PIIO.I.CT FOIL IIE)101 • 1011 TILE RAILROAD TRACI: FROM A PART OV LIBERTY STREET —On that part of Liberty street extending from the Canal to the Ninth Ward, the Pennsylvania Railway Company use a double track, which is almost constantly occupied by care. The consequences are that properly all along the line of the street is much depreciated in value, the street itself is rendered almost listless for all sorts of veld ties, no carriage, cart or wagon can slop in I front of a store or house fur any length of time, no restive horse ono he used in the street at till with any safety, extra help of runners and cour iers aro required by the company to keep the track open and free far lb., passage of the trains, and last, though by no means least, already bare several valuable lives been lost of persons walking or venturing ou the track. Ln view of all these difficulties anti dangers, both to the people residing along the line of the road anti to the Railroad Company, meetings of citizens were bold from time to ttrue in the ward, during the last winter, to see if some pro ject could not he started or some plan proposed by which Liberty street might once more revert, so to speak, to the use and behind of the city. This matter. moreover, has been more parties , tarty pressed home upon the attention of all our citizens by the project and prospoet of n Citizens' Passenger Railway, which ha, heen chartered to lay a single or double track along Penn street do completely has the Railway appropriated Liberty street, that in speaking of n thorough. fare for egress from the east rod of Pittsburgh, we newer mention Liberty! Penn street is, in fact, the only channel through which life and trade can safely flow in that direction, and it is upon that objection that the people of the Zqh and 9th wards have grounded their strongest arguments against the proposed Passenger Railway. In fact 'they say :—only give so come partially unobstructed street, some place where we may stop our coal, baker pr butcher cart without their being run over, and we shall be content There is force in their arguments. Ae we have said, a committee of citizens of the tipper part of the city was appointed last wint e r to see if some plan might not he adopted which should relieve Liberty street :They con. stilted with the President of the Pennsylvania Railway, J. Cigar Thompson, and he ex pressed his willingness and readiness F, enter into any feasible project. lie, in fact, applied to the committee and sought their rwsistance to ascertain at what price ail lie properly lying be tween Liberty street and quarry street, Louder the Lill Sullal of Liberty,) anil the canal and outer depot, could be obtained; he declared the Company was willing to purchase the whole pro perty as it stau•ts, provided they could buy at what the -Conipany considers a reationstile price. Through that properly, to good per. lion of which is sow quite covered with building., they priipoQe 14,, tr•ackt. and on either side erect truces =mill as will secure them from injury upon person or pro perty. The cob mdtier thus applied to wait.d on all the property holders on t.t t. territory before men tioned nod got a statement of the prices which they would take. In fifty or any ins:ances those prices were sati,f,:ory. There are, however. !our nenowning and nodsi there, who voll tud sell except at pricer which the Company deems unreasonable. Th., latt er proposed dent they would leave tie valuation of the property in question It, three ilimintert, ted persons, and ilia: the 641 , i Company would be bound by their decision, to which tbo four per soar objected In this state of the case, the re maining property holders have suggested to the company that it should make apidteation to the Legislatore for an net granting the power to re move the track from Liberty street upon this new location, and also to go an under the char ter and in accordance with its provisions, hare viewers appointed to assess the sable of the prop erty held by the four who aro unwilling to erll. If we are not misinformed, the project an above stated in full, corner from the people of the wards who are now suffering from the exclusive use which the P. It It. to obliged to make of Liberty street. That thoroughfare once more fit for use, and it is plain that a l'assenger Railway can be made that will he of no disadvantage to arty and a great convenience to all. A bill will probably be presented in the Legis lature on Monday belt. for the objects above hinted at, and the matter *lll speedily come be fore the Councils. Loomis, of this city, delivered an oration commemorative of the tak ing, one hundred years before, by the British, of old Fort Dnuuesne. When the banner of St. George unfolded to the breeze above the charred relics of Duquesne and at the same moment the white flag of France was hauled from its eta'. cover more to wave in token of French supre macy on that spot, the men of Gen. Forbes, with many a cheer, christened this city by the name of Pittsburgh, in honor of the man then great. est in the councils of Great Britain. As all the world knows, that•happened in 1778, and co in !Mi.", it become us to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Pittsburgh. We strove earnestly to obtain a copy of the oration of Mr. Loomis. Such crowds thronged the Duquesne depot to hear him that but few were enabled to catch a word that fell from his lips. We were not able to get to copy for publi. cation. It was thee proposed that a book ho published by subscription, which should be worthy the event celebrated ; a book that should contain all the circumstancea connected with the proceedings of the day. A subscription was started, but it fell through. The public have waited now these four months and hithertohave not been able to tell a word that Hon. Mr. Loomis said on that occasion.• At last, however, we are gratified. W. 8. Haven, who has just issued this oration from his press, has in the present instance sur. passed himself. We have never seen in this city a more splendid piece of typography. Tho pa- per is of the finest quality, and in the pamphlet of 3:1 pages, we hare been unable to find a single typographical or orThographical error. And the oration, which we have now first had the opportunity to understand and consider, is worthy to be thus published. The style is chaste, refined and elegant; a high moral tone pervades it, and in many parts it rises into those flights of dignified and impressive eloquence which are sustained only by high intellectual power. These flights err thus sustained, and seem to cento_naturally and to belong to the cub jest, 2R indeed they de. We trust that every family in the city and county have a copy of this elegant historical — eration, and read and pre serve if here el": Burt.
