hat!os.—The brutal morder of Thomas B Lowe
bj a mob at Hawsville, Kj„ has boon made the
subject or oomment in various quarters and the
conduct of the assassins who were guilty of the
murder of Mr. Lowe WbHe-he was defenceless,
has been severely criticised. The citizens of
Hawsvllle bave felt themselves called upon to
publish an elaborate justification of the aot. A
long documeot signed by John SterrcU, W P
D. Bush, Robert L. Boyd, and many others, ap
pears it) tho Louisville Journal, going to show
the seotlmeot that actuated theso “citizens of
Hancock County” in the tsnrder of
Tbe defence briogß up a long list of charges
•gainst Lowe, paints bis life in very dismal
colors, recounts acts of violence which be is aU
leged to have committed, and winds up with the
statement that he was “an habitual violator of
law, and a constant disturber of the peace and
quietude of the community.” Tbe murder of
Lowe In the jail at Hfcwsvilte Is justified by these
“citizens of Hancock County, *’ on tho ground
that he had threatened tho lives of certain par
ties against whom-be entertained n grndge. The
deed is>eoorded by the Kentucky gentlenion jo
aorisp paragraph, which tellsof a cold-blooded
murder in a very cold-bloodod style:
"After these threats were made known to
them, two of those threatened proceeded, with
out concealment, and in the presence of hundreds
of people, to tbe jail and demanded the keys of
the jailor, and oompelled him to open the door
of tbe cell in which the deceased was confined,
on d thereupon ike reports of pistols tore heard in
thepriton, and the deceased teat found immediately
afterwards a lifeless corpse.' 1
We do not learn that the other citizens of Ken
tucky express disapprobation of tbq, murder, or
that the gentleman who “demanded the keys of
tbe Jailor” have been held to aocount.— N. 7

pASTDaisa of Stock— Bia Fields. Mr. Wm
11. Ladd, of Richmond, Jefferson, county Ohio
‘ one of the best farmers and stock growers in the
Slate, through (bo Ohio Firmer gives bis ex*
pcricoce sod flows on (bo subject ofpaslnring
for stock, as follows:
As the time approaches for turoiog_atiimal?
to grass, I wish to say a few words JnrclntioQ
to pasturing stock, and enclosures for (hat pur
pose. 1
> Some farmers haro au idea that sheep are
| particularly Injurious to other stock. I hare
heard porsous say, “Sheep poison the pastures
for horses and cattle.” wero it not for a pre
judice of this kind, many would keep" eheep who
do not. Animals usually prefer clean to filthy
food. Herbivorous animats reject grass recently
trodden upon by themselves, or others, unless
compelled to cat it, and none more particular
iu this respect than sheep. Put aue hundred
eheep in an enclosuro of five acres, nod they
will pass OTer a Urge part of the lot before their
curiosity is saiinfied. By this time they have
probably filled themselves, and will tie down to
ruminate from one to three hours. They will
then rise to eat agaio, aod finding a large por
tion of the herbage recently trodden upoo, they
will seek the parts missed before, in search of
untarnished food, and by the lima they hava
filled themselves a second time, they have prob
ably beon over nearly the entire lot. 1 The third
time they in liko manner reject what they had
passed over before, aod keep running in Bearch
of puro herbage, and so travel, perhaps, four
times as much to satisfy banger, as they would
under more favorable circumstances. The sheep
will suffer from tbeso causes, and horses aod
cattle confined with them will also refaso to fill
themselves, look gaunt, and lose flesh, although
trampiog abundance of grass under foot. lam
satisfied it is because some confine their animals
to too email enclosures, or put too mao> on in
proportion to the pasture, that this hurtful pre
judice has arisen.
My stock do best when all the different varie
ties run together. Last summer I bad fourteen
mares aod colts, six cattle, and one hundred
eheep, in a rouge of ninety-six acree, about
twenty-five of which is woodland : and it was
almost universally remarked by those who saw
them, bow very fat they were.
If I had leu adjacent fields, contoiniog one
hundred acres, and intended them all for sum
mer pasture, I would Iky down all the cress fen
oes, so that all (he animals should have free
access to the eniircrange. lo so largo a range,
none have lo cat to-day what they passed over
yesterday, but may leave what they have trod
den upon, until it is purified by the air, daws,
or rains. So they always have fresh, pore her
bage before them.
Again, different animals prefer different va
rieiieH of food. What is refused by. tho borso
may be relished by the cow; nud wjbst is re
b<vtfelioiott«(o fhre
•ueep.
Again where the fealnrca of a
country are like this-** uneven surface,
heavily umbered and wattfrdl'by innumerable
streams—there*!* almosi-atwava some part of
the farm, including the'woodland better suited
to grating than tillage: while nnotberpart may
be well adapted to cultivation,' and by fenoioc
the former, including woodland, steep slopes,
•Vo., all io one a very heavy item e f
expense for erosa fences may be saved.
