Tbeboyflio (be street know him, and point him oat as be passes, the pdmiriog crowd lift their hate lo him, the unsuccessful envy and perhaps traduce bim. Success seems natural to him. If he was not bom with a gold spoou in bis moath, be has long sinoe exchanged bis wooden 000 for it. Every ihiog be touches seems to torn to bis advantage. That farm be bought a few years since, woald now sell for doable the money. If there is but one good orop raised in the town, you will find it in hit fields ; and then wbat prices bis produce always brings bim. Depend upon it, there’s something in it, “ho’a a lucky man/' this Is the oulaldo view and a most perniciousirie. Let a man “curse bis stars,” complain of his bard fate, and sigh and wait for luck; let him feel the conviction that success is something definite, uncertain, which may or may not follow effort, as a kind of mysterioas, uncontrollable chaoco may direct, and it is not difficult to predict his future. Ills stars will all be unlucky ; the golden oometwUh its splendid train of glorious results, for which he looks, will never be seen above his horizon. The man of “lock” isa mao of “pluck." We like that word. It is solid and yet elastic. It bas a ring like steel. It tells of a man who docs not know when he is conquered. If the back ward Spring disappoints his calculations for a large corn crop, ho is euro lo have a fine field of bnokwbeat; or if this fail, be rejoices in a fallow ready for anotabluyield of Winter grain. If debt presucs heavily upon bim, il but bends him more olosely to bis work. But more than all is (be “plucky" man distinguished by ven tnriog boldly when there is a probability that success may be attained. Scarcely a man of fifty years, but remembers the lime that success was within bis reach, bad be possessed nerve enough to break from his old routine, and fol low the opening; while many a one has been deterred from competence and even fortuno, by timidly adhering to “good old ways,” good— only in age. The cultivator especially, who hopee to succeed now, must hare net only the energy which rises against opposition, and bears up under misfortune, bnl also the enterprise which looks for and adopts improvements; and there never- was a linjo when such enterprise had surer promise of success, for never before were improvements, both in the manner and the im plements of cultivation, more marked and abundant. The plucky ioao of to-day will be the lucky man ten years hence American Ag riculturist . WhfcCK or a DrirJu Mam-of-Was.—Mr. Samuel Dunbar, a passenger from Havana, on the steamship Karnak, which arrived at this port at 1 o'clock this morning, has given our reporter the details of a terrible shipwreck off the coast of Jamaica. It appears that the in telligence of the disaster ud!l not l»eeu made pub- H4gbofoj W .th e closing ofjtwtWila for New York, butlfial tfca>P*w« port ,on the south of the island, before tbo sail* mg of the Karnak, and Mr. Difiibar accidentally came into possoeaion of the nmin facts, and what we stale rest* solely upon his aulhurity. The Lritish war eteam>r. Jaascur, which was lying at Jamaica on tbe Ist Jnel , received or der* to set out immediately on a cruising voy age, and directly sailed from that port. ()□ tbe night of the -lib lnsUni she struck & hiJdcu rock to the northward of Jamaica. The pumps were immediately manned, and kept working until daylight, when il was discovered that the water WO3 rapidly gaioing, aod that'it would be im possible to keep her up but a short time. Tho a raft to be constructed, and to this raft were attaobed tho two boats be longing to tbe Ttteael, and the m«u, sixty in number, all w«ut aboard, with such scanty pro visions as they were ablo to secure from the sinking wreck. A heavy gale sot in soon after tbe men look lo tbe raft, and they bad not been out above two hours wheu ten men were swept overboard and drowued. All efforts to rescue them were hopo less, the men bad all they could do to prevent being washed away after them. The captain eeeiug it waa uaelow to cling long er to the raft, took nineteen men with him in the smaller boat, the mate and the remaining twea ty-nine into the larger one. It was coneiidered □sc)css to attempt to keep together, aod tho cap tain said they would each make tbe best of their way to land, without reference to each other In a short time Ibe boats were separated by the wind, aod the larger boat, containing thirty men, has not been heard of since, and is believed to have been lost with all on board. Tbe lit lie provisions tbe men on tbo small boat bad taken with them were soon consumed, and the wretched party was subjected tp the double sufferings of cold and famine. At last, when all were completely exhausted and perishing, tbe boat was driven to a port on tbo southern coast of Cuba, and the entireparty survived. The government Immediately sent oat two vessels to cruise in search of the miaslog boat; bat their search bad proved fruitless.