A NOVELTy to F/BLICuLTI=B.--The art of sup
plying the world with food ISM yet In its infan
cy; and we presume that the raising of fish by
artificial means will be found to be a principle
branch of the art. Every year eeea new disoov
eries in pisciculture; some of them being truly of
a very extraordinary nature. A Dr. ()Wyatt, of
the Paris nfiooiety of Acclimation," has recent
ly shown the very singular and important fact
that salmon may be raised In fresh water ponds,
having no connection with thehtels. The follow
ing translation from M. Cloquet's report, from
the New York Evening Pont, will bo read with
int.-eat
"The experiment was made, at St. Cucuta,
near St. Cloud, whero a M. Coate has success.
fully carried on pheicultural operations on a
very extensive soots. The pond chosen for the
experiment in question is of small extent, and
is supplied by a email etream of fresh water,
sufficient to form a cascade. Three years ago
the pond was eatiroly emptied and cleaned out.
In April and May, 1555, Revered ihOeMapg ma.
moo, only two months old, were placed i n th e
pond with trout, aud, notwithstanding the vora
cious nature of the latter fish, the salmon have
preepered so well that a few weeks ago, iu the
reeeliCe of the Emperor, who takes great in
terest iu the artificial production of fish, no loss
than 2do kilogrammes weight of salmon wee
caught by one haul of a net- This result is very
cur; rising, but M..Coste states that ho was far
:ours astonished to find that the female P&16101,1
were full of egg.. lie adds that he saw oeveral
egg' so highly developed that they were on the
point of being emitted. Thew results, which
hear the stamp of high authenticity, pr , ve that
salmon may be produced and reared in freeh
water ponds, under similar .circueastoocte to
there by which trout are now ao euccessfully
multiplied in various waters around Paris."
W e are not informed whether there are persons
who will sapply fish or eggs to those desirous of
steeling p0n.14; but would sqggese to them, if
such there be, that they adve;retse, make them
selves known, and make the business tru'y pro
fi,aide. 'l' here are millions of penile and lakes
in We country which would probably be as we❑
adapted h. taltuou raising as the one experiment

cometaoces and it is not unlikely that ealmon
weed modify their nature antnewhol, if confined
in lakes.

••As the gaming Arad xtravagnace of the
young men of quality was 12 W 7 arrived at a pitch
never heard of, it is well worth while to
give come account of it. They had a club at one
Alt:tack's in Pall Mail, where they played only
for rouleaus of £5O each rouleaa ; and generally
there was, .C 10,003 in specie on the table. Lard
Holland had paid above £20,000 for hie two
sone. Nor were the meuners of the gamesters,
or even their dressee for ploy, undeserving no
tice. They begin by pulling off their embroid
ered clothes, and put - on frieze greatcoats, or
turned their coats inside outward for luck. They
put on pieces of leather (each as worn by. foot.
men when they clean the kolves) to save their
lace ruffle's ; and to guard the eyes front the
I light ; and to prevent tumbling the hair, wore
high crowned straw hats with broad brims, and ;

wooden bowl with an edge of ormolu to bold their

at exorbitant premiums. Charles Fox called his

was in the right to deal with Shylocke, as he
could give arra pounds of flesh.' In three nights

Tun Albany Altai tolls a romantio story of a
Mr. Francis Boum., of that city, who left home
for a trip to Europe in 186]. Boma months after
his departure, news was received that be had
been drowned near Bordeaux when out man open
boat. There were fears, however, that ho had
been murdered. but no doubt was entertained,
it seems, of hie death. A few days since, Dr.
, Bless of Troy, reoeived a letter from New Or
, leans, waking inquiries about the Bouraabo fam
ily in Albany. The letter was duly answered.
Then came another which was from the lost Mr.
Bourn:sae—lost, or drowned or murdered—with
assurances of health and safety. Dr. Bless
started immediately for the residence of Mrs.
Bouraeso with the letter in his pocket. But on
his way thither, ha was thrown from his carriage
and so much injured as to be for somo time in
sensible. At length he recovered, but on search
ing for the letter it was not to bo found.. But
Mrs. Bourasso had the good sense to behove the'
story without vouchers, though it would not
have been surprising had oho supposed the good
Doctor's head wee injured by his fall. A comes.
pondenco was opened, and it turns out that Mr.
Murano has been imprisoned in France for
some political offence, and that When he escaped
ho heard that his wife was married again. tills
understandings, however, are now cleared up;
the dead alive, and the husband is hastening on
his way to throw himself into the arms of his
wife.
Gov. FOOTIL—What an easily doped set of
fellows the members of the late Opposition Con
vention at Nashville most have been ! A young
looking man, possessing roost beautiful end
flowing hair, a beard and moustache of the black
eat jet, and no sign of ever having need speota
elm!, passed himself off ou theta as Governor
Foot; late of Mississippi and several other
Stales and cities. Now, it is well known that Gov.
Foote to on the ehadyrilde of sixty, is as bald as
' an onion, as gray as a rat, and as venerable
looking as a Chimpanzee. But the youthful im
poster being called out for a speech, responded
in a style of gushing garrulity and Incontinent
egotism eo wonderfully liko the Governor, that
far lees credulous people than the Opposition
might have been excused for believing in him.--
Southern Paper.
The fact Is that Gov. Foote has recently don
ned a new wig, the faultless curls of which con
trast strangely with the well-remembered shin
ing bald pate of the fiery little Senator from

' Ton NEXT BOUSE.—"A Pennsylvania Repub.
lican" writes from Washington a letter designed
to upset a calculation by The_ nees that the
"Black Republicans" cannot possibly have a
majority in the next Rouse. To show this, The
State. places Messrs. Clark, Baskin and Rey
nolds of this State, Adrain and Riggs of New.
Jersey, Ilickrov-- id
:man and Schwartz of Pennsylvania
and John G. Davis of Indianan, in antagonism
to the Republicans, thereby cyphering down
their tally to 11l Members, with only a possi
bility of 2 more from Minnesota—whereupon It
thus sums up:
"On the whole, we have no fear of a Black
Republican majority in the next lioll3o of Rep
resentatives. The Democracy, however, may'
not be in the ascendant. That will be a calami- I
ty to the country, but an advantage to the party."
That "advantage" "the party" is very more
to enjoy. We propose to cater upon no discus
sion of the political proclivities of the gentle
men above named. They have spoken for them
selves, and in due season will vote likewise.
Meantime, no person connected with The State,.
unless in some very humble capacity, can be so
blind aa not to know that the Rouse will be or
ganised by Republican votes, and mainly with
Republican Officers. It would take a man long
blind and deaf to dispute at this day a fact so

AN Anon Wanition —Old Tarmahhah, (One-
Eye) the well•knowo Indian chief and warrior,
was in Wabaehaw, last week. He is supposed
to have been born about the year 1756, according
to the Wabashaw Herald, which would make him
104 years of age. Ha was a chief, saya that pa
per, of one of Red Wing's bands of Bioux, and
In the war of 1812 fought nobly with the Ameri
cans against the British. Ho was also on the
aide of the Americans in the Black Hawk war,
nod has rendered the whites valuable service at
other times. The Herald gives a copy of the
commission, and also demands a cosh pop for a
eight of it. The marks of old ago are visible in
his countenance. Ile is childish and imbecile,
and Is but a wreck of lb° once mighty warrior
who led his braves to battle nod to victory.
