Bates & Johnson, yesterday. These gentlemen have beco engaged in this business in our city for about two years, and during this time have covered quite a num! her of roofs. Their material is manufactured by themselves, carefully, upon the most approv ed scientific priodiplo. They have succeeded in manufacturing an indealruclibie gum, which is impervious to water, and is not at all affected by heal or frost—maintaining it* elasticity under the heat of tbo noon-day summer son as under the hardest frosts of winter. They use first, felt paper, throughly saturated with osphaltum’ and other indestructible agents, upon which they lay a covering of heavy muslin, or canvas thoroughly coated with their celebrated gum, and this gum is coated with a rough cast of fine hard sand. We saw a specimen of sheet iron which had received a coaling 'of this 'gum— at an expense of 1J cents per fool—which was perfectly hard and dry, and which perfectly coated tho iron; and yet this coating effected in the least by bending the iron, how ever short. For all purposes of roofing, steep or flat, largq or small, we think that this lioof iug possesses many advantages which will appear self evident to those who may feel enough interest to call at tho ofßco of Messrs. Baiea & Johnson No. 75 Smithficid street. ’ Tun PtTTßßtmun Cathedral.— Bishop O'Con nor, of Pittsburgh, is on a visit to this City for the purpose of raising funds to rebuild tho Ro man Catholic Cathedral recently destroyed by flro in Pittsburgh.