Kiti'iiks Deaiss — Ooe of (ho greatest uui
saoceH at thcback-door of many country houses,
is the kiicben drain. Every farmer and gardner
knows that slops from tbo Biok and soap-suds
from tbe wash-tub, if saved, would mabo&n ex
cellent fertilizer, and that if thrown upon tbe
ground at tbo back-door, they become offensive
to tbe eye and nostrils, as well as o source of
disease. For every mao who has a garden or
farm, we still recommend that all tbe refnse
from kiicben and chamber bo saved and applied
where needed. It may bo collected in barrels,
or conducted by troughs lo tbe manure heap
and there mixed with mack or other absorbents
But lo those (pitiable people!) who have do
desire to save slops, and woo wish only to be
decently rid of them, we. rcoommend a plan,
which we havo seen tried, and know to be a
good one. It was as follows: A plank spool
was made, three feet long, .two feet wide at one
•od, and one foot at the otfaet; the smallest end
was sunk in tbo ground near tbe kitchen door
The upper end contained a moveable sieve, with
holes an inch in diameter, and six inches below
this was another with holes half an inch in di
ameter. Between tbe two sieves, little refuse
matter in tbe slops passed through to clog op
the drain below. These sieves are easily re
moved and cleaned. A lid over the lop of the
spout to keep down offensive odors, completed
it. The lower end of this spout terminated la
a plank-drain six inches in diameter and twelve
feet long, laid below frost. This drain conduct
ed to a cess pool six feet deep and five feet
broad, which was filled op with oobblo stones
laid loosely, and with a considerable open space
in the center. From one side of this cees-pool.
a drain of tabular tile two and a half inches di
ametcr, ran off into an adjoining posture. To
oid la keeping his cess-pool sweet, and in car
rying off the liquid clean throngh tbe tile drain,
tbo water from tbecow troughs of an adjoining
shed or stable was eonduoled into the cess-pooL
At every considerable shower, this washed all
out thoroughly. This arrangement has worked
well for several years.— Amtr. Agriculturist
A Litoaet Cmiosirr.—A St. Pctcraburgh
journal has an article by which the publio is in
formed of a great literary treasure now in the
possession of the Imperial Library at Bt. Peters-
Durgh. It contains nothing less than the rec
ords of tho Bastile. When, during the French
revolution, the rich literary stores of the de
stroyed Bastile, together with those of number
less abbeys ami castles, wero dispersed to tho
winds, & Russian of the name of Dubrowsky,
who was attached to the Russian embassy at the
Court of Versailles, as translator, sacrificed tho
whole of his fortune in order to save these trea
sures os muoh as possible. Dubrowsky later
fell jiuto povery, but, for all • that, and although
a brilliant offer was made him, it is said, from
Koglond, he did not part with his collection, but
presented it to the Emperor Alexander, who re
warded him with a considerable donation and
pension for Ufo. Thocolledivn was kept in tho
Imperial Library, and only a few small and
particularly elegant volamcs were transmitted
to the Emperor's private library in tbo Ilormiu
ago. The following are the contents of this
valuable collection: Royal letters do cachet;
ordinances of the ministers to the officers of the
Bastile; notices and reports of the police spies
in references tothoprisoners; confiscated poems
and proso works; poems and writings in prose,
written in the Bostilo; and lastly, the records
of that formidable and hated prison. —London

Lobd Macaulay has recently written for tho
Encyclopedia Britannica, a biography of Pitt,
Earl of Chatam. The most striking passage,
whon we consider the fact that Macaulay himself
hae reoently accepted a peeragc,:is the follow
ing:
Whatever might be his motives io accepting a
peerage, it is certain that it prated very preja
dical to his character, and that in consoqnenco
be sank as much io popularity as" he rose in
nominal dignity. The “great commoner,” ashe
was sometimes colled, had formed a rank for him
self, on the bam of his talents, and exertions, which ,
titular honors might abscure } _but could not illustrate;
and, trt/A the example of PuUeney before him, .he
should nave been careful to preserve tt untarnished
by empty distinctions, shared by the mean and the
worthless as veil as by the great, the oifted and the
good.
Toi eant and humbug of spiritualism are ob
taining some very thorough expositions. John
Fort, of Greenfield, N. H., publishes a long arti
cle,. In which he declares that for three years,
during which he passed as a very successful
medium, he was engaged in a continual series of
deception and trickeries. He says he never
knew amedium who really and honestly believed
in the control and guidance of spirits.' Mr.
Fort and Dr. Hatch can take plscee together