—.V, r! Past. Moan Election Frauds.— A series of dis graceful frauds apon the eufferage, committed in Maine at the lost September election, have just been officially exposed. They resemble in character and rival in iniquity those which were perpetrated in Kansas. In Hcneock plantation 165 illegal votes wero given, and the residence of 125 persons, whoso oametr are as having voted, could not bo foam). Large same of toouoy were expended in all these plantations, aod paid directly to the voters at bo much per head. Liquor was flrcely supplied, and at the polls in Hancock plantation great numbers of the voters were drunk, and some of them stripped themselves to the skin aud capered about io sight of the women and children All the Repub lican voters were driven from the polls and their lives threatened. In Hancock, Mr. Dickey, a Ctutom IJovft officer, examined the votes and ar ranged them to his liking. In Madwask a, a Cutiom Haute officer stood all day over tbe ballot box, counted and declare*) the votes. In Van Bureo the voters were expelled from tbe room while the votes were counted and a Mr. Ham mond, an alien, aided an counting and declar ing the voles. All the Democratic votes were printed oo blue paper, to insaro a performance of oontract on the part of paid voters. The legal requirements regarding tbe monoet of con ducting the elections were flagrantly disobeyed, and the Golleeforo/Paatamayuoddy vras himself in the Gold, taking oharge of the proceedings. We letirh from a gentleman who formerly re sided in Paimero, In Sicily, that the polioe of that eity atq paid from vftek to week only one half of their wages. Tbe other half Is kept as a reserved fund, out of which all parties Buffering loss by theft, burglary and similar crimes, which ilia the duty of tbo police to prevent, are In demuiflod. There Is a settlement at the end of every »ix : months, and tbo surplus is divided among the policeman, who suf fer a loss of wages by every failure to porform their duty. The system works admirably. Crimes of the sort are almost unkoowe, aod at each settlement there is hot liule to dedoot from the fund before Ris distributed.—AT. Y. Trib. Fbfavobablb from rna Gold Mines. —As wo have frequently given assurronces that the Ga zette would give the latest, most reliable, and, in fact, all the news from the Gold Mines, or else where, it is proper that wo should give some re cent reports which have reached us. We are ioformed that Mr. Talbot Fairleigb, brother of Win. G. Fairleigb, of the firm of Too tle & Fairleigb, of this city, bas just arrived from Cherry Creek, whither he emigrated last fall, in October, or November, as noticed by us at the time, ana where he spent tho winter. We have not seen Mr. F. bat sro reliably informed that he says tbo mines won't pay, don't pay and have not paid. He is surprised at the rash in that direction, and predicts the greatest amount of suffering among those who are going out so illy prepared, and especially among those going with band carta. Mr. Jos. R. Campbell, of Holt county, has also writen back to tho Forest City Monitor , that the mines are not paying so far ns bis observa tion goes, bat thinks there may be discoveries made in the mountains which will prove rich. Mr. Wm.,Zook, of the eame county, has also re turned making a Bimiliar report. These arc all young gentleman of intelligence and respecta bility. We have recently given some very encourag ing news from the mines, and havo always given the authority for these reports. Wo now give this adverse news that those who road our paper may be in possession of all tho information which has been elicited. The reports are thus contiicling, os to the rich ness of tbe mines, but all concur that there is gold there; the color, is found everywhere. A few months wilt determine the matter.— St. Jos. (Mo.) Gorrtte, 23 d.- Killed on the Railroad.— At noon to-day, as tbe passenger train for tho west was passing the Company’s reservoir, a short distance aboyo towo, the fireman on the engine “Blazing Star'” Mr. James M’Cormiok, looked oot, probably to eeo if the track was clear, and the water pipe struck him on the left temple, knocking him off the engine sod killing him instantly. The train was Immediately stopped, his body placed upon the cars and brought to town to the residence of Mr. Cook, the engineer of the train. A coroner’s Inquest was held and a verdict rendered in ac cordance with the above facts. Tbe deceased is said to have been a clever and industrious young man, and much esteemed in the circle in which he moved. —Zfar. Tel.
