versity in thin country,- and -from the character
of the parties interested in the enterprise, are
led to believe t t success will crown their efforts.
A meeting was held one evening last week at

parte of the - aqUntry, embracing some of the
meet refined and cultivated intellects of our own
State as well es representatives from Louisiana,
Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York and
Maine. Some wealthy individuals to whom the
subject has been mentioned; have pledged them
selves to contribute $OOO,OOO as the nucleus of
a fund for the endowment of the institution. A
committee_was appointed to wait upon other
men of wealth , ne coon as their nines have been
matured, and 'one gentlemen, prominent la in
tellectual circle's, is to proceed to Europe shortly
for the purpose of visitiog the most noted Uni
_vereities -of England, Germany
_and Prussia,
previous to arranging the details. of a system
upon which the proposed University is to bo
conducted. It is contemplated to carry out the
undertaking upon the meet comprehensive scale
and to present to the students of our country an
- opportunity for encoring a more thorough ac
quaintance with every department of science,
arts and literature, than can be obtained even
at Cambridge or Oxford."

new convict prison, which has just been comple
ted. It is au immense structure and took sev
en years to build. The prison has 1,000 separate
cells, oh spat, hospital, lunatic asylum, work shops
and residences for the governor and his deputy,

HOW TEIOE SHALL WE 80W OATS ?—An exper
iment was made on the State farm at Westbor
ough, Mbee . to determine the best quantity of
oats to sow per acre, resulted as follows: Two
bushels of seed per acre gave 56/1 bushels; three
bnehele, 40 bushels per acre; four bushels, 3fil;
and five bushels, 42 bushels per acre. Before
the general introduction of underdraining, and
Other improved methods of cultivation, five bush
els of oats acre was the usual quantity sown
in England. Now, three to four bushels are
considered sutficient; and-in the Western States,
one and a half bushels. Probably we sow too
