lecture of Prof.
Mitchell, on the revelations of the telescope, it
would be utterly impossible for us to report in
full at the late hour in which wo write. The
subject was too vast for one lecture, even by
Prof. Mitchell. After the powers of man had
been exhausted in discovering the laws that
govern the universe, it became necessary, In
order that they might cultivate a closer ac.
quaintance with the stars either to be lifted to•
wards or to bring them down. The telescope
brought the stars down. It brought men ac
quaioted with our own solar system, and then
opened up spaces in the outposts of the universe
which the imagination almost fails to grasp.
The star til cygni, the only fixed star whose dis
tance has been measured, is 31,00 millidas of
miles distant. Light travelling twelve millions
of miles per minute would be too years in cross
ing the abyss. The lecturer had gazed through
the telescope upon a star whose light would be
ten thousand years in reaching this earth. The
lecturer described in detail the method of making
observations at the observatory. Ile traced the
history of the improvements in the telescope,
and the steps that bad been taken from time to
time in making discoveries of new clusters of
worlds.
The great telescope of Lord Ross pursued
these creations of God still deeper into space,
and . ,having reeolved' the nebulte of the Milky
Way into stars, discovered ether systems of stare
—beautiful diamond points glittering through
the darkness beyond. When he beheld this
amazing abyss—When he saw these systems scat
tered profusely throughout space—when he re
flected upon their immense distance, their enor.
mous magnitude, and the countless millions of
worlds that belonged to them, it seemed to him
as though the wild dream of the German poet
Richter, vas more than realized. God coiled man
in dreams into the vestibule of heaven, saying,
"come up hither and I will show tho glory of my
house."
And to his angels who stood about his throne
ho said, "take him, strip him of his robes of
flesh; cleanse hie affections; put a new breath in
to his nostrils; but touch not his human heart"
—the heart that fears and hopes and trembles.
A moment, and it was done, and the man stood
ready for hie unknown voyage. Under the
guidance of a mighty angel, with sounds of fly
ing pinions, they sped away from the battlements
of heaven. Sometimes ma the mighty angel's
wings they fled through Saharan of darkness,
wildernentes of death. At length, from a distance
not counted save in the arithmetic of heaven,
life beamed upon them—a sleepy flame as seen
through a hazy cloud. They sped on their ter
rible speed to meet the light; the light with lea
ner speed came to meet them. In a moment the
blazing of MOB came to meet them—a moment
the wheeling of planets; then came long eterni
ties Of twilight; then again on the right hand and
the left appeared more constellations. At
last the man sat down, crying, 'Angel, I can go
no further; let me lie down in the grave, and
hide myeelffrom the infinitude of the universe,
for end there ie none ' Tod there is none:" de
manded the angel: And from the glittering
stars that shone around there cameo choral
shunt, 'End there in none:' 'End there is none°'
demanded the angel again; 'and is it this that
awed thy soul' I answer, end there is none In
the universe of God! Lo, also, there is no be
ginning, '

WASULVGTON, April 14.—1 t is staled that the
prosecution was prepared, if Mrs. Sickles' de
claration was received, to give in evidence the
fact that in January last Mr. Sickles and a lady,
not hie wife, remained during a night in Carmi
ne's Hotel, Baltimore. The register of the hotel
was in Court for that purpose It appears, from
this register, that there is first the entry of Mr.
Sickles' name, in his own hand-writing, then
the names of several other persons, and about
ten names below, the name of Mrs. Daniel E.
Sickles, in a different hand-writing, neither hers
nor his. This preparation shows that if Judge
Crawford had admitted the confession, a v.tst
quantity of scandal on both sidei would have
been brought in on the trial, involving persons
whose names arc not yet mentioned in the affair.
George B. Wooldridge was the first witness
called for the defence, and was examined by
Brady. I reside at No. 3-1 Twelfth street, Wash
ington; came here in the latter part of Novem
ber to be here at the organization of the House
of Representatives; wee a clerk under the clerk
of the House; knew Key at that time; never
spoke to him but once or twice; on Saturday,
the 26 of February, I was in Fifteenth street
from very close to ten o'clock till three; saw
Sickles that afternoon between four and five
o'clock at the Capitol.
When I first went to him he appeared tllLinreat
from what he had been; the day before he ap
peared more likb himself; he was in the hall at
the rear of the Speaker's chair; we had conver-
Potion; I got him to go into a retiring room, and
there parted with him, after endeavoring to paci
fy him; he appeared very much affected and
tressol; there was no person with Mr. tickles
In that room when I left him; saw him no more
that day; saw him next morning about 10 o'clock
in the library of his own house; his eyes were
bloodshot and red; he approached me and toll
me he had sent for tuo to- come there— (later.
rupted by District Attorney.] Ilia face denoted
that he had been weeping; i remained in the
house till oil the strangers had left it, in tee a:-
ten:loon.
Ile acted like a man in great Borrow and die
tress, no much so that I watched for his coming
and going constantly.
l'iltnese said there was a strange manner
about hint. Every time he came into the room
where I was he pressed his hands to his temples
and would go over to the Secretary and nob.
lio appeared an it he was in great distress every
time these fits came upon him.
Ile would clasp his temples and sob and cry,
SO much eo that I told him to give 'tait to his
tears, they would relieve him; be would raise
his hands and exclaim; sometimes them fits
would take him before he eutil-1 get to the sec
retary, where he. went as if to htdc himself, and
then he would bow down hit head. Witnees
saw Key passing oppeeite Sickles' house looking
towards it, and waved leis handkerchief several
times; Sickles came into the library where
witness, saying that villain passed my house; he
was very much excited; I attempted to call him;
he threw off witness' grasp and turned into the
hall without& hot; that is the last I saw of him
till he cameeinto the house with the officers.
Witness was asked whether he had made any
oommunication of an exciting nature to Mr .
Sickles at the capitol
Mr °old objected, and in excited dintlSPloll
ensued between him and Mr. Stanton. who ac
mimed the public prosecutor with being actuated
by a thirst for blood, nod that he Looted down
the prisoner to rengcauce
Mr. Ould replied numly, tertning 000

Mr. Stanton responded, Bay - iog that the pan•

of Mr fluid's acquaintance, and after hI3 lan
